Hello,
As foreshadowed in the roadmap we’re introducing paper greeting cards. Next week in fact. These new cards will be replacing the current photo greeting card. For those who would still like to buy the photo greeting card it will still be available via a private order process (I’ll post about the private order process when we release the new cards).
The reasons for not offering photo greeting cards and paper greeting cards are that we think it would be confusing to have such similar products and the manufacturing process we’re using can’t be localised (we’re in the process of localising all production to reduce our environmental foot print and reduce the delivery time).
The new paper greeting card is digitally printed using the best darn printers we could find (we use the same printer for calendars). The cards will be available in two sizes, 4×6 inches folded and 5×7.5 inches folded and they’re printed on thick card stock. We’ve chosen these sizes because they have a 2:3 aspect ratio – the same as most digital SLR cameras – so more of your images will print full bleed. When the image doesn’t have a 2:3 aspect ratio we’re going to change the way we display the image so there’s white space around the entire image (at the moment we just put white space on two edges). We think white space around the entire image looks much better. See below for a before and after.

The cards will be available in two finishes: gloss and matte. Pricing is still being locked down but the base price is likely to be:

Note the volume breaks – these volume breaks will apply to the total order of cards. Each card will also be shipped with an envelope.
It’s pretty exciting for us to be back in ‘release mode’. After greeting cards will follow post cards and hoodies – with a bit of luck all in February.
Paulette Wright
Looks great, Peter! Can’t wait to try them out!
Mike Emmett
Awesome. I love the image quality of the photo cards, but to be honest, I treat them like a small print, not a card! Paper cards will get me sending them to people…
Jan Timmons
“volume breaks”! Great news, Peter!
Priska Wettstein
Postcards sounds good!
Thanks.
Ginny York
Will we still have the option of a black background if the image doesn’t fit?
RedBubble:
Only a white background – this keeps the printing cost down as black requires a lot of extra ink.
oddoutlet
yay can’t wait for the post cards and hoodies- liking the fact that it’s decreasing the environmental footprint : )
Dayonda
Looks like it will work. The wite around the whole card looks pretty shabby on the example, though, Peter. At least to me it does. If it is what we can get, then it’s what we can get.
I’ll just reconfigure my best ones to fit and withdraw the others as cards.
RedBubble:
They look great in person.
MaeBelle
Cool! You guys are doing such a good job! the volume breaks look good, :o)) God Bless,Mae
samedog
Good to see volume pricing in there, may be more attractive for buying in bulk and selling in person. Is black background still going to be an option?
RedBubble:
Black is not an option at this stage.
Geoffrey Dunn
Ahhh … mush improved …especially for square croppers like me. Keep up the good work … looking forward to postcards!
adgray
Looking good
But will there be the ability to have print inside the cards?
Or perhaps shoving the print across and having print down the side?
Just asking! Ü
Chookas! ♥
RedBubble:
Not at this stage – but this is an improvement we’d consider for the future.
dougie1page2
never heard the like! buy your birthday paper here!!!!! don’t think so
Dayonda
If we can get black around the whole pic on the cards, then I’ll go for it. I like my work on a black background, almost never on white.
janpiller
Yay!! I didn’t like the paper the old cards were printed on – it curled. But if you’re using the same printing process as the calendars does this mean the photo cards will be converted to CMYK colour space?
RedBubble:
Yes – it’s a CMYK printer.
Gene Walls
All VERY welcome news, Peter! Good moves, especially the volume discounts!
Vickie Emms
the pricing sounds better, I buy my own cards to use, and at cost with s/h they are around the $4 mark, this will be more reasonable, I will give away more of them :-)) Postcards will be most welcome!
Tiffany Atkin
sounds great for photographers (ie the new sizes are closer to the output of SLR cams)…but just curious, what about us illustrators? i create alot of my work especially to redbubble cardsize, so i’m guessing anyone in this boat will just have to re-size all their work? maybe you could offer an option to ‘position’ the image where we want it to go on the card, such as facebook allows when choosing what section of your photo becomes your profile pic…(i know facebook and rb are a dodgy comparison but that’s the only way i can think to explain it right now!)
:)
RedBubble:
The positioning software is pretty complex to use and explain – and out preference is to keep things as simple as possible.
