New Products: Matted Prints & Interchangeable Frame

Hello,

We’re looking to introduce a matted print to RedBubble in a couple of weeks time. The print area would be one size to start (max 10 by 15 inches) with an overall matte dimension of 17 by 23 inches. We’re aiming for the base price to be $25-$30. The matted print would be backed with thick card stock and would have a hanging device on the back of them (like mounted prints) so they can be directly hung on the wall. We’re also looking to introduce a ‘interchangeable frame’ that could be used to house the matted print – the theory is that it would be easy to swap a matted print in and out. The base price for the interchangeable frame is yet to be finalized but it’s likely to be $60-$80.

The matt board and backing board will be acid free. The frame will be made of solid timber sustainably harvested in Australia (no rainforest timber). Mountain Ash for those who know their Australian timbers.

So a few quick questions:

1. Is the matted print a product that you’d be interested in?
2. Is the interchangeable frame something you’d be interested in?
3. Do you want the want glass/perspex in the interchangeable frame (or nothing in front of the print)?
4. Would you be happy to sell your art as a matted print?
5. Do you want other sizes for matted prints?
6. What other questions do we need to answer?

Here are few images of the prototypes:

Matted prints are a brilliant idea …. customers seem to have such varying ideas of what actual frames they like, and the interchangeable frames is also a very clever idea!

  • Ginny Schmidt

    Ginny Schmidt

Matted print sounds good to me, and yes I’d be thrilled to sell my work any way it’s offered. The interchangeable frame is also a good idea, because the finished size of 17×23 inches isn’t quite standard, at least in the US, so having something available for the matted print is super. I like the idea of swapping pics out, which looks easy to do from the photo above. I would vote no for glass but a definite yes for a non-glare acrylic, especially if it were UV protected.

there are sites out there( such as www.lul.com) that produce “coffee table” books of prints, usually with 50-80 full page shots, either glue bound, spiral bound or the like….any plans to produce anything like that before i order one through other site

  • RedBubble replied

Absolutely! We’re in the process of setting up the printing arrangements at the moment – Tom has been in the US the last couple of week and is off to Europe later this week. The hardest thing is quality binding – done on demand. Realistically for us it’s probably 3 – 6 months away … but you never know. My understanding is that Lulu uses the iGen … in my view the only printer for photo books is the HP Indigo – so be cautious. We used the Indigo for the calendars – and after we sorted out some teething problems we were very happy with the results.

  • Dennis Gay

    Dennis Gay

    G’day RB,

    1. Is the matted print a product that you’d be interested in?
YES!” But why not accepted standard photograph sizes? ie 8×10, 8×12, 16×20 and even an 8×8

    2. Is the interchangeable frame something you’d be interested in?
YES!* To suit standard photograph sizes as above.

    3. Do you want the want glass/perspex in the interchangeable frame?
    YES! Glass preferably.

    4. Would you be happy to sell your art as a matted print?
    YES!

    5. Do you want other sizes for matted prints?
    See above!

    6. What other questions do we need to answer?
    a. What will be the colour range in matts? I suggest basic black, white and very light cream!
    b. A simple basic black frame for monochrome would be good!

    GB
    Dennis

  • RedBubble replied

Dennis – we thought an 8×12 looked too small in the 17 by 23 matte board … and we’ve gone for this size matte board as we thought it would be a good first standard.

  • Steven Lippis

    Steven Lippis

Would definitely be interested in matted prints and the interchangable frame.

I think it needs size options like we already have (although that could do with expanding on all fronts!)

I’d be happy to sell art as a matted print, people may want a particular frame they want to match their decor/existing frames, but at the moment that isn’t an option.

    I prefer glass over perspex.

  • LoriSmaltz

    LoriSmaltz

Maybe put the art on something useful such as a kitchen hot trivit?
Or wall paper border or curtain valance? These are things people already buy without selecting art.

It would be a good way for someone buying to become familar with the art and perhaps return to buy larger, framed (more expensive) pieces?

    Charles Dobbs ...

    1. Is the matted print a product that you’d be interested in?

    Yes

    2. Is the interchangeable frame something you’d be interested in?

    Yes

    3. Do you want the want glass/perspex in the interchangeable frame (or nothing in front of the print)?

I think glass would be nice.

    4. Would you be happy to sell your art as a matted print?

    Definitely!

    5. Do you want other sizes for matted prints?

We should always give the customer options.

    6. What other questions do we need to answer?

Shipping costs are one of my concerns. How much will the cost be for standard vs. express? Will these items be shipping from Australia or elsewhere, and will that affect the cost for standard or express shipping? With the current express shipping cost on cards and framed prints being ridiculously high versus laminated and mounted prints, no one will ever pay for express shipping if these new items follow the same model.

    6. What other questions do we need to answer?

Here where I live , when you go to an artists market most of the artists do sell their work with the matte only. I donot want to invest money in frames cause then I have to raise the selling price of my artwork. I want to sell artwork not frames.

People tend to want to fame it themselves whether its a cheap frame from WallMart or an expensive one from a framing store.

Mattes only from RB is a great idea

Great idea.. rounds off your supply options well.
Naturally offer of larger sizes at later date as need and demand shows is welcomed.
I don’t think it needs to have hanging option as I see this as a ready form for persons to buy and frame in own or off the shelf form….just check on what is standard size ?
The mounted prints now provide the hanging look version.
Also please make it without artists name title option! Thanks for ongoing upgrades…
Just provide the matte in white and black options to begin with would be good.

  • Bill Morgenstern

    Bill Morgenstern

when I have my images matted and framed I use over sized mats to present a strong view of the image. I find this really promotes sales as a “work of art”. Since image sizes vary it could work for both the matting and interchangeable framing if a set of standard sized images are agreed upon across the range, including panoramics. For glass, I’d make sure it is UV protected. Overall, I like the prospect of having a finished image available that is matted and ready to hang.

    1. Is the matted print a product that you’d be interested in?
    not personally
    2. Is the interchangeable frame something you’d be interested in?
personally no, since it would cost too much to ship to UK
    3. Do you want the want glass/perspex in the interchangeable frame (or nothing in front of the print)?
choice of glass or perspex, including UV protection
    4. Would you be happy to sell your art as a matted print?
    yes
    5. Do you want other sizes for matted prints?
    very definitely yes
a single ratio restricts the number of images its suited to (basically only uncropped 35mm and DSLRs). 3:2 is not a particulatly harmonious ratio, and doesn’t match most paper sizes
a single size restricts where a buyer can use it.

Yes to all. Great idea. Now I really have a goal to strive for & that being larger prints than the ones I’ve been sending in.

    1) I Think this is great but I totally agree with Dennis Gay in regards to the different sizes 8×10,8×12,and 16×20 etc.
    2) Yes
    3) I think Glass would be better
    4) i am not too sure because I feel that some art looks great in Matte where other look awesome in gloss. (Hopepfully, we would be able to choose.
    5) SEE ABOVE BUT yes.
6)Okay, I am on a roll. :o) so I will continue. I would really like to see more colour to choose from Example: When you go hit Laminated Prints in there, is only white and black) It would be nice to have more colours to choose from. Also, I see that there is no T-shirts for little kids.It would be nice if we could have that and PAJAMAS (even with the feet in them), There has been so much art work where I have thought it would be cute on pjamas, HOODIES, mugs. I am not too sure where I was reading it on Red Bubble but Is it true that if you buy a large t-shirt that it stll fits small??? What about going internation sizes?? (I have no idea how that works LOL. but something to think about. I have been kinda hesitating on buyin T-shirts after I read that. If someone could answer that It would be great. Also, in the clothes department it would be nice if we could have even more colours but wild. Also, maybe even different textures (Example ; Satin) Couldn’t think of anything eles except for that. LOL but you know what I mean??
Also, why not a box where you can choose pictures and it does a slide show. Have different amounts in the box ( like 25,50,75.,100 pictures) Like a slide show. If you are not too sure on what I am talking about ask me and I will tell more. :o)
Oh, one more thing. On T-shirt it would really be nice if we could somehow do a back and front. You know how you have sayings on the front and than you turn to the back and it tells the answer???
Well, that is all I can think of now. Who knows maybe I will come back and say something elese.

I knew I forgot something ;o) What about baby stuff???? I think that would be very cool, somehow, putting pictures into blankets. little t-shirts. There is alot of people on Red Bubble where they do kids designs that would be great but you can’t get it from red bubble.

  • Gordon Merrick Justice

    Gordon Merrick...

    1. Eh, likely not… it doesn’t differ very much from what is already offered.
    2. Very much no… indeed, I hate to say this may be the worst idea I’ve yet heard of RB considering implementing.
    3. If it actually made it through to production, adding the glass would make it just a cheaper version of the Framed Print, unless of course one opts for the changeable frame, which would push it over the top to a “in fits of mania only” purchase.
    4. I can’t really say… depends on the work.
    5. If you’re going to do it, yes, most definitely, three or four ideally.
    6. Do you think perhaps we can think outside of the box a bit more for the next addition to selling forms… I mean, we are in a bubble, let’s get some more round-about thinking going on…

Oh, one other thing (after being such a downer as far as my opinion of mounted prints are concerned, here’s a more positive note).
As artists we have to get our names out there, right? So how about letter-heads, stationary, business cards, heck, even artist bio pamphlets. I think getting those who produce work on RB to gain some notoriety of their own could only help bring more “front-door” buyers to the site.

    Alex Whitcroft

    1. Yes, they can be really good for galleries and small spaces where reflections are an issue.
    2. Personally I would almost always want white.
    3. I would definitely want glass or perspex in front. A reflection reduced glass/perspex would be even better.
    4. Yes.
    5. A6 up to A2 (maybe even A1 sometimes).

ALL of the above hangs on the “MATT” prints being on SMOOTH MATT paper, NOT textured (like watercolour paper).

    No

  • Mark Snelson

    1. Is the matted print a product that you’d be interested in?
    yes, great option
    2. Is the interchangeable frame something you’d be interested in?
interesting idea – but it would only work for standard sizes – anyone who crops their work at all wouldn’t benefit (I think? umm – tricky)
    3. Do you want the want glass/perspex in the interchangeable frame?
    yes
    4. Would you be happy to sell your art as a matted print?
    absofinglutely
    5. What other questions do we need to answer?
more mat color choices* I know screens vary, but if artist could say purchase a sample kit of the mats you’re offering, then only offer the colours they think are suitable for the print, it would be a plus.

    Yes to all.
A very good question was raised about ratios. I assume the print would be cropped to suit the matt? We need to standardise on dimensions, or at least ratios across the board so that what we upload is what is printed.
Oh, and PLEASE no Redbubble or artists details on the front.

Just thought of another thing – as has been pointed out, it seems the matted prints would be ideal for markets, so if particular attention could be paid to wrapping so that it is ready to sell, that would be great. A nice clear wrinkle free plastic envelope for each print would mean market ready prints. I think this may be very attractive to a a lot of bubblers who are considering this sort of outlet.

yes to the questions….. non reflective clear perspex in front would be my choice….. more matte color choices would be nice …. an adjustable frame would be nice especially if it’s interchangeable….... will this impact the sales of framed prints…$123.50 for a 12”x15” framed print now, compared to $25-$30 for a larger piece 12”x15…one would rather choose the latter… and either shop for a frame, or use an existing one….i’d be in favor of small medium and large once the program gets good response…

sounds like a great idea guys and girls, and it is always a good idea to introduce new things as you can always remove the option at a later time..

