This is a portrait of my grandmother’s Aunt Betty.
acrylic, ink and markers on 9″×11″ sketchbook paper painting from a photo of my grandmother’s Aunt Betty as a ghost and her wonderful car. The reason I call it Art Deco Bete Noir is (obviously the car and dress are from the Art Deco period and style) the car was her Black Beast in that she died while out partying and driving around with the top down and the pedal to the floorboard. It was a Phaeton or an Auburn Phaeton or something like that. I dont have the photo anymore and I hope auto fans will forgive my skills at reproducing from memory this car. Her dress was easy to remember but boy that car was a monster to try and recreate.
Auburn Phaeton
I cant believe this is the kind of car my reat aunt totalled but it looks the same.

ooh fabulous….loving these deco works of yours (I think the car is fab)…..maybe this is Miss Scarlet, in the garden, with the car LOL

  • The reason I call it Art Deco Bete Noir is because she died in the car after a night out partying and zooming around with the top down. One of grannies favourite stories to the little ones to get them to slow down. Anyway, its obvious the dress and car are Art Deco but I thought I should clarify why the Bete Noir/Black Beast in the title. The car was her Black Beast even though it wasnt black.