Bonnie Robert
Post cards sound neat.
emmy2
Great idea. I’m looking forward to the new cards!!! Really like the volume discounts!!!
Tiffany Atkin
ps – definitely looking forward to postcards too!! ;) ………and hopefully more t-shirt colours in the near future??
Bob Hall
Glad to see it coming to pass, looking forward to see them!
Pagly4u
What can I say…..that hasn’t been said…………You are brilliant and KNOW your Job…
RB artists are Safe in your hands……………..Thank you for being you…..
Amy-lee Foley
Awesome i love it :o) xXxOoO
Pete Janes
:Ecstatic: I’ve been doing bulk orders elsewhere because of volume breaks, but I’d really rather have my business over here with RB. And framing all sides on the card sounds much better! Thanks for this great update!
Christine Wilson
Sounds great!
Amy-lee Foley
but i would still love love love love for you to bring back Kids T’s :o)
RedBubble:
so would we!
rightasrain
Thank you! Looks great. Love the white all around the image.
Marilyn Harris
Looks great!! Can’t wait for those postcards!! Thanks Peter!! :o)
Vicki Ferrari ...
WOW!!! This is wonderful!! Great news!!! :))
Tiffany Atkin
oh i agree with amy on the kids tees – would be awesome. still, one step at a time i guess you guys can’t offer everything all at once but it would be great to see it one day moving in the direction of offering many different kinds of products (not quite to the extent of zazzle or anything!) ;)
Colleen Milburn
Woohooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah!
stephaniemwood
Excellent! :D
Martyn Baker |...
Well done boys and girls of the RB fraternity
F.A. Moore
The volume break on the total cards ordered between all prints is wonderful news.
Sticking with the paper cards is good, especially since you will have postcards, which is fantastic news all by itself.
Hoodies?? How exciting. :D
Tizme
Looks great to me!
mimulux
white? i hope there is also a black option? other than that.. cool :)
TatumWulff
Sounds wonderful!! I like the look of the white surrounding the entire image vs. just two edges. Great news!! ;-))
Clare Colins
I look forward to seeing one in the ‘flesh’ ….so to speak.
Good luck with all the new and innovative ideas,
Clare
Ann Warrenton
Thank you, I like the sizes.
So if I understand it, the new cards will have white edges no matter what size a picture is? That is a shame. Most people I know like the whole card with the picture. However, we must allow for change. I don’t know what that will do to the cards groups. I hope we don’t lose some of them. I for one will have to change my guidelines in my card group.
Thank you for the information.
RedBubble:
Most of the time the cards will be printed full bleed – it’s only when the aspect ratio is significantly different from 2:3 that a frame or border will be introduced.
Ann Rodriquez
I’m quite excited about these new cards! I’m happy, too, that the ‘old’ cards will still be an OPTION. That’s nice.
Keep up the great work. We love you for it! :)
Elizabeth Moor...
Brilliant. Thank you! Will be ordering lots!! And of the postcards when they arrive too.
Anton Gorlin
hmmm…previous were good…is that new paper thin or thick?
Evita
♥ Looking good…
but… I hope we still have the option of a black backgroung too..??? ♥
Belinda "Billy...
Peter, I must be very daft or just the only one able to ask? But I dont understand what you mean? I don’t know what the difference will be and although I think I know , I am not 100% sure and I know a lot of adults older then myself will not understand either. Can you explain in laymans terms? Billy
Anita Inverarity
The product and pricing sounds fantastic- so pleased !! Looks like a resizing op will be needed for my illustrations but def worth it. I really hope there will still be the choice of black background.
Thank you for all these exciting developments :D xx
darrylfowler
at last volume discounts…
well done..
Tom Godfrey
Looks great guys -another winning idea
Marie Wintzer
Did it come with an envelope before? I really like that idea. And it looks good! Great!
nadine henley
terrific!
SusanAdey
Sounds good to me. I’ve bought both calendars and the old style card. I f the new cards are like the calendars then they should still be a quality product. That said I will still want the old style available as I have clients that have expressed they loved the quality and it was a major deciding factor.
