Osborne House

Number of views as of 30th September 2014 = 320.

The family home of Queen Victoria, her husband Prince Albert and their 9 children, Osborne was purchased by the royal couple in 1845.

Master builder Thomas Cubitt was approached to demolish the old house and build the magnificent Italianate mansion that is today maintained by English Heritage.

The house (near East Cowes on the Isle of Wight) has extensive grounds and a private beach overlooking the Solent where the Queen regularly bathed and her children learned to swim.

The sumptuously furnished royal apartments must be seen to be believed and it was here in 1878 that Alexander Graham Bell demonstrated his new invention (the telephone) to the Queen.
