Stourhead
Stourhead
Stourhead is a 2.650 acre estate at the source of the River Stour, near Mere in Wiltshire, England.
The estate belonged to the Stourton family for 700 years before being sold to Henry Hoare I, the son of a wealthy banker in 1717.
The beautiful gardens at Stourhead (amongst the finest in England) were created by Henry Hoare II in the period 1741 to 1780. The gardens are home to a large collection of trees and shrubs from around the world, including many fine rhododendrons.
The view here is taken from close to the main entrance, overlooking the elegant Palladian bridge, the lake, and across to the Parthenon temple.
The Stourhead estate has been in the hands of the National Trust since 1946.