Can we have a page somewhere on RB that lets us know what other things we can order as a special order and the pricing? Over time we will forget that we can still order the old style card independently.
Looking forward to the postcard. You guys are definitely burning the midnight oil to get these changes done – Thank You.
Fiona Kersey
looks fantastic…love it!! Great job guys…thanks for all your awesome work and hours you pour in to make this site what it is!
seppe
awesome – bring it on!
Jason D. Lader...
Yea!!! Keeping up with Keeping on. Well Done Looking forward.
So like does this mean that the Old Cards will be Collectible LOL
Hmmm Old School Card Trading group LOL okay okay I am outta here.
Joshua Hakman ...
Great news and well done guys!
Buckwhite
Sounds pretty good to me.
coppertrees
Outstanding, looking forward to the new changes
Cheryl Ridge
Appreciate you making this available, thanks! Are the dimensions you listed above firm? I would like to start thinking about some new designs. Now I will be more inclined to sell/give away cards I keep on hand rather than keeping them because “they are too nice to give away” LOL. I drag my cards around the country on road trips – like a type of portfolio!
RedBubble:
Dimensions are firm.
spittingimages
Sounds Great! Looking forward to postcards! Qty. price break too! Awesome job! You guys ROCK!
Zefira
sounds great. will we be able to print on back of postcards? appreciate the work you do.
RedBubble:
Not initially – but if the idea has enough support then we can do it.
NEmens
I’m definitely looking forward to trying this out! Wonderful information!
Keith Reesor
Outstanding!! :)
webbie
The volume sounds great…but does this also card sizes will change?
Harry Oldmeadow
Great move — all good!
Sonja Wells
Great job guys! How exciting! :D
Diana-Lee Saville
It’s all good!!! I better order me some more cards :))
maggiebarra
great!!
John Robb
Love it.
LisaLorenz
Great job. This looks much better! Way to go!
karenanderson
exciting news :)
Paul Adkin
Great news well done
Travis Easton
Awesome, can’t wait
Ginny York
Bummer. I don’t think the white will look good in the back of some of the images. I will have to make sure I have them fit the whole card. Will you give the different dimentions for each size? Or will the full camera size fit them all?
RedBubble:
The aspect ratio will be 2:3 – if you stick to that ratio all your images will print full bleed.
Jan Stead JEMp...
Hi. I love the price reduction in individual cost of cards for quantity. Does this apply to varying cards or multiple of the one card?
But cheaper prices overall should go down very well with bubblers and customers alike!!!
THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU’RE DOING FOR US. YOU ARE TRULY AMAZING!
joan warburton
Fantastic! Thank you!
Nancy Vice
I guess this would be the place to ask this question that has been on my mind for awhile concerning greeting cards. Can I create verses to go with my cards and would they be printed in the cards?
RedBubble:
Not at this stage – but if enough people want it we’ll look at it.
Kim McClain
Great news! Thanks! I love the plans and seeing the progress!
Corkle
Looks great!
Kay Cunningham
great idea
WatscapePhoto
What a terrific site this is. I am impressed. Bravo, RB!
Roger Barnes
I guess if people want black backgrounds (on the front), they can make a 2:3 image including it.
Lisadee Lisa D...
Great stuff – where are the financial year Calendars folks? :)
James Lewis Ha...
I, too am excited about ‘postcards’, as well as price break on these new card products.
chelsgus
Yay! -to more white space.
Looks heaps better with a white border around :)
Melinda Kerr
Good on you Peter. I love the option of gloss and matte. And I like more white space too. Very much like gallery cards. Two thumbs up from me and a couple of white paws from my puppy dog :)
Kelly Robinson
Looks much better with the white border – much more professional
Kelly Robinson
Plus the post cards are such an awesome inclusion
Gregory Ballos...
Awesome! Keep the Bubble rolling along!
Dana DiPasquale
So volume prices means we can purchase 20 different cards and get the break or 20 of the same card?
RedBubble:
You can purchase 20 different cards – but the size and finish will need to be maintained (they’ll all be made in one production run).
Vicki Pelham
Great news, I am really looking forward to seeing these new products, pricing and volume discount sounds wonderful!!!
Nancy Polanski
Since so many of my images have a black background, and black border is not an option, I would love to see an example of a black card with a white border. Any chance you could show us an example??
