Raveningham Hall

Number of views as of 2nd December 2014 = 520.

Great Western Railway locomotive number 6960 ‘Raveningham Hall’ awaits its next task at Minehead station, end of the line on the West Somerset Railway (WSR).

This locomotive (one of the Great Western’s ‘Hall Class’ of engines) is named after a country estate and stately home in Norfolk.

The 4-6-0 coal-fired Hall class engines were designed by Charles Collett and were used for mixed traffic operations between 1928 and 1965.

Of the 259 built, Raveningham Hall is one of just seven preserved locos of its type. It was built in 1944 at the GWR’s Swindon works and remained in service until 1964, when it was sold for scrap.

The engine was however saved for preservation in 1972 by Steamtown Carnforth. Restored in 1975, she worked the Severn Valley Railway until 1996. Further restoration work followed from 2009 to 2011 and she’s now the pride of the WSR line.

The WSR is one of the west of England’s most picturesque railways, offering views of the Quantock Hills, Exmoor and the Bristol Channel. Trains run between Bishops Lydeard (near Taunton) and Minehead on most days of the year.

Date: 28th May 2013.
