RedBubble

The road map for the next few months

So, we said January is thinking month, yet here we are mid-February and we’re still thinking quite a lot! It’s been incredibly valuable to us to take a step back, look at what we’re really trying to achieve here, and how we make all the pieces fit.

The first thing I guess you need to know about RedBubble is that we have no shortage of ideas, and no shortage of suggestions from the community. It’s actually quite rare that we hear of a bad idea — most ideas are great, or as Xavier would say, winners. So when we’re faced with hundreds or thousands of great ideas, the challenge is deciding what’s going to solve the biggest problems for the most people, and making sure we stay true to The Big Plan.

A huge part of The Big Plan is the buying and selling. Artists are happy when they sell their work, buyers are happy when they find something they want to buy.

With this is in mind, we’re going going to be spending a lot of our time over the next few months looking at our products, as well as how they’re bought and how they’re sold. What does that mean? Hopefully that means…

Revised wall art products

We don’t think we’ve got the wall art stuff right yet, and this is going to change. Pete’s already previewed our plans for framed wall art with interchangeable matted prints, but this is just the tip of the iceberg — we have some top secret stuff wall art products we really hope we can get ready.

Wall art needs to be big and we still haven’t been able to find a way to economically ship big wall art around the globe, so this is high on our list (still).

Post cards

Our greeting cards still need some attention, but we’re also really keen to do post cards and some other printed promotional stuff that helps the artist sell their work and promote themselves.

Photo books

Calendars were a roaring success (and they weren’t even publicly available for sale), so we’re pretty keen to get a photo book product out there for everyone to buy.

More T-shirt options

We’re keen to have more colors and styles available to the buyers, as well as more options for the artist (like front and back printing, shifting the print area around on the tee, etc).

Better selling tools

As Pete recently discussed in the year ahead, we feel we’re in a partnership with the artists, and we need their help to promote their work and sell it. So we want to give you tools to do that. Business cards and post cards will help, but so will some technical stuff like allowing you to have a more product-oriented profile page and some more widgets to embed in other websites.

Personally, I’d really like to help other artists sell their stuff by promoting it, so that’s something we’re going to explore as well.

Better buying tools

Not everyone is a buyer, but for those who come to RedBubble (or to your profile) with cash in their hand looking to buy something, we want to make it really easy.

Mooks and publications

In addition to In The Moment (on sale in a few days) and our current competition Gaia, Fran is working hard to introduce more periodical publications in the form of Mooks (not a magazine, not quite a book, get it?) to get more of your fantastic writing and art published.

Disclaimers and footnotes

This is the big stuff that we really think will make a difference to RedBubble over the next few months, but it’s not a definitive list at all. There’s no guarantee we can get all of this done of course, and there’s obviously other things that we’ll need to take care of along the way, but everyone needs a plan and something to focus on.

Hopefully you’re as excited about this stuff as we are!

Wow! Lots of good thinking and organizing going on! I do have a suggestion…....after ordering my laminated prints, which were beautifully done by the way…....I then had to spend a couple hundred dollars for frames…....because the sizes are NOT standard sizes. So, how about some size standardization?

I like the business card and postcard idea – perhaps if we’re to be buying our own materials for promotion off Red Bubble – discount orders over a certain print run (I know MPix and others offer increasing discounts for larger runs (100+, 500+, 1000+ etc.) for the smaller items like the cards. I know if I walked into a Hallmark-type store that sells cards locally and had 10 boxes of 25 cards to sell, they’d be interested, but with the rates where they are, that can get awful pricey for artists that are just starting out or who have this as a side income revenue.