Ann Warrenton
Great thank you for the answer I needed :)))
Gerry Danen
I’m confused about “paper” vs “photo”. Wasn’t the photo printed on paper?
RedBubble:
No – it was printed on professional photo paper then bonded to paper.
mingtees
Looking really forward to it!
mingtees
One question tho – will it be possible to position the images ourselves (that aren’t 2:3) by using a template like with the tees?
RedBubble:
Not at this stage – that’s quite a complicated bit of software to write.
flame7
Oh? I have bought quite a few over the years, and give them away – I loved the fact that they were more like a photo – it made them unique. I will reserve judgement till I see them in person :) Love Love Love the idea of Postcards!!! And the pricing structure seems great – Would it be around the same in $AUS? Keep up the great work :))
Larry Davis
I was quite happy with the way they were.
I’m not enthusiastic about the lack of black, as that would have been my choice.
I will have to wait until I see and feel one, before I totally make up my mind…..
I will also be looking forward to reading the comments of the members once they are on the market….
Stan Wojtaszek
Too bad about the format. Would have been better, if you were offering two sizes, to have one fit 3:2 and the other to fit 4:3. There are sooooo many more 4:3 aspect ratio cameras in the world than 3:2.
AlisonJohnston
Looking good peter. I hope the cards are popular so we can get the interactive text :) Can we have a variety of different pics in the same volume pricing ?
RedBubble:
Yes – but at this stage the size and finish will need to be maintained to achieve volume pricing.
Hannah Fenton-...
I ordered cards yesterday, are they going to be paper? or the Photo greeting card? Im kinda bummed about the change… I guess i’ll have to order some to see the quailty before i continue to sell my work… I never like to sell stuff when i dont personally know what quality it is. When does this go into effect??? Im looking forward to the hoodies tho. (:
RedBubble:
Photo. The change will go out next week – we’ll write a post to let everyone know.
Hannah Fenton-...
Also do we the artist get to chose what our work can be sold as? ie: Photo greeting card or paper greeting card?
RedBubble:
The only product that will be available to the general public will be the paper greeting card. The private process will need to be used for the photo greeting card.
Veronica Schultz
Just wondering…Is there going to be some note in the order process for “outside people” (not people with red bubble accounts), so they know the cards have changed before they order them? The reason I ask is because everyone who has bought cards from me has raved about how great the quality is…specifically the paper they’re printed on. I would hate for people to think they’re ordering one thing, and then they get something else. Not so good for business. I do really like that we can choose between gloss and matte, and that there’s a choice in sizes. People like choices!
RedBubble:
Hmm … I have a think about this … it could be equally confusing to new outside people to read about the change.
Trots
It all sounds good to me! I have no problem with the quality of RB’s merchandise so far – I can’t see why this would be any different :)
Naomi Mawson
hoodies… yay!!
BrainCandy
So, no more millimetres or AU$… going “global” are we?
RedBubble:
A spreadsheet with five different currencies is a bit too busy. We’ll release all of the prices next week in local currencies – I just wanted to keep things simple today. We’ve actually always used inches as the measurement standard for most of our products … the photographic industry is still imperial.
Georgie Hart
Hooray, this is good news, looking forward to postcards too.
TomBaumker
Thanks for all the new info. Always waiting for something new to develop to help sales.I`m waiting on the post cards and their prices…..Tom
Cheryl Ridge
I love the quality of the current ones but agree that they can curl especially if left sitting on a shelf or window sill. I welcome any ‘practical’ changes, happy to accept all round borders on those that need it. I can always create my own backgrounds as part of the image. If I aim for a 4×6″ print area, how much should be allowed for trim/bleed?
RedBubble:
About 2.5 mm on the three edges that get trimmed.
WhiteDove Stud...
will it appear as a xerox copy folded in half………………..
AlisonJohnston
will it appear as a xerox copy folded in half………………..
LMAO – only yours kjgordon :-)
AngelArtiste
It;s exciting =) I’m glad about teh white space all around =) Now we can make border designs too; I think! Am I right? What is CMYK?
