Tuesday the 8th of March marks the centenary of International Women’s Day and to mark the occasion, events are taking place in more than 100 countries. International Women’s Day is a celebration of respect and appreciation for women the world over, an opportunity to celebrate their achievements and to reflect on the social, political and economic issues women face today and in the future. The day is an official holiday in over 20 countries including Afghanistan, China, Cuba, Laos, Madagascar, Mongolia, Montenegro, Russia, Uganda, Ukraine, Vietnam and Zambia.
RedBubble is home to many talented artists whose art and writing highlight issues faced by women. There are a number of groups dedicated to celebrating women artists or discussing feminist issues and sharing works that raise awareness of these subjects. The Pink Panther Magazine and The Woman Photographer are just two that spring to mind but a group search reveals many more.
To mark International Women’s Day we’d like you to invite you to share images which celebrate the women in your life – portraits of mothers, sisters, daughters, grandmothers or friends you admire (and don’t forget to tell us why). If you’re not sure how to link, here’s a step by step guide. We’d also love to see your favourite works by women bubblers, particularly those that address social, political and economic issues faced by women. Are there inspirational women artists on RedBubble you’d like to highlight? And how are people celebrating International Women’s Day in your part of the world? Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.

hey, some cool works here.

i know i don’t often do a lot here, but i do look around and love and admire a lot of the work here
i just wanted to share this work, “Ophelia” by Strawberries, as i think she does a lot of work that empowers women without often realizing it, often to do with social issues and agendas that women face today.

What a great way to celebrate the women of this world! Jo O’Brien is one of my favorite artists here on redbubble. She manages to tug at my heart-strings and capture emotion as its best and worst every time:

Have a good international women’s day everyone!
This is a portrait of my mother who lost her father at the age of four. At the top left, it’s a photo of her father, disappearing behind a blood stain. At the bottom there is a bombarded houses skyline. On the foreground, my mother is coming out of a pink rose, she is protected inside this flower and floats over the destructed city. I could not be there to protect her when her father died, so I am protecting her in my imagination.

I would like to share with you ‘Vigor’ (Viv) who has been an inspiration to me and many other ladies on this site. Women have an ability to share with each other ans open up to encourage…and this is one lady that knows how to do that.

There are so so many Women Artists and Writers here that I would love to name…and so many ways I appreciate other Women on this site, as mentors, beacons, and incredible supports to myself and so many here- …I could be here all night..and still leave somebody out..Thank-you to all my great Bubble Sisters, and a shot that once seen and felt will never be forgotten, from Madworld – which is a celebration of self-acceptance and for me one of the most empowering stories on RB. xxx

Happy International Women’s Day – almost over in our part of the world!!! So many wonderful women, both here on RB and in other parts of my life, it would be embarrassing to start listing them. Know you are appreciated, admired, loved, respected …
Here is a pic of my mother and me, taken in Cornwall, England, about 1960.

Hope this works, haven’t tried this sort of link before …

To all the woman who have made it possible for my daughters to have the athletic opportunities that weren’t available to girls when I was growing up. We didn’t have leagues for sports, and we weren’t expected to be physically strong.
I’ll never forget when they used me as an example on how not to throw a ball, instead of teaching me how to. My daughter, Chrissy, was swimming at 2, kayaking at 4 ( really) and passed the presidents fitness test by a mile with her 30 pull-ups ( I think 12 was needed).
This is for all the women athletes and supporters who
have broken gender barriers in Sports.

My daughter is one of the most inspiring women in my life… I wish I could say she’s a mini me, but she’s much more inspiring, and beautiful on the inside and out than I ever was.
The other most inspiring woman in my life is my mom who made parenting 6 children look like a walk in the park! She’s a very strong courageous woman… full of love, kindness, and laughter that keeps our family close even after the loss of my father – the love of her life two years ago!

Since being a member on Red Bubble over the past year and a half, I have had the wonderful opportunity to meet women from all over the world and have come to realize that we are the same. This site has made the world just a bit smaller and brought other women a bit closer. I want to share in the celebration of the wonderful women from all around the world who have made a great difference in my own life. Thank you all!!!

