Homepage, it's new. by RedBubble

Posted on February 24, 2010

You might remember quite some time ago we here at RBHQ started working on a new homepage. We did some nerdy A/B testing to figure out whether it was awesome or not and, after chatting with you, we crawled back into our Baxter-shaped boxes to keep working. Well, it’s back, it’s done and we’re excited to finally see it live.

We know the majority of your buyers land deeply in the site directly on your work and may never even see the homepage, so we feel the homepage is primarily about setting a tone for new members of the site and getting them to join our community. You’ll notice, that tone is your art. Big, bright, front and center to welcome new visitors and ask them to join in. For other visitors who are here to purchase, we’ve got the two big clear links straight through to the browsing experience.

But what about the grid of 8 images then?
Well, never-fear homepage lovers the grid is still ever-present at the tail end of the slideshow. We also choose a random start point for the sequence of 8 so you all get your fair share. Pro Tip: You can get to the grid quickly but clicking the image one to the left straight away when the page loads.

And Where’s the Buyers’ Booth?
We did take a few things off the homepage, but the Buyers’ Booth is still here. You can get to it through the Community tab and we’ve got some redesigns coming through that will make it a little more exciting and prominent later on. For now, the best way to checkout the Buyers’ Booth is by adding Mr. Baxter to your watchlist and you’ll see the winners each week.

It’s always hard to explain RedBubble in one short quippy sentence, so Paul put on his hardhat and gave us complicated pulley-driven-lever-system to change the tagline on the homepage whenever we like. (Baxter is going to love that – so keep your eye on it)

You’ll notice that we’ve taken a hacksaw to the original redesign to bring the homepage back down to the minimum of what it needs to be. No stuffing around, here we are, this is what we’re about, and welcome to RedBubble.

Where is the link to the writing section?

    am I missing something….

The image-based link to the Writing section on the old homepage had very very little traffic using it compared to people just using the nav at the top, so we’ve left it just up the top for now.

The link to the cards/photography etc, takes you straight to the ‘featured art’ page but the tshirt link takes you to a different looking page where you see the featured t’s but with a ‘buy’ button and also see all the info re the tshirts. I think the art link should do the same rather than go to features and show samples of cards, prints, etc?

I can see how that would be tricky, you don’t want to have a link to every product on the homepage but at the same time you need to let the visitor know they can purchase the art as tshirts, framed prints, canvass, etc. Maybe you could feature a ‘product’ or two on the homepage and alternate them the same way you do the art? I’m sure whatever you work out will be great.

Hmm, I just noticed that all the images selected work well in the widescreen format, will this be a disaster for images that don’t suit cropping to wide format, eg portraits with heads chopped off, and brilliant compositions ruined?

  • RedBubble:

We’ve always had this problem with square images anyway – except it was for both directions. And with the general shape of computer screens, we have to choose one way or the other. In this case, yes, certain portrait images don’t work too well, but we preview the images before they go on there, so we’ll be doing our best to get portrait images in there that don’t look too odd.

  • RedBubble:

Hey Carla – the page is actually a smaller download than the old homepage – so your dial up shouldn’t affect the time it takes to display. As for the other page layout problems, can you duck into the support section and give us some more details on which page and what browser/OS you’re using etc. Cheers.

I don’t like it, sorry. I love seeing 9 images all in one go and being able to choose straightaway which to visit rather than waiting like I have to now. Now it takes me to the member’s image, then have to go back and start again for the next. Plus what about the people on dialup. Those big images will take ages to load. Also, members choose the home page images. That will put a spanner in the works for them now, figuring out the new way to do it. A few reasons why it’s no go for me.

  • RedBubble:

Hi there rightasrain – We did think about these things. If you’re logged in, just press the left button on the slideshow once and you’ll get the grid of 8 straight away. For the dialup users, this page is actually smaller than the old one and will load faster. And we’re still using the community forum thread to choose the homepage on a regular basis.

I just had a look at the current home page when I wasn’t logged on an it is really unappealing and the left arrow just keeps cycling, never showing the eight.
The images that are there now just don’t work in that format (except for one of them) :-((

  • RedBubble:

Correct Matt – users who aren’t logged in just get the slideshow by design. And we’re still learning about what does and doesn’t work on the homepage now too – they’ll change soon, don’t worry.

  • AlisonJohnston

    AlisonJohnston

I just pressed the left arrow, and yes, it did take me to the old style page …….. How are visitors going to know to do that ?

  • RedBubble:

They’re not meant to. The main way we want new visitors to see the images is in the large format.