  • Denzil

    Denzil

Yes to all of the above, plus a couple of extras:
    please, no artists’ names on the front, just on the back as with the current mounted prints;
    glass/perspex should be an option rather than a given;
    really support the idea of a clear plastic sleeve;
    really support the opportunity to automaticallly update our sales options to include these matted prints, if we can just let you know that’s what we want rather thanhaving to update each of our works;
and also really support expanding the range of merchandise in the future – business cards would be a great idea, and also portfolio books. Not to mention the usual mousepads, mugs, sweaters, etc. I know that I would buy a full range of this sort of merchandise (as well as the framed prints) as gifts – both of my own work, as well as others. Also postcards – excellent idea how about going for this one first ???
Fantastic work guys, keep the great ideas coming, we love ‘em all, we’ll buy ‘em all!

    Will Hore-Lacy

Awesome, this is previously how I preped most of my stuff for sale for a number of reasons. One, it looks good. Two, it is light and protects the print for easy shipping. Three, it is ready for a frame. Four, it is more afforadable than selling with a frame (both for the buyer and less capital outlay for the seller). Five, it give the buyer their own choice of frame.
I’d been chatting with Xavier about something like this, definitly excited!

Additional question, when you say one size, is that the maximum dimension as for current prints or will you be cropping to fit that exact size? Same goes for the outside dimension of the matt and frame size. I realise differnet sizes complicates things but just wanted to clarify what you are doing and where you are heading. Thanks!

Like others would like to see standard photo or atleast standard frame sizes

Having them cello wrapped, or atleast supplied with cello envelopes

Would it be possible to have the bottom a little wider than the top and sides as this looks way better than equal on all sides.

I support this idea, but we need the option of US customary units. why not have photograph sizes? of 8×10, 8×12, 16×20 and even an 8×8d As an option. I love your laminated prints, but they do not fit standard frams over ee in USA.

    1. Is the matted print a product that you’d be interested in?
The matted print looks to be a good quality product and adds to the high quality products buyers can purchase on RedBubble … YES

    2. Is the interchangeable frame something you’d be interested in?
The interchangable frame sounds like a good idea but i think if i were buying a print i would purchase it in the color that suited my decor “other furnishings” ... how often do people change the taste and decor and at what added cost to a regular unchangable frame …

    3. Do you want the want glass/perspex in the interchangeable frame (or nothing in front of the print)?
Glass would be the better choice in protecting the artists work, and giving a more professional and high quality standard of product within the bubble …

    4. Would you be happy to sell your art as a matted print?
We are all different and it’s nice to have choices … “more than Happy”

    5. Do you want other sizes for matted prints?
Size preference would add to the buyers choice … “Yes”

    6. What other questions do we need to answer?
If the interchangable framing were to go ahead, what color’s would be available for buyers to choose from ??

    5. Do you want other sizes for matted prints? – the more variation the better, but obviously within profitibility for you guys..

What other questions do we need to answer?

well its sort of unrelated – but my mum has asked me to ask you redbubble guys to make transfers available.
she likes a lot of the designs as t shirts, but not necessarily on a shirt or where they are.
she gave the example of being able to get a transfer and put that on her bag or hat…

obviously you keep doing the t’s but there might be a market for that one…

and i told paul V ages ago – you guys should do shoes – like really simple shoes, and people can upload patterns for the main sections.
then you have maybe a couple of main shhoe colours -black brown white..
so brown shoe with a muscularteeth pattern..

    how cool would THAT be?

Definite yes to matted prints – a size that fits in standard frames would be best for our customers. I realize that may be different depending on the country. Is there a size such as 16×20 (inches) that is universally available?

Offering a lustre or semi-gloss finish rather than the high gloss would be a big advantage. At times, the laminated prints are way too shiny to hang on a wall.

    1. Is the matted print a product that you’d be interested in?
Yes, as it gives people the matting, while letting them explore other third party frames.

    2. Is the interchangeable frame something you’d be interested in?
No, not for myself, as I seal all my frames to further protect them from moisture and contaminants. Although, others my like to swap out artworks in an interchangable frame… especially if they have space constraints.

    3. Do you want the want glass/perspex in the interchangeable frame?
Yes, as it is needed for sealing an artwork in the frame. You can always leave the glass out of the frame if you would rather not have it, but vice-versa is more difficult.

    4. Would you be happy to sell your art as a matted print? Yes!

    5. Do you want other sizes for matted prints?
Yes, I would definately like a variety of sizes, and even custom sizes ( possibly with an additional fee to make that feasable? ).

