Designed by North Devon builder, Richard Allen, the city of Exeter’s custom house is one of the oldest such buildings in England, dating from 1680. It is also believed to be the oldest brick building in the city.

Here on the quayside, imported goods would be assessed and duties paid before the goods were transported into the city.

Home to around 120,000 inhabitants, the city of Exeter is approx 70 miles south-west of Bristol and 37 miles north-east of Plymouth.

Date: 8th December 2012.