RedBubble:
Only if you’re using an aspect ratio that’s not 2:3 … otherwise the card will print full bleed and the borders are likely to be trimmed. CMYK is cyan, magenta, yellow black – the colours used in the printing process.
Robert Meyer
YIPPEE!
heatherfriedman
I don’t like the white space at all…full bleed is better…but…if you have to use white space, only use it on the two sides, otherwise you have diminished the photo…and the photo is what is being purchased!!
RedBubble:
Most images will print full bleed. It’s only image that are an unusual aspect ratio that will have the white space. If you stick with a 2:3 aspect ratio then the image will be full bleed.
GiselaSchneider
Fantastic, thanks for your continued improvement on the products RB offers!!!
Richard Williams
Excellent news, they look great!!!
Maria Dryfhout
I do not like it at all. Cheapens the look. It is All about the image. Our images.
This is not a smooth move.
What would be an improvement is for us to be able print INSIDE the card.
RedBubble:
What exactly cheapens the look – the move to paper or the framing of the image?
Victoria McGuire
Thanks for all the incredible and hard work you guys put in. When you’re juggling quality, quantity, technical limitations, and pricing, it’s a hard ask…I know, I’ve had years in publishing.
Knowing that you’re striving for the best, and given your artistic expertise, I think we can trust your judgement implicitly. Cheers, Victoria
MuscularTeeth
great work team force redbubble.
Jack McCabe
Now you’ve got my attention!
I’ve been pushing for less expensive items as well as POST CARD’s since 2008!
I think some folks misunderstood the white border vs full bleed options.
If I get it right you are going to produce full bleed unless the photo is out of ratio, in which case you will use white border all sides not just two sides.
Love your products, but I did notice that curling happens with the heavy photo paper stock.
I give you guys three √√√ checks!
Jack in RI
RedBubble:
If I get it right you are going to produce full bleed unless the photo is out of ratio, in which case you will use white border all sides not just two sides. Correct.
Yvonne Less
Great news! Thank you very much for all your hard work! :)
owlspook
I am bummed … the thousand or so cards I have designed for old card format will all have to be resized .. if possible … they will not look good on a white background .. also do not like the diminished size of the image with so much white border .. (sigh) … oh well I’ll deal with it …
.
one question needs to be answered .. how much should we allow for trimming? I not only need this information for my card designing but also for the group, Creative Cards that I host .. I already have members asking what these new changes mean for the group and for help in designing for the new format.
.
Even though I’m bummed about the cards I am happy about the postcards coming soon and love hoodies (big smile) …
RedBubble:
Let’s see how they look on the new cards – in most instances if the image was full bleed on the old cards they’ll be full bleed on the new card (if an image is close to the 2:3 aspect ratio we’ll round it to achieve full bleed). The production guys normally like 2.5 mm on each edge for trimming.
Stephen Colquitt
This sounds like a good move guys – price mark looks good too
John Tisbury
Awesome great move :-)
LarsvandeGoor
A great development, congrats
Franlaval
look interesting.

The white border around the cards looks so much better. Can’t wait to see the postcards & hoodies.
Ruby Pen
Great changes :)
KimTurner
Sounds great, and the volume bonus is great. I ordere calendars and the printing was superb!
For those wanting printing inside, while it is not an option through RB at the moment, I used to work in a printery, and often preprinted cardstock will feed back through printers just fine – you just need to set it to cardstock and work out positioning etc and you could easily print your required black & white text inside at home. Or cheaply enough through commercial printers. I think white borders also look more ‘gallery style’ level of printing, so either will be great. =)
Jason Asher
Looks great, just what they needed – I think these will boost popularity of the cards even moreso.
Manolya F.
Wonderful!
Cheryl Ridge
For those expressing disappointment, can’t images sometimes be adapted to certain dimensions/format by cropping or resizing of the image? The artist CAN have some control before they upload by way of an image editing program. Well, that is what I will be doing so I can take advantage of the new product.
Karen Brodie ...
All sounds great to me :))
Krys Bailey
I think maybe some people bought the old style cards to make mini framed prints. The finish quality was THAT good, and so the expense could be justified. These initial prices seem rather high for paper cards. I produce my own 8×6 photo front heavy duty cards for a cost price of around $1.20, without the benefit of extreme bulk buying material discounts.
ROUBLE RUST
I don’t like it all. I feel like everything is done only for the cost / money.
I don’t think anyone wants to have their art printed in a less quality paper. At least we could have an option! Why not offer greeting cards and paper greeting cards?
Is there going to be some explanation for non red bubble members, so they know that the cards have changed? I will feel shame for everyone who have bought cards already from me and will buy again because of the great the quality the paper was…
I’m not sure I like the new white space around the work (if it doesn’t fit)… And especially I don’t like that we won’t have the option of a black background – how did you think of that?
I will un check my works from any card purchase without the black bg option.
Bluesrose
Great news!
But is there any chance to get cards in square format?
owlspook
“Let’s see how they look on the new cards – in most instances if the image was full bleed on the old cards they’ll be full bleed on the new card (if an image is close to the 2:3 aspect ratio we’ll round it to achieve full bleed). The production guys normally like 2.5 mm on each edge for trimming.”
.
I’m willing to wait and see before I start resizing … my images design size was 920px by 1320px .. approximate ratio of 9:13 would that work? oh well we’ll see I guess … thanks much for the info (smile)
lightsmith
I have mixed feelings about the white space….. but that can be controlled anyway by getting the aspect ration right and adding our own white space I guess.
One REAL want is for the ability to add text to the inside of the card so that they really are greeting cards….. any chance?
Wendy J. St. C...
I’m behind the new card system, 100%! The only change I’d appreciate more, is an option for ‘matte finish’ on mounted prints, which is the one thing I’ve been waiting for from the beginning. Patience is a virtue, I know . . .
hologram
as per Bluesrose, could I ask how near are we to getting 1:1 ratio cards ? In local greetings card shops (UK), square formats are AS popular as any others, especially in the fine art ranges. Would be interested in your thoughts.
Keep up the great work :-)
Michelle Wrighton
Yay for the border all the way around…for those that want a black border (or any other colour) wouldn’t it just be a case of increasing the canvas size of the image with a black border and cropping it to 2:3 ratio before uploading to RB? That way would could position the image anywhere you want within the 2:3 aspect ratio envelope.
anaisnais
Great so long as we don’t lose the quality of cards…I’ve ordered before and liked the old stock! However if it changes the current rate of delivery for the better superb! I’m waiting for some now and its been an age!!!
Fee Dickson
Soooo glad about the white edges all the way round – never liked the fact there was white on two edges before.
Colin Hollywoo...
I hope that the new “paper” greeting cards are printed on sufficiently thick paper(card) stock. Cheap shop bought cards bought here in the UK are often on such thin card stock that, especially in landscape format, they sag when displayed. The RB photo cards were thick enough to remain “solid” when displayed.
RedBubble:
We’ve gone for a solid stock.
Chris Jackson
Hoodies!!! I cant wait :o)
Morag Bates
I do think it is better, but long for the day that you might introduce a square card also.
Robyn Carter
I loved the quality the photos came out on the old cards. (as photography). What are the differences the paper one will be – same quality?
Robyn Carter
Another question. When you buy in bulk – does this have to be the same image – or can it be a mixture of images? I would love to buy packs of 10, but with 10 different images rathe rthan the same one.
RedBubble:
It can be a mixture of images – but the size and finish will need to be maintained (as they’re all printed together in one batch).
Rosetta Jallow
I prefer the way they were and that white edge is going to take a bit of getting used to….to me personally.
LouJay
I like the sound of this! Looking forward to seeing the new cards..
Heather Walle...
outstanding and cant wait for the postcards and hoodies…way to go moving on up
Sandra Harris
I haven’t ordered any cards yet so can’t say about quality. I would also appreciate a square format size as most of my work is such. I would suggest to members that perhaps a white vignette around your image would go a long way to soften the edges and produce a designer look.
Richard Horsfield
Looks and sounds good, cant wait for the hoodies… good work Redbubble!
Silvia Ganora
Sounds really good! Well done RB!
MoGeoPhoto
much, much better
Soxy Fleming
I think this is good news. I know that I sell cards in galleries but they are considered expensive and I don’t end up making much out of it. I look forward to seeing how these new cards turn out….I trust that RB is trying to do the best thing by all of us. The cost reduction on a mixed batch is an excellent thing…I can’t wait!!
