RedBubble Thursday Release Notes

Hello bubbleers, bubblettes, bubblisms, etc! We’ve had a great week in the Thought Bubble, with heaps of great thinking done about the near future and lots of nice stuff for you guys to play with on the site!

New Activity Email
We showed this off last week, and as of tomorrow, the activity emails we send will look much prettier.

New Daily Wrap
We’ve got a new Daily Wrap format which is going to be updated every day to point you towards all sorts of great stuff all over the site (how-tos, interviews, competitions, journals, etc). We’re also featuring three groups on the page, and some people.

The first limited edition T-Shirt (and the RedBubble store)
I’ll defer to onetonshadow’s Stiched #9 for all the details, but the Limited Edition Transmitter – Receiver T-Shirt is now on sale (for just two weeks). We also really needed a place to put all these special products, so we’ve built a little RedBubble Store as well, which we hope will make it easier to do these little experiments and special products.

New T-Shirt Colors and a New Size
Also mentioned in Stiched #9, we’ve added 5 new T-shirt colors and a new size.

Journal Entries are now Featured
We’ve been struggling with the position of Journals within RedBubble. Lots of fierce debate, shaking of fists, etc. We think we’re going gradually move towards the idea that they’re a more personal way of communicating with your fans (those watching you) rather than the entire RedBubble community. Some Journal entries will still have broad appeal to the community, so we’re going to start featuring them both in the journals tab and in the Daily Wrap, instead of relying on popularity.

Search
It’s still a work in progress, but we’ve made some tweaks to the search engine, and we’ll be rolling out more pieces of the puzzle over the coming weeks. You should only notice subtle differences right now, but under the hood it should be a bit faster, a bit less fussy, and a tiny bit more awesome. There’s more to come, of course.

Etc
Plus all the usual bug fixes, tweaks and improvements that we’ll let you stumble upon yourselves.

Justin, on behalf of all these wonderful people that work incredibly hard

Cool Bananas! Some great tweeks here. I think the Featured Journal Entries is a great idea, and the new community page looks good too! RB is so big these days, so it’s great to have an area that will highlight cool stuff.

    Onya guys!

I really like that the limited edition tees are organic cotton, the whole fashion industry should be aiming for sustainability so it’s great to see RB as a leader in this regard.

Like the thoughts on the journal thing. It would be neat to be able to send an entry to whom you choose (groups – watchlist – or the world). Will be interesting to how this plays out. All of you are awesome and the care you extend to us is so appreciated.

I would like to know what this actually means:

We think we’re going gradually move towards the idea that they’re a more personal way of communicating with your fans (those watching you) rather than the entire RedBubble community.’

It sounds like you plan to limit the viewing of journals to those on my watchlist. If this is so then please think again. I am using my journal as a blog and want everyone to be able to view it.

If you should limit journal viewing in any way then I will have to return to blogger.

Of course you must do as you see fit. It is after all your company. But I just wanted to point out one possible consequence of this change. If I understand the implication correctly that is.

Great to hear that you are working so hard for all us members BUT there is one problem that I’d like to see RB address: that’s the fixed print ratio of your cards….surely it must be possible to come up with a program that adjusts the printed card to the image size of the art work rather than the present system which cuts off the image to fit the card size? Any help on the way?

  • Faizan Qureshi

Faizan QureshiAll Rounder, about 1 month ago

Baiko, the card crop is explained very well here. I was reading a forum post recently and someone mentioned that the cards already cost a fortune to manufacture, I don’t think they’d give anymore love to it in the near future.

(I, obviously, speak as a member not a staffer so don’t take my word for it!)

Love the work you are doing for RedBubble and the community. As a fairly new member. I love this site and the support you receive from fellow bubblers. Keep up the good work. :)

  • Christopher Ewing

Christopher E..., about 1 month ago

i think the journals should stay as is, sometimes a journal isnt just for the people on your watchlist, and how else can other “new” people find you? i think it should stay as is, besides…doing just a “certain” featured, could end up in favortism seeming like only a certian few members always are noticed with their journals and the rest, well they are obsolete, which would only cause a windstorm around the place, as it stands now, its fair to all, the old members and the new ones. we already have issues of the same people always featured on home pages and community pages, we dont need that to trickle into the journal pages too.
with “50,000” members, there should be different names daily on any featured pages, not the same artists with different works up. not saying those there dont deserve it, they do, but it does seem its always the same people, instead of rotating “50,000”member’s work
    so i say…leave it alone..if it’s not broke..dont fix it!

aww guys..bring back the “elvis has left the building”! just noticed that when i checked on a plain avatar for a person..can still throw in the advo’s for shirts and all.but that elvis has left the building..was classic!

It looks great, I have a concern about T-Shirts we create. We should be able to feature them in any size and we should also be able to design the back and the sleeves. Maybe even a hooded shirt. Also istock will be offering business cards this summer, It would be cool if we could create a redbubble business card to display to display to potential clients or to spread the word.

One last thing, it would be nice if we could create a key word for “Black and White” Photos we have. I’ve tried B&W and it wouldn’t list it.

If anyone has any info on the stuff I listed, feel free to email me.

Great Job RB! I’ve been singing your praises to everyone.

I have great respect for Redbubble and enjoy being a small part in its Community and evolvement. I for one hope it manages to maintain its level of maturity and respect, that is sorely lacking a some others that I have familiarity with… some get so big, that it becomes literally, a “free for all” in its worst possible scenario. Congrats, and keep up the excellent commitment and standards thus far.

RB Gods, the new journals system stinks. You’ve ripped a large part of the soul out of Redbubble in one foul swoop.

Cannot believe you’ve done this. Stunned, completely stunned.

Sounds like the majority of your responders like the new Daily Wrap. I don’t much care for it. I liked the old one. I used to click on Community and I was there. In fact, I really wish all the changes would go away. I live by the old saying, “if something works, don’t fix it.”

  • Nancy Polanski

To clarify my comment, I liked clicking on Community and getting the Activity section. I now have use two clicks to get there. Boy, am I spoiled, huh?

    Hi,
Everything that you are doing new to this site to improve it is wonderful.
I must be a Royal DUMB Cluck, because I’ve tried with 3 different photos to put them on your T-shirt (whatever is called) template without success.
It seems to me that you are doing all of these improvements to start charging a fee to continue with your membership. Am I correct or not??
    Take care, Bonnie

Somehow I seem to think that someone on RB mentioned RB business cards? Did I read that right?
