Glasgow Tramcar No 22

Number of views as of 5th July 2014 = 1030.

Location: National Tramway Museum, Crich, Derbyshire, England.

The Tramway Museum is built on the site of an old quarry, and as well as featuring an impressive collection of trams, the site also includes several reconstructed buildings, including the one shown here, which was the former Derby Assembly Rooms.

This shot was taken on a freezing cold, misty, murky day in February when it was almost too cold to operate the trams due to the risk of the points freezing! This explains the lack of passengers/visitors who were all trying to keep warm in the shops and cafeteria.

Date: 19th February 2008.

For tramway enthusiasts, the Tramway Museum web site also contains some great images and a fascinating collection of old postcards & photographs.

Very nice shot with the (I would assume train station) in the background! So even the trollies over there are double decker eh?

  • The building in the background is the former Assembly Rooms
building, originally from Derby, but now reconstructed at the
    Museum site.
Sadly, there are very few tramways left in the UK now, most of
them had gone by the middle of the 20th century. The Museum
has fine examples of both single and double decker cars, as
    does Blackpool in Lancashire.
Interestingly, some UK cities are now bringing back modern
tramways as part of their transport infrastructure, in order
to reduce traffic congestion and pollution.

Hmm, to bad the US can’t embrace mass transit like you folks over there.

Great shot RedHill ~ have you considered putting it in the Trams & Buses Group?

  • Didn’t know of this group, Judi, but thanks for the hint!