Josie Jackson
Great news, but I also like my work on black background , thanks for all your hard work

Excellent work guys!

Since I nearly always produce images “out of ratio” I’m pleased that a border will be on all sides, but there seems to be a lot of support for black and for the ability to print inside. I hope these issues will be given some priority in development.

Only a white backround? And no possibility of no backround at all? :-(((
SeeOneSoul
OMG this is so exciting !!! Loving it … absolutely loving it!
Glad also to hear that we’re green conscious and looking to go local to reduce carbon footprint – I find this particularly important … I’m delighted about the paper cards and I know for sure there’ll be big orders coming through :))
Wooohooo !!! :))
Exciting times indeed!
Thank You !

Great news guys, well done!

I had a second look at the cards. Being a four thirds user, I’m even more disapointed. To my eye, the version with the white border all around looks terrible. The version with the white edges just doesn’t look good.
Although I applaude your idea, I cannot see myself trying selling a product, with my name on it, that looks that bad. Sorry. To me, a very large miss.
According to what I’ve been reading, 94% of cameras sold have a 4:3 aspect ratio – you plan to provide a service to the remaining 6% and ignore the rest.
Just doesn’t make sense, to me.
Carla Wick/Jan...
Yayyyy BULK cards! Will be nice to know these won’t curl up also…….
Postcards, Postcards, Postcards, Postcards…………hint hint?
Jing3011
Great.
SherbrookePhoto
Thanks for sticking to inches: newspeak on photo sizes is like chalk-screech on black-board.
I guess I’ll get used to USD pricing, that’s ummm okay.
On white borders: I looked at a lot of commercial cards in stores today – have to say the white border images looked much classier than the full bleed, more of a designed look.
On square format: bring it on, always loved square format. Hassalblad rules!!
GEORGE SANDERSON
Sounds good to me, and the volume discount will be much more appealing !
Sybille Sterk
That’s brilliant, specially the white space around the card. It will make a huge difference to some cards with the wrong proportions.
ellismorleyphto
Sounds exciting! See how it looks when it starts… I think it would encourage more people to buy artworks as it is so much cheaper.
That said I did love the photo card that I received from my uncle before and would like that to be still there as a “simple” option rather than the special order thing, but hey whatever works best… :-D
Lynsye Medalia
How exciting! Oh, I can’t wait!!
Maria Dryfhout
The white framing of the new look cheapens the card. A full image is so much richer looking.
Sorry that you are changing the card appearance. Not good……..
RedBubble:
Most cards will print full bleed. Another option would have been to crop the image when the aspect ratio was not 2:3 – which we don’t like doing. Or to leave a border on just two sides … which has never sat entirely comfortably with us because it looks a bit like a production error rather than a deliberate border.
OscarEA
I agree. Not a fan of the white area.
linsads
think its sounds a great idea!! well done you guys :o))
pahit
Like the “before” much more than the “after”.
Naia
NEW cards? great stuff, personally I prefer the “feel” of the calendars to the old cards, and the cropping/resizing of composed images discouraged me from purchasing cards.
the border idea is sure to be a winner as virtually everything looks better “framed” it does not “cheapen” the card, in fact you are ultimately getting better resolution and something that doesn’t look like it came in a pack of 50 from Kmart.
Volume discount – ABOUT TIME! (when it is cheaper to print them yourself where is the incentive to buy??)
Volume discount is MOST sensible
AnaCBStudio
It looks great for me…Thanks
Maria…I think the borders is for images that doesn’t have a 2:3 aspect ratio…I think your work will not have borders…
I think the card will look much better with the white space around the entire image for customized sizes or standard sizes (for example 8×10 or 11×14).
Please RB…correct me if I am wrong.
AnaCBStudio
opsss…sorry…I meant: I think the borders are for image…..
Tracy Duckett
Sounds great! I much prefer the white around the whole image rather than just down the sides and I think postcards will be fantastic addition. Localising production is a good too :)
Seth Weaver
You guys do an AWESOME job! Thanks for keeping the quality up!
Tammera
GREAT!!!….