Not sure about the concerns over mooks – mook is a term that has been in use for at least a few years. Great example for anyone wanting to be inspired by people doing good things in the world is Dumbo feather, pass it on – DF has happily existed as a mook long before this thread…

Apart from all that, love the ideas and also hope that kids’ sizes might be on the menu sometime down the road – I keep force feeding my nephew but he’s still not big enough to fit my t-shirts…

I’m new here, but love how red bubble is run & Co-ordinated.
I have to agree with Jason Andersons comment about having an option where bulk orders can be sold. Selling one card, or print, is great for the browsing customer but no good if we wanted to sell greater volumes & people love discounts. Love the idea of postcards, esp with artists name, red bubble.com smartly printed , we could offer sample packs to wanna be purchasers or shops, nice idea.
All sounds very good! Bring it on!

Mooks might be okay copyright wise as on the ipaustralia site I did a search for trademarks relating to Mooks…. all of them were composite trademarks and none of them related to class 16 which would be the relevant class in this case as it relates to books and class 42 which is the layout of the book … all the listed copyrights related to classes dealing with clothing and sunglasses. But I am no copyright lawyer

Are people concerned because of copyright? We should all consider what kind of license to publish our works under. It’d be good if RB supported the various Creative Commons licenses too.

the community of redbubble reflects the enthusiasm of its staff methinks..

ive told you guys before, but ill say it now in publicke:

you need to make really simple shoes that people can do designs on
and you need to have sticker transfers to be able to place designs on any existing fabric (from an old tshirt or a bag lets say)..

I am excited to hear that everyone is so involved in the bubble process. So, with that in mind let me through one more crazy idea onto the ever growing pile. What if we take the art of one bubbler and match it with the words from another bubbler and let the clients or buyers decide how they want to buy the merch. People love choices just as much as they love discounts, and adding to the ideas of package buying when it comes to postcards and greeting cards they could also have the option of buying a package of one type of card or mix and match in any order that they choose. Of course prices are going to be higher for single copies, but when you discount the packages it will give the buyers more incentive to go that route. Just a thought, Thanks for letting us have a say in running the show.

  • Tony Elliott

I haven’t sold anything yet, but I have faith that this is the tool by which to do it. It is my work that needs to be more focus.

RB – your site is already absolutely incredible (although a warning of possible addiction may be wise). The very fact that you still want to improve makes we certain I will be on here for many many years.

Oh, also, as a buyer – I think the process is smooth and user friendly. The one suggestion I would make is with the cards, and this is to maybe put them into those see through slips that shop cards come in. I have sold my own work from Bubble, but only by buying it and selling it afterwards and I think this might become even easier if they were packaged.

    Just a thought.

    Thank you for everything.

  • Bronwen Hyde

    Bronwen Hyde

i’m extremely keen on the photo books, and on the mooks & publications side of things. as adgray mentioned, the option for individual mooks or magazines as well as photo books would also be fantastic.

having published a book through blurb i found the quality good but i have issues with the following things:

    - inability to upload cmyk images into their software and subsequently not having as much control over colour and contrast shift in the finished product

    - the prohibitive trackable shipping prices from the US to Australia

    - the fact that you can’t “set your own price” if you’re not a US citizen over 18 years of age

    - not being able to give printing business to a “clean green” australian printing house.

glad to hear that there are so many options being looked at to give us more exposure, outlets and opportunities :o)

I think the mook is a good idea…. I was thinking though about an idea I had and don’t know quite how it would sound to all? So let me just throw it out there and see what ya think. I have an advertising certificate and lot’s of marketing experience. Many projects I’ve developed. Something unique and excellent exposure and sales potential. Okay here it is how about a registry in store’s or a store Red Bubble Registry one that would be easy to browse through and buy art from. Just like the baby registries and the wedding stations that you pick from in stores. All the details would need to be worked out for there would be alot of them. Yet I thought there’s nothing out there like that where you can purchase art and have it shipped like the one here. So many fantastic artists to choose from and it could be all over the world. I myself know it would be huge I like to shop myself for the special artist the piece that goes with my moods and rooms moods in my house and have many nice pieces from other artists. I know it sounds to complicated yet …hmmm just wondering does it sound off the wall or off the hook let me know what you think if you want. Thanks

Wow bubble your awesome, this site is great. To add my two cents worth.
    1. Would love to see the option of setting margins on each product individually for those that like more control over this.
    2. Kids sizes in clothing, I’d love to put my kids in some of these T’s but can’t.
    3. Volume discounts on cards (and in future post cards).
But as I say I think it’s all Fab and appreciate the huge effort you guys put into to make this site so great. All the above ideas sound brilliant.

you have it all wrong – wall art needs to be SMALL and have an option to do so. i don’t know of anyone that has huge wall space. the posters have to be huge – they should be smaller – it would be cheaper for them to buy and frame themselves. once behind glass, the paper can be any type.

further this site is set up like a church club. i don’t want to see comments on my work, if my stuff was sold or not, journal entries, etc. this site isn’t set up to sell to the public – only people from within seem to buy stuff. there aren’t enough options to print on things that people actually use and reuse – mouse pads, mugs, tote bags, stuff like that. cafe press has a huge selection and should be followed. but they have a terrible interface which you have to do heavy coding yourself to get it set up.

as a buyer of stuff – this is still my review of the site - not enough choices for prints. the prints are still random sizes, i want small posters, and maybe even a proof sheet that can be bought and shared over the people that were chosen.

i still want to know how many outside people buy from here. cafe press comes up fast in the search. and while bubble is getting there – i know for one i havn’t made any sales. yet those with work that really isn’t up to par in my opinion – sales… from who – who knows…. the art section is randomly chosen – half of it is old – its not a great advertising tool.

plus there should be bulk prices, and the option to print for something that can hang outdoors.

i also think there are too many steps involved to buy something. every option for each type of things being sold should be on the screen. under each item – canvas, poster, etc, there should be sizing and price info, turn on the things you want to buy, and bubble in the sizes you want. it adds it up on the side. the current system is still actually confusing. restricted to a large screen (not everyone has a large screen). the sizing box is actually off the screen on small screens. that ain’t good. it should be super easy to buy something. i’ve been here a while and it still confuses me. it still confuses me why i can’t buy a poster (8×12) for example on each product. even if its less quality. most printers aren’t printed at 300dpi, they can be printed at less. i have no room for huge posters…

i also want the option to not get mail from all the group leaders – ever notice that the Minimilist group not only mails the most, but has the most text??? weird? if i get mail i want it to be about me, and not the new avatar they have… can that be a feature to turn off? or to turn off journal entries as a watch list item – except for the bubble stuff (which should have the big red dot as an avatar), it gets lost with all the other silly avatars.

More choices in print sizes would be good and mat color choices too. I notice that where I can print a 13×19 photo from one of my pictures you say the format is too small even for a card. I guess my question is why is that? If I can print it why can`t you? Comes out great on my Pixma pro 9000 printer. As for shipping maybe using plexy instead of glass. I know plexy can scratch easily but it is much lighter. I don`t know how you ship out your product, if it comes from one location or if you have more then one place it comes from. If you have choice ship the product from the closest office you have. If you don`t have that option yet find places to open. Just some thoughts from a new person. Good luck in all your work. And thank you for what you do offer at this moment.

another note, this site needs its own unique niche – how about emroidery on demand? sell hats, tshirts, etc, with your own option to include a pattern chosen from my folder, with their words then print that? - little Billies birthday, a train, on a white background on a train striped hat – that would be a cute party favor.

while i’m at it, i’d like to have the ability to sort my own pictures into catagories. not just a private search (which would be good too), but to place each thing under stills, hdr, animals, etc. hard to go through that many pictures.

the same goes for the groups – nearly impossible to view through. can’t really find the new ones. and the search strictly relies on the keywords they chose for that group. i’ve typed in the name of the group in the search box – and it didn’t come up at all.

Good ideas. My two cents worth is echoing a couple of others’. I feel the price of the greetings cards is too expensive (except for a one of special purchase). I know the price point reflects the quality, however I think you could print on a different stock & still have superior quality. I found that when displaying my Christmas cards (that arrived from a few RB friends) they buckled & fell over because of the weight. Selling cards in larger quantities would certainly be very viable with a good quality, less expensive model. A thought to ponder. Cheers

  • JenniferB

    JenniferB

I’m new here, please could you explain why ‘buying’ and ‘selling’ Art is the focus of RedBubble? Is it to financially support the hosting/running costs of RedBubble as well as support cash-strapped Artists, (the first answer being, of course, a possible necessity, and the latter being a matter of choice), or is it because the commercialism of Art is a core philosophy of RedBubble’s Staff and the Artists who reside here? I by no means intend my queries to be offensive in any way, I’m just trying to guage whether or not RedBubble is an environment I will ‘fit into’ in the long term. For instance, if I don’t support the commercialism of Art and choose not to participate in the buying/selling of ArtWork, will I be perceived as being a less favourable member? This being said, I’d be more than prepared to make a donation to RedBubble for the hosting costs should it ever be asked for, as I’m continually inspired by many of the Artist’s creations here and appreciate the service.

  • RedBubble replied

Hi JenniferB – different people like RedBubble for different reasons. Some like the positive feedback and encouragement they receive, others like the chance to collaborate and meet like minded folks, others like the opportunity to sell their work. Philosophically we are strong supporters of things that help us all get our art ‘out there’ ... sometimes this involves turning it into a physical object.

When it comes to supporting the site, the only way we make money is through the sale of physical products – so this is important but I don’t think it’s at the heart of what we’re striving to achieve. At the heart of RedBubble is the idea that ‘everyone’s an artist’ and we want to play a small role in brining art back into all of our lives …

I agree with Sharon about the cards. It would be nice to be able to offer a more affordable card. I have bought HUNDREDS of cards & they do buckle & fall over. I can see the public buying them from me once, but not coming back for more when they find out their purchase falls over & buckles.

I also find the ladies tees to be very thin (the mens tees are thicker) & of a poor quality make, and they are way too long! I also had a tee of mine done & it is the most revolting thing I have ever seen – the colours are all wrong. Due to the above, I won’t be buying any more tees :(

I also found that some of the images on my calendar were too dark (my monitor has been calibrated). I ordered it Jan after this issue had come to light, & I did not expect the calendar to be printed & shipped until the issue had been resolved.

I don’t know anything about the printing process, but one of my images I have orderd as a mounted print, a pic in the calendar & as a card, and the colours are all somewhat different on each item, which to me seems to be a bit of a issue where consistency is concerned.

Other than these issues all is well, and keep up the good work :)

I am very pleased with RB, especially with the community spirit.
One suggestions: you provide html to run RB slide shows on other web sites, why not on RB itself? If somebody is looking at a bunch of photos, it is much easier to see them as a slide show. This should be working in any context – whenever I have several thumbnails on the screen, I should be able to see them by individual clicks or as a slide show.

    Keep up the good work!

    Revised wall art products
    1. Is the matted print a product that you’d be interested in? Yes.
    2. Is the interchangeable frame something you’d be interested in? Yes
    3. Do you want the want glass/perspex in the interchangeable frame (or nothing in front of the print)? Depends on the photo.
    4. Would you be happy to sell your art as a matted print? Yes, with glass in front.
    5. Do you want other sizes for matted prints? Yes – from small to large photos.
    6. What other questions do we need to answer? Why are you asking such a small amount of money to the buyer? I dislike your front frame samples. Plus with the photo being 10”X15” the matting is too wide at 17”X23”. A buyer doesn’t wish to purchase a blah frame with over-sized matting. Increase the price and offer buyers a choice of frames and matting.
    1. A. Are you offering canvas prints in various sizes? They are very popular now. Many people like the look of an oil painting without glass in front of the terrific looking frame.