    6. What other questions do we need to answer?
Would there also be additional colours for the matting besides black and white?.

Glass but maybe an option to go anti-glare glass as well?

    4. Would you be happy to sell your art as a matted print?

Yes – sometimes matte is better than gloss depending on the image

    5. Do you want other sizes for matted prints?

Just the usual that’s already on offer for me

    6. What other questions do we need to answer?

Nothing that hasn’t been covered already

  • Jeremy Harrington

I think that the concept of producing coffee table books and/or portfolio style books is a great idea that many would embrace.. Id imagine that many Bubblers would buy books of their own work but I think it would also be good to have an option in the buy/preview page of something like “add to book” so that customers can go through RB galleries and select images they like and make a book out of works from different users..
Another option I think sounds interesting is the idea of perhaps making an option in the “edit your profile” page to add a scanned image of your signature that can be added to the prints at time of sale.. that way the seller could add a personal note to the work, however not all buyers may embrace this so maybe add it as an option at checkout?? Anyway thats my little idea

    1. Is the matted print a product that you’d be interested in?Yes
    2. Is the interchangeable frame something you’d be interested in?Yes

    4. Would you be happy to sell your art as a matted print?Yes – matte can add a different effect
    5. Do you want other sizes for matted prints? standard sizes would do.
    6. What other questions do we need to answer? Postage costs should be minimised (so maybe perspex is better than glass in weight terms), ensure taxes / customs are sorted for posting to Europe, or can we not get a printing partner in the UK now (that would boost sales here significantly I would guess, reduce postage costs and mailing times)

    Glass
    4. Would you be happy to sell your art as a matted print?
    Yep
    5. Do you want other sizes for matted prints?
A little bigger, perhaps, and some smaller options with standard mat sizes (eg 5×7 window, 8×10 matt)
    6. What other questions do we need to answer?
    None

The base price for the matted print seems a little high compared to similar services that do custom sizes and matting. The price for an interchangeable frame seems particularly expensive, probably because it’s a super high quality finish. Any plans for a ghetto-framing option? I’d like to use redbubble for fulfillment, but an equivalent service can be had considerably cheaper elsewhere.

I would Like to be able to see have/ or buy art on a coffee cup, but I know that might be a little bit too much though , all that wieght , breakage , and liability etc… and not to mention shipping and stocking costs and et all , but what do you think?? I am a LOVER of coffee I am seldom without my cup of coffee , and It would be nice to have a special cup with some top – quality art on it , by myself , or other artists… what do you say ?? just a thought, whilst I am sitting here drinking my late evening coffee..

  • Dragoncat

    Dragoncat

speaking of glass on framed art , glass can break what about other options like plexiglass, acryllic and such , there are some that would be better than others , like some that are quite durable and wont yellow or interfere with the veiwing of the picture… perhaps someone could look into that… just a thought… but I do like the idea in general of having something to protect the picture especially framed pictures, but there are other options besides GLASS.. so compare price/ quality etc of other options… as it would be nice if someones picture would get there , ahem , in one piece , and not hehe pieces , of well broken glass , as could very well be sometimes , if glass be used… so plastic of some kind might be better… just a thought…

  • Dragoncat

  • sharonsharpe

Choices are always a good idea. Some like non-glare glass and some do not. If you have any thickness to the mat (like double or triple) non glare glass distorts (the farther away it is from the image).

  • Lisa G. Putman

    Lisa G. Putman

I would love more choices in Matboard color, and background color for prints…at least a light neutral grey, and cream…of course I am a picture framer by trade…I always want more matting and framing choices. It makes sense to me that my customers may want to buy their own frame, but if I could choose the mat color that would look best, this makes me very happy. Taupe, beige, other browns and charcoal grey…neutral colors that work on most anything would be awesome. I like the idea of postcards. I would also like a print size that works for the square format…8 X8, 10 X 10, 12 X 12, (all standard size frames in the USA) and / or 18 X 18.
