RedBubble

The year ahead ...

We spent most of January catching our breath and thinking about the year ahead. We’re not entirely done with out thinking – because the devil’s always in the details. But there are a few outcomes I’d like to share.

We think we need to communicate ‘more betterer’. We’re often so busy ‘doing’ that we forget to tell you what’s going on and why we’re doing particular things. So we’ll try to be better and more regular communicators.

The way we view RedBubble is that we’re in a partnership with the artists on the site. This influences every element of our thinking. And the partnership works like this – we take care of the boring back of house work to free people up to concentrate on their art / writing – and marketing themselves. We solve hard boring problems that individually are very difficult to solve (e.g. manufacturing and shipping goods around the world).

But we can’t do everything. We’re a team of 16 – and we’re flat out. Over the next eighteen months we want to grow this to a team of 30 – but even then we won’t be able to do all the things we want. We want to involve you in RedBubble.

For example, we’d love to be more involved in selling your work – but the reality is that out of the 16 people in the company now only one has a sales focused role. So we need your help to sell your work. And I think you’ll be far better sales people than we could ever be – but what we can do is to provide the tools / advice to make the selling process easier. This is one of the things we’ll be working on this year. Better tools and advice. Better products. Sales features.

I am completely inspired by wikipedia. I’m inspired by the fact that it’s trusting and it works. And this is what I want RedBubble to be – a trusting site. Over the course of the year we want to hand over control of the site to the members of the site. Just like wikipeadia. So if you’re keen to get involved there’ll be lots of opportunities!

And this trust needs to extend very deeply – this year we’re going to be very open with our thinking and internal numbers. Our view is that open communication is essential to a healthy partnership. For example, for those of you who wonder about the financial side of things – the current profit margin on the RB base price is 10%. Over the course of this year we’ll be looking to improve our logistics to increase this to 23%. With this money we need to pay all our expenses – staff salary, equipment et cetera.

Here’s a quick snapshot of the RB team and our jobs (to give you a sense of what we’re all doing day-to-day) :

Xavier – Website builder
Justin – Website builder and thinker
Hop – Answers e-mails and chases up orders
Bridget – Does the books
Ben – Website builder
Tom – Looks after logistics
Ed – Looks after t-shirts
Dave Cheney – Keeps the computers running
Fran – Looks after writing
John – Website builder
Jo – People stuff on the site
Dave Librach – Groups and other people related stuff on the site
Martin – Thinker
Peter – Bus driver and everything else
Grant – Website builder and seller of stuff
Paul – Makes things look beautiful

Thoughts, comments, feedback all welcome. Most importantly, are we heading on the right track?

Peter

wonderful stuff. great to hear your ears are open. I’d love to be more involved. not sure how though. I’ve done radio blurbs for you and spruiked it up to lots of students and other artists leading to more people joining up. And today is my first birthday here… and its been a wonderful and satifying experience… thanks for having me. I’ve had fun.

you guys are doing so well and being open and asking others in is great. good luck with the next years growth. I’m sure it will come. staying open and ethical is the big trick. ..:)

I must commend all of you for the fantastic job you’ve already done so far. I have been on many photography/art sites and I can say that when I came to RB last October I was a little leary dues to “drama” from the other sites. RB has been the most friendly, welcoming place ever. Although there are competions here to win I don’t feel the tension. There are groups to join, but only if you want to. Even if you don’t comment on somebody elses work, they still comment on yours. I could go on about how much I like this place. it has a true community feel here.
When somebody creates a Redbubblers Annonymous group…..... I will join promptly.

Thanks RB ….you all do a wonderful job!! When it comes to marketing i have advertised your site on Facebook…myspace, my email signiture and through my local art centre which includes our newsletter. I have also recommended it to fellow artist and possible clients..so i think this self marketing is all that you need…we should be able to do the rest.
I love the fact that i can sell my stuff all round the world just by uploading my images..i also love the connections made on here.

I think if you need to increase your commissions then that is your right..you do alot of the hard work and i’m sure no one will mind.

I’m not sure how the wikipedia thing will work out…i’m not sure how that works…

All in all i think you guys are on the right track….

I have to agree that communication is one point that must be improved. I think that’s my only grumbling point regarding RedBubble’s governance – and that’s pretty good!!

