The Spiny Haired Rat lived on Kangaroo Island, SA, and has not been seen since 1850. Measuring 10.5”, it had long grey hair. Habitat destruction and introduced species ensured its extinction. Kangaroo Island also had a unique dwarf emu, as did Tasmania. There are no pictures of them as they were wiped out within 30 years of settlement. On the mainland a bounty was paid for emu beaks and eggs. In 1932 a shameful order was issued to soldiers, who were sent to slaughter the flightless birds with machine guns.
