This is the Victorian shopping arcade in Seamore Road, Westbourne, Bournemouth, created by Henry Joy in 1884. A visionary in my opinion! Here you can find proper shops! Not a high street name to be seen. There are even 22 gargoyles who leer and grin at the shoppers below! Not that many of the shoppers notice, it has to be said.
Westbourne is one of the most elegant parts of Bournemouth. Despite the disappearance of many of it’s fine Victorian villas, there is still an atmosphere of gracious living.
In the 19th century Westbourne consisted of wild heath land with pine-wooded chines, frequented by smugglers, and used for hiding contraband.