    Post cards
Our greeting cards still need some attention, but we’re also really keen to do post cards and some other printed promotional stuff that helps the artist sell their work and promote themselves. Selling multiple good quality post cards should be very easy if displayed properly keeping the quantity to a minimum of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25.

I suggest you include greeting cards. Do not low-ball the price, but give buyers a choice of phrases for the inside (like a Birthday card) or leave the inside blank to allow the buyer to write what pleases them.
    Photo books
Calendars were a roaring success (and they weren’t even publicly available for sale), so we’re pretty keen to get a photo book product out there for everyone to buy. This is a wonderful idea, but what prices will the seller receive and the buyer pay?
I agree. However, Redbubble seems like a bubble gummer site (a high school or grammar school site, not professional), were your artists say, “Wow” or make an incomplete sentence. The members should tell what is good and bad, and how to improve the skills per piece of art/photo – If this took place, the seller will sell more. This will afford Rebubble to earn more money too.
    Better buying tools
Not everyone is a buyer, but for those who come to RedBubble (or to your profile) with cash in their hand looking to buy something, we want to make it really easy. Before you consider better buying tools, you truly need to look at critiquing tools, so put marks in different colors where they need to improve.
    Mooks and publications
In addition to In The Moment (on sale in a few days) and our current competition Gaia, Fran is working hard to introduce more periodical publications in the form of Mooks (not a magazine, not quite a book, get it?) to get more of your fantastic writing and art published. 1. Wikipedia is like an encyclopedia and no help to only artist. 2. I am a photographer and a journal photographer. 3. The photographer in me will post photos to websites. 4. The journal photographer will go to a magazine publishers by passing the middle man.
Redbubble is okay now, but it could be great for seller, buyer and Rebubble with some major changes. Please reread the above.

Would be interested to see how many artists are selling at local markets. I’m one those photographers who sell at the markets with a range of products but have started promoting redbubble as a destination for my clients to go to purchase a great variety of good.
One thing I would like is promotional products I can use to help promote redbubble at my stall. E.g vinyl banners with redbubble and my details to hang at the front of my stall.
Would be interested to see if other artists could benefit from such products.

  • Michael Boniwell

I’m disappointed to see no mention in the road map of creating an option for sellers wanting to make use of the RB sales engine only in conjunction with their own website, or some kind of isolated RB hosted gallery that does not include links to the rest of RB community and is very configurable in terms of it’s look and feel.

For example, a web user should be able to arrive at my website, look at my photos (hosted on my site, not RB), decide to purchase and simply click a link (or operate within a small frame) that then sends them on a round trip to RB and back, just for the processing of the sale, without the end user ever being aware they left my website.

Alternatively, as mentioned, make the public view of “My Bubble” totally configurable so I can remove all headers and footers, delete all links to the rest of RB, change colours, possibly even change the domain name, etc. Basically strip away everything except the RB hosted gallery of my photos and the ability to purchase.

I like the community feel of RB personally, but it just does not seem appropriate for presenting my work in an exclusive, dare I say professional manner. The one thing I do love about RB is that it’s local. Dollars are in AUD with shipping from Oz. That’s the big, big advantage it has for me over it’s competitors. But at present I can’t make use of it as I would like to.

RB if you are listening, there could be an annual fee (to the seller) perhaps associated with this isolated sales only concept. That would perhaps offset its development.

Postcards would be great, I would by loads.

Selling callendars wasn’t specifically mentioned here and that is what I was looking for in the road map.

Also, I’m not looking forward to going through all the artwork to enable the new selling options … how about a button to add all the new options to all the existing artwork, then going through dissabling the ones I don’t want to have it would be easier.

How about when postcards are introduced, automatically enabling all cards to be postcards as well?

So does this roadmap mean that RB is content with their tshirt print quality? Because I know a lot of people who aren’t.

Is the fact that they’re printed overseas the hurdle or is it just going to remain in the ‘too hard basket’.