  • schizomania

    schizomania

It should show the 8 featured pictures first THEN go into slideshow. No one is going to notice the arrow unless you tell them.. A lot of unregistered people come to the homepage and will see one, maybe two images instead of the well deserved eight. It just doesn’t seem fair, even if they are random every time. I had the homepage once, it was magical, and every view counts to me. I just feel there would be much less in this format.

  • RedBubble:

I will have to disagree with you here. The one large image has such a stronger impact as a first visitor than the smaller squares. We don’t need people to see the arrows, that’s why we pick a start image by random and progress through the images automatically. I think you’ll find that on average, the click throughs on images that reach the homepage will increase.

I’ll get used to the new home page. It’s essentially similar to the old one, it’s just got some new stuff on it. But if it brings in more members and that was your original goal, then cool. :)

  • RedBubble:

Thanks Jessica – and let’s not forget that members are also more likely to be buyers of other people’s work too…

Would prefer to see the 8 together upfront, maybe with an option button ‘View slide show’ or similar.

I prefer the older version! One quick glance to have an overview. This takes to long to view, it’s too slow for the 1 Mbit internet connexions (or less) around the world and believe me, there are a lot!!, and it’s no fun to copy/paste on your pages after you’ve featured on the frontpage.
It looks beautiful but I prefer practical in this case (and I don’t do that very often ;))

  • RedBubble:

Actually the new homepage is smaller and faster to load and the 8 images are still there at the end of the slideshow when you’re logged in to screenshot from if that is what you’re after.

Wow!! it’s BIG!! It looks good, more impact, better quality of images but – at the moment – I think I prefer the old homepage, I like logging on and seeing several smaller images, I like the impact compostionally of images of varying mediums all sharing a theme juxtaposed. Just a visual preference, however gimme a homepage feature and I may just change my tune. Hehehe. Love the fact you’re always trying to improve guys, good work.

Ok I’ve just revisited it, I scrolled through and I see the panel of eight images at the end of the display, cool. However I think it would be more logical visually to start with the eight and then scroll through individually. Perhaps thats just me, I am a lefty so could be back to front…or front to back, aye? Oh I don’t know.

Having lived with it a little bit now in its wonderfulness, because its pretty HOT- I can help but totally agree with Ausven’s comment above…..

When you log in you see one big image and then you need to linger till it scrolls through all- a new visitor might not realise this and might not be “grabbed” by that first big image- If it starts with the 6 together, then scrolls through all, I think that would make much more sense and visually offer the diversity first- then the detail.

I have to be the devil’s advocate here and say I prefer the old way. If it aint broke don’t fix it I say.

I am someone who likes to access and view things quickly and see the overall picture. So to have to scroll through the images one at a time, takes more time and I probably wouldn’t do it all that much. I do realise that this is to give each artist their individual exposure though.

I liked seeing the overall images featured on one page. I also liked that often the HP itself, when all the images were combined harmoniously, was like a piece of art work itself.

  • RedBubble:

As I mentioned up the top there, if you want all 8, just press the left arrow once at the start of the page load, it will go straight there for you.

  • myoriginalsin

Looks like most people love the new home page. I’m more neutral or still deciding. Granted, it is nice to show more of the artwork, but I liked getting that quick view of all the featured works on the old page from which I could then take the closer look at the ones that appeal. I don’t care to wait for the slideshow now or to use the arrows to click thru myself. But since I seem to be in the minority, I will just have to get used to it! :)

It’s not working properly for me, I get to the Homepage and if any pic comes up at all it stays there, doesn’t change and even clicking the arrow does nothing, but never mind, cause I’m not real fond of it anyway, much prefered the old one, it was interesting and exciting to look at and check all the stuff out on it plus it looked great when you saved it when you got a Home Page Feature, I used to love going into Red Bubble from it just so I could look at the days theme, seems pretty popular though so maybe it might grow on me.

  • Richard Horsfield

    Richard Horsfield

I think it looks great, very professional and targeted well to your main audience, which as you say is new artists, not prospective buyers.

I’d like to see the main image content shuffle every hour though, to make it even more relevant to your existing customers, and encouraging new members to view existing work.

I agree with the suggestions about beginning with the 8 picture and then sliding into the large picture format, also, I know when you’re logged in you can’t see the big sign up sign over the images, but for new members not logged in, I think it’s an eyesore and screams desperation, also spoiling the look of the artwork that is highlighted. So both good and bad aspects to it I guess…