  • Steven Lippis

I think the communication is a very good idea.
Being secretive doesn’t mean you’re doing anything dodgy, but it does make people think it!
The difference between RB and other places I’ve been a member of is that it feels open, it feels approachable and to me it seems you have the best interests of members at heart.

good communication is important for any partnership, so hello to you all, nice to now know who is who and does what… I think involving RB members in a more proactive basis is a great idea and should have positive results for all. As with any business it is not only the quality of the product it is the quality of all the people involved, all working towards common goals and for myself RB is a place to sell my art and network with other artist’s, look forward to the year ahead and the opportunity of generating more sales…cheers

Peter you are definitely improving the site by entering that direction as you described: “Over the course of the year we want to hand over control of the site to the members of the site. Yes I would like to be able to record my sent bmails – there are so many wodnerful people out there to communicate with and I tend to forget what I have said to whom…don’t want to bore people repeating myself. The site is fantastic..even my husband who is a non-bubbler says what a safe and friendly place it is. RB has changed my thinking, drastically increased my confidence level and improved my self-esteem changed my life, in fact. It is a wonderful place for people like me who are geographically isolated.

Very exciting to be on RedBubble, and it’s been terrific for me for display, sales, and most of all the friendships developed. I think you guys are terrific, full of innovation and do a great professional job. And if you’ve grown unexpectedly, that’s the good news. You’ll keep figuring out how to make it work. Your business is taking off, you’ve got a hit.
Congratulations to every one of the Team of 16!!
About increasing sales, that it’s something you wrote you’d like to work on. If a stranger goes to the home pages, there’s no way to find out about all the people here, and they’re likely to stick to the featured artists unless they’ve got a name to look up. I don’t know how that can be expanded so the unknowns and unfeatured get known, but it would be great. Maybe some additional cross referencing, I’m not sure what would work but I don’t think strangers (that is, non-members) visit my pages and I’d love that.

I am still confused about how to manage some if the things on the page .. what worked for me was the generosity of fellow members … if there is one thing you folks can work on is a compilation of solutions to problems … I don’t think you need to change much … well done

I appreciate everything that the RB team does behind and in front of the ‘scenes’. I applaud your enthusiasm and efforts at making this the goto art site of the world wide web, and I firmly believe we will get there. It is so refreshing to hear from administrators of a site like this that they value member input, member desires, and the level of transparency you envision in this community between the artists and administrators is and will be unparalleled! I like you are very excited to be a member here, to be looking into 2008 and well beyond, and I want to offer my skills and energy to help the Redbubble dream in any capacity that the call is made for in the future! I want to be a part of the team if and when such an oppotunity makes itself known, because I too feel your passion and see the forest for the trees! Bravo Team RedBubble! Onward and upward!

You guys/gals are doing a fabulous job and I look forward to the year ahead on RB! It’s given me a commercial edge which is hard to find on any other (photography) sites. Going forward, there is so much talent and inspiration to be found in RB and I would really love the opportunity to pick everyone’s brains perhaps in a workshop environment, and particularly as it relates to (advanced) photoshop. I’ve already learnt so much by attending on of the Shooter’s Gallery events, and would like to see this extended to the ‘digital darkroom’. Food for thought … ;-)

I don’t think I’ve even been on here a month yet and I’m loving it. Completely hooked – although… I’m about to start working from home so I’m worried about the potential distractions! (Ok, no RB before 3pm…)

The good thing about RB? Compared to the other sites I’ve had a ‘go’ at – there’s no stupid member heirarchy. I got so sick of the people on other forums/sites who had been members longer than you and had themselves up on pedestals. It got REALLY old.

There’s been so many developments in my short time here so I’m very keen to see what the next 18 months brings. The only request I’d have is to be able to categorise our artwork – so that the viewer can view all of it, or only certain themes. I want to design some cards, for example, but I’d like to be able to keep them separated from my ‘art’ art. (If you can already do this though, and I just haven’t figured it out – just ignore that!)

Oh yeah, and the news of postcards and a possible coffee table book is VERY cool. Can’t wait.

No complaints from me!!! It’s all good.

    Hi Peter.
RB seems to be getting a great thumbs up from everyone! Though I’m too new here, I agree with them.

What might be useful for any of us who have been using other sites as well is to share their experiences with u guys on the potential problems that other sites have faced. This will help u guys to then be better prepared for them. For example, being a user of iStock, I know that they were faced with a lot of server outages a few months ago, due to the sheer amount of pictures that had been uploaded on their server and the traffic the servers had to handle. They then had to significantly upgrade their software and hardware (both at a cost).

While we at RB may still be some time away from such a situation, such experiences that others can share on this forum would perhaps help you better manage future growth.

Keep up the gd wk and all the best!

  • Matt Merritt

You guys are doing a good job! But there are a few areas I think could use improvement. One is the screen that shows up immediately after uploading a new work. Often, I will upload one work right after the first, but the “Browse” button that shows up is not there to upload a new work, but to “Change this image”. The “upload another image” text is, I think, too inconspicuous, and I think it should be a (red?) button, not a link.
And a much less important change would be to place a comma after “Welcome” on the “my bubble” page… As it is now, it says “Welcome Matt”. :)
I may make a journal entry about some other ideas I have.
    Keep up the good work!

OK here’s an idea for you all think about. You need to increase sales so why not open a point of sale gallery. Three exhibiting rooms plus book and card shop and cafe. Two week exhibiton cycle, ten days of work on walls, four day turn around. Each room an exhibition from a featured group. Opening nights would generate dozens and dozens of exhibtors and friends. The three exhibition groups work it out within the parameters of the group how each mini exhibition is dealt with. Themed or best of or a solo show by someone of real excellence.
International and interstate exhibitors no worries. RB does all the manufacturing and framing and hanging and such like. Being able to exhibit in a nice gallery overseas has got to be an attractive idea. Limited edition sales, books, cards and what not. Tee shirts for the night. Get the vibe going.
I’ll sit out the back and write pithy and gratuitous old mrs cranky pants reviews and critiques. Danny can write the press releases. Helen McLean can design the posters. There’s lots of talent here. Stringers got to be somewhere front of house greeting the tourist bus’s that will surely descend in flocks to have a look.
    Think about it….

  • RedBubble replied

Great idea – the current plan is that Ed and Tom will move to the UK in the middle of the year and open a RB gallery / nerve centre in London … and our next office in Melbourne will also be in a gallery / nerve centre. If both of these ideas go well then we’d love to roll this idea out more generally … but they’d be much more than just galleries. We’d want them to be a hive of activity. It’s great when online interactions result in off line stuff … maybe it’s just me but I still like meeting people face to face.

Well I for one love being here. I am off work at the present with a health issue and RB makes my day. There is a lot of love and good will here with the occasional winge but sometimes that can help get things off your chest.
I love the talent of all these beautiful artists photographers and painters and if I had to change one thing it would be this: NOTHING All is cool in the RB camp.

What can i say that hasn’t been said….. You, the RB team do an awesome job, and you are prompt, polite and thorough….. the quality is outstanding, as is the functionality and energy of the RB site. I love telling people about RB…I am PROUD to tell them about it….so will continue to spread the word in every way possible.
Just wanted to add my voice of thanks here and now….keep up the great work and I look forward to future growth, development and trust.
If I can help….would love to even be more involved…..

I greatly appreciate the effort and amount of work you and your RedBubble team put into maintaining and providing a space for people to exapand their creative talents. I have not been a member of redbubble for a long time, but on the few times that I have been and just by reading all the comments above prove to me that you are all doing a wonderful job, and I am sure it will continue in the future.

  • Juilee Pryor

yes good one RB Central…. having a facility that allows for actual interaction to happen will create many many new opportuities. And that in turn will drive it all forward. Letting people meet and put their work on walls will be the icing on a very rich cake in the end.

Linking up with other galleries is also a go strategy. There is an almost defacto RB gallery in Sydney…Gallery 26 run by the talented mr bodymechanic and I’m sure there are places in Melbourne that have that RB stamp to them already.

Handle it right and keep the good natured ozziness to it all and you’ll be a brand name in no time.

Have the idea of slipping some leaflets in with cards to advertise RB and all the wonderful work here.

It is so encouraging to find a site such as this. A site such as this that continues to grow and meet challenges. That is proactive and not reactive.
I am all for taking a greater role in marketing our work.
A couple of thoughts along those lines.
    A daily featured artist
Asking experts to give classes within RB there is such a pool of experience here in teaching as in producing work. Both are important.
A published anthology. With a theme chosen by us.
What say? Hope everything goes well.

A couple of suggestions arising out of some obstacles I’m experiencing in the areas I want to develop as a photographer:
    1. Model Bubble – yes I know there are many online modelling agencies out there but they are pretty much for professionals and, quite reasonably, charge accordingly. However, I also suspect there are aspiring male and female models, just as many of us on RB are aspiring serious photographers and artists. It would be interesting to see if there was interest if RB opened a facility for models/actors who wanted to promote themselves and start their journey by working with emerging photographers who are also on their journey – both could benefit from working on photoshoots together at minimal cost to both, with the model/actor getting at least some high quality images to promote themselves with and possibly even some serious paid work (depending on how well established the photographer is). Just a thought – there may be no interest but I guess til you test it out you never know.
    2. Related to the above makeup, lighting, hairstyling specialists, even trainee art directors – a similar “bubble” category as for the models for all these other creative specialties.
    3. “Bubble Trade” – this category would be for anyone in the trade who wanted to advertise – it wouldn’t be intrusive advertising – just a place on Bubble you could go to if, for example, you wanted to find someone who did theatrical costume or prop hire for photoshoots or sold camera accessories and may be prepared to offer ‘bubbler discounts” to build up a business. This could also become a bit of a separate income stream for RB itself enabling it to subsidise other activities if it so chose.

Sorry for the ramble but I’m very interested in getting a creative team together and working on some ideas together and I’m finding all of the above is taking me a huge amount of time and effort to pull together from different sources and it strikes me that RB could be an ideal place for all this marketplace of creative ancillaries to come together to the benefit of all concerned.

  • Geoff Coleman

    Geoff Coleman

Oops – forgot to say what a brilliant job RB is doing and how much I respect the way you are wanting to approach your relationship with the RB community. Community is definitely what RB does best in my opinion. Up until I joined RB I was one of a gazillion Flickr photographers getting lovely comments from people (and hey that is worth its weight in gold) but otherwise going nowhere. Since joining RB I’ve been invited to exhibit in 2 galleries in the past month, not to mention selling a mounted print and some cards online. All power to you!

I have to say red bubble is one of my favorite sites. It is quick and clean to use. My day job is a website analyst and the structure and robustness of the site works very well. I like that I can upload very large files as opposed to most sites tiny file sizes (this does impact quality). I like the way it’s well laid out and when someone bought some artwork they loved it so much (the quality of the physical card and the image) they actually started crying a little with emotion.

I’d say redbubble is doing well, but please keep it up.

    cheers

I’ll say this—This is hands down the best site I have found on the Internet for artists of every genre.
You are to be applauded for your efforts as are those who are simply members. I have procured many friendships (and a few not so good relationships, lol) that I will treasure forever. These are some of the most talented individuals I’ve ever known on this site. I am truly blessed to be associated with every one of them.

I just stumbled on this site one day and decided to give it a shot. Its a wonderful idea and there is a fantastic variety of art here. Something for everyone. I have a website and I am on two other photographic sites which I have to pay membership with so this is a great idea. I have only been here a month and haven’t sold but I have high hopes! The only thing I might suggest is more promotion and advertising as it was a fluke I even found your site and I have an idea there are alot of people out there the same.
    Keep up the great work!

Redbubble.com is a fantastic site. I know exactly how difficult it is to realise all your ideas into a successful website as I have done this over 8 years, in my spare time, with people who I have only ever seen once. Trust is the key issue and a belief in what you can achieve.
Rallyeinfo.com only breaks even to pay the server costs and would need a massive commitment from all involved for them to quit their day jobs and make it really work. It’s great to see you guys and girls turning what I expect was a dream in someones head into a very viable and unique worldwide business. You have hit the nail on the head regarding sharing your ideas and informing users what you are up to and what you intend to do. Why use your own staff to come up with ideas when the site visitors in their thousands can submit hundreds of ideas that you have probably either never considered or dismissed because you thought nobody needed it. This is how the web is meant to be.
Thanks for giving me a platform to share my work and I am staggered by the quality of your printing at the prices you charge bearing in mind the logistics involved.
Many thanks and keep the site growing slow and steady.
    Thanks to you all

Alway thought this was a well run machine, some other sites I find to hard to get around because they are to big and they have to many options ie www.saatchi.com I like this site because it does what it should do and also manages to look well designed. Just dont fall in the trap of offering too much, stick with what your good at, focus on quality and the future looks great.

I like the ‘nerve centre’ idea. What about expanding it to make the nerve centres places of artistic learning – classes in photography, writing, digital manipulation etc etc – classes run by talented RB people who ahve the skills and experience in their areas, people pay a fee to attend the class and the teacher gets paid as well.

certainly, RB seems to get better and better. Of course there will always be more things to do, more projects, but you seem to be hitting the target!

In terms of selling, I would like people to be able to buy our digital images – in the ‘stock photo’ way.

Also, to see RB more broadly advertising itself to encourage sales. I would be happy to pay an annual registration fee (say 5.00 UKP) for this purpose…....... just a couple of thoughts.