I can remember being “the” girl physics major in college. Girls were not suppposed to be able to understand math and physics. As someone stated above, I am glad our daughters have opportunities that we did not have growing up. May the women of China and Afghanistan someday have the freedom to pursue their God given talents and be appreciated for ALL they do. Thank you, RB, for recognizing the contributions of women everywhere.

In Honor of my Mom
The most selfless and courageous woman

I was raised by a strong, brave, single mother. She remains a focus for my respect and love. I have the joy of living with a strong, brave and beautiful partner and 3 daughters (not yet the above but getting there). So I will just say thanks to everyone for sharing their images.

Thank you Redbubble Happy 100th International Women’s Day My daughter has celebrated many an International Women’s Day. Now she is a new mom. This photo was taken last fall.

my mother!
Here is a painting recently completed showing a woman who was once fiercely independent, one of the only Mums who worked a full-time job as a school nurse, as well as playing piano in a dance band on Saturday nights. She was aslo the first mum I knew to have her own car and licence. Mum wasn’t a single mother, but my father had an accident when I was a baby, losing all of the fingers on his left hand, so Mum had to be the major breadwinner as Dad had lost his career vocation as a carpenter. Today, she is badly scarred from the after-effects of a stroke, the sad thing is, she can remember who she once was – now she is fighting dependency on others, but knows that her life will never be the same, she is 86,wishing she were 26, trying to always look back to her “glory days”. She is an inspiration to 2 kids,5 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.

DragonFlyer
There have been many women here on Red Bubble who have inspired me, supported me and helped me over these past years.
I would like to add a tribute to one special woman who is no longer with us – Pagly4U
Raised by a Bangladeshi woman, she became a psychiatrist here in Australia in the years when it was rare for women to even study medicine, let alone achieve specialisation in psychiatry. She did not follow the course so many in that profession did – relying on “medicines” to treat “diseases” that were, so often in fact truly reactions caused by what she clearly saw were the inequities and even abuses experienced by so many as they were growing up.
She spent her time on Red Bubble offering support and encouragement to the many members here, especially women, who struggle with their lives, most often because they experienced significant abuse and/or neglect as they were growing up. Despite her own difficulties, being confined to a wheelchair, she gave of her self and her boundless love freely and joyfully – virtually to the day she died last year.
One day she simply was no longer there to answer any of the many bmails she would receive from so many who loved her and needed her.
Pagly – you are missed by many.
And for me – my special mama knows who she is. But, I know she wants to remain anonymous in the broader community. I love you mama.
And – my best friend. Where would I be without you?
All my love – not just once, but every, every day.
Martin – a lovely tribute to the most important women in your life here, amongst so many.

GIRLS IN MY CIRCLE
Unknown
When I was little, I used to believe in the concept
of one best friend.
And then I started to become a woman.
And then I found out that if you allow your heart
to open up, you will be shown the best in many friends.
One friend is needed when you’re going through things
with your partner.
Another friend is needed when you’re going through
things with your parents.
Another will sit beside you in the bleachers as you
delight in your children and their activities.
Another when you want to shop, share, heal, hurt,
joke, or just be.
One friend will say, ’Let’s cry together,’ another,
’Let’s fight together,’ another, ’Let’s walk
away
together.’
One friend will meet your spiritual need, another
your shoe fetish, another your love for movies, another
will be with you in your season of confusion,
another will be your clarifier,
another the wind beneath your wings.
But what ever their assignment in your life, on
whatever the occasion, on whatever the day, or wherever you
need them to meet you with their gym shoes on and hair
pulled back,
or to hold you back from making a complete fool of yourself……..
Those are your best friends.
It may all be wrapped up in one woman, but for many,
it’s wrapped up in several…..one from 6th grade,
one from high school, some from the college years,
a couple from old jobs.
On some days your mother. On some days your neighbor.
On others, your sisters, cousins.
And on some days, your daughters.
So whether they’ve been your friend for 20 minutes
or 20 years, let them know they have made a difference in your life.

As with so many others before me, I truly believe that my beautiful daughter is the most wonder-full ‘little woman’ in the universe :-) She inspires me, supports me, educates and challenges me and continually delights me: we are such a great team, and I love her with everything that I am. May she go from strength to strength and always remain what she was born – LOVE embodied, pure and simple:
