The following collection of photography features images that use light, either consciously or unintentionally, in a unique or striking way. Anyone who spends a decent amount of time browsing the art on Redbubble can probably appreciate that narrowing down this collection was a little difficult! There’s no shortage of great examples that fit this theme so we’d like this to serve as an intro. Please do let us know about your favorites in the comments below.

Light Painting Meets Stencil Art: Fabrice Wittner's Enlightened Souls

If you’re in search of some inspiration to kick start your week, look no further than Fabrice Wittner’s Enlightened Souls project. Fabrice combines light painting techniques, stencil art and long exposure photography to create these unique and somewhat haunting images. Enlightened Souls began as a series of images created in honour of those affected by the New Zealand earthquake in February 2011. Fabrice’s latest series depicts children from Vietnam’s rural areas placed in city locations.

Will The Lytro Camera Change Photography?

The interweb has been abuzz with news of the release of the Lytro light field camera – a camera that allows you to ‘shoot now and refocus later’. It’s been hailed as the camera most likely to change the way we take and enjoy photographs. How do you think the Lytro will impact upon photography?

Northern Lights Heading Further South?

News agencies are reporting that the aurora borealis (Northern Lights) may be visible a little further south over the next few days due to a massive solar flare released by the sun earlier in the week. Bubblers in the higher parts of the northern hemisphere may want to keep their eyes on the skies and cameras at the ready.

The aurora borealis is caused when gas particles expelled in solar flares interact with elements in the earth’s atmosphere. Different colors are determined by which atom is struck, and the altitude of the meeting. This article explains how the colors are created in greater detail.

The Washington Post is reporting good chances of sightings in New England and the Great Lakes and further north. Their article also features bubbler Paul Alsop

The Weekly Wrap

Some bubblers may remember that we used to publish a weekly wrap from the Community account, celebrating the big news and small wins we’d spotted around the bubble each week. We had to pop the wrap on ice for a while but we’ve missed hearing your highlights so we’ve polished it off and have decided to give it a little more limelight as part of the RedBubble blog. We thought it might be a little quieter around here post festive season but you’ve been quite busy it would seem! So without further ado, here are just some of the excellent things we’ve spotted this week …

Inspiration: Light Painting & Fresh Challenge

Some of you may recall we used to put out regular inspiration posts on the old Community blog, well as we gear ourselves up for getting your creative neurons firing again we thought we’d dig out, scrub down and update an early post that was a bit hidden and set a fresh new challenge to go with it.

Light painting (otherwise known as light graffiti or light writing) is a photographic technique that involves slow shutter speeds, darkness and a little bit of practice and experimentation. And it’s not just some newfangled thing all the cool kids are doing. Check out this image of Picasso (by Gjon Mili) giving it a go back in 1949.

If you’ve got the urge to scratch that creative itch or to try something new this week, you should really give it a go. All you need is a camera…

RedBubble Curates... Avoid the Rocks

They lead us home. Actually they don’t. They tell us where rocks will rip apart our boat. But they are a good metaphor for a light in the darkness. But sort of a one telling us where not to go. So not really a good metaphor. A better one would be a GPS. But not many people do GPS art – lighthouses are much cooler. But let’s not get too much into why as it is making us uncomfortable. Ahh, just enjoy – lighthouse art.