MUCH BETTER LOOK WITH EDGES ALL ROUND ON IMAGES THAT DONT FIT ASPECT RATIO…SOME OF MY PREVIOUS CARD ORDERS LOOKED LIKE THEY FIT WHEN PURCHASING …BUT SOME WORKS AND IMAGE GOT CUT…OR LOST IN THE FOLD…
THANX EVER SO FOR THE CHANGE…
AS SOMETIMES MY ART DOES NOT FIT THE CAMERA ASPECT RATIO…;)
karolina
volume breaks! woohoo!!! that’s awesome news.
and i’m sure the quality will still be great :)
LeviMoore
You guys are on fire. This is some awesome news.
Bernadette Watts
Really like that the cards are being offered in two sizes and the price break is more reasonable and competitive. Also looking forward to the postcards! Thank you for the update. (Is there anything printed on the back or is it blank? Hopefully blank.) Thanks RedBubble for all that you do to support and help all of us to be successful and look good online and in print.
Seamus Kristöfer
i am in agreement with those who suggested square format. i got all excited because i thought the news was going to tell me that square format was being introduced.
DoreenPhillips
Sounds Great ………But I would change the wording of Photo Greeting Card to either just Photo Card or Art Card …..It would be less confusion when dealing with 2 types….and I think most people would get the difference………….I cannot see any pricing at the moment……bad connection from my server!!……I will come back later…………..Can’t wait for the Hoodies, the shops/garages in the UK hate Hoodies and you are not allowed to wear them up when inside shops, gangs n all that….LOL…….I want mine now…….hahaha……….xxx
Hannah Fenton-...
Thanks for responding, im looking forward to seeing the paper cards, and the pricing is great hopefully it will give us more sells. Thanks for being such a great company! (:
Jenny Hall
I’m disappointed by this news as I was disappointed with my calendar this year. Calendars used to be printed on the beautiful photo stock and made a really nice gift. Now they are on the same stock as any High Street-bought calendar. This will be the same for the cards – just when my friends were getting excited about ordering some too. I will have to warn them that the quality won’t be nearly as good. I have been with RB almost from the start and now I really feel RB is selling out to mass consumerism. Sorry – not happy about this at all.
RedBubble:
Hmm … calendars were never printed on photo stock … they’ve always been printed on paper. The paper, printing and binding we use are generally better than the high street equivalents – but people often compare RedBubble products with what they’re used to paying in a high street store – so we have tried to position the products in that rough price bracket.
robmac
Great way to go and the prices are great too
Lydia Marano
A most excellent decision but I’d prefer a square format card! Still, I’m looking forward to seeing the new product..
Britta Döll
Amazing changes! I am looking forward to seeing all the new products. I am so happy that I found this community, it is such a great place. :)
whisperjo
I welcome the new card version. I have a question, (maybe already asked but I cannot read all posted) does this mean all old stock posted are conversed into the new printing? If so I would welcome that! Thanks for doing a great job! __
RedBubble:
All the old stock will be converted.
BYRON
Can you clarify the bulk order details…
Does this mean if I buy 24 “6×4 cards” in total, in the one order, but they are all different cards/images, then I get them at $1.20 each?
RedBubble:
Correct. If they’re all the same finish and size – then the bulk pricing applies – and they can be of 24 different images.
Lenora Brown
I like that you can get the cards in bulk at a good price. I like the white border as well. Can you do the same for any other colors to coordinate with the cards?
rebelgirl
sounds great to me, it’s going be interseting how they look with all white edges.
Karin Taylor
Hi Peter, sounds great re tiered prices however I prefer the 2 white sides
or a weighted bottom as proportionally it for me, looks more balanced with the white area below slightly larger than the top.
Karin Taylor
Actually on 2nd thought .. If there is a border on 4 sides I feel itwould look right only if it were more on all sides … At least top and both sides, however that leaves little space for the image itself… So just in my own thinking the best option would be to stick with the two sides rather than 4 sides … The thinness of the top and bottom somehow distracts and detracts from the image, but only in my opinion, thx for all your efforts :)
Karin Taylor
I meant more ‘even’ or ‘equal’ measurements on all 4 white sides
RedBubble:
Looking at them in person makes all the difference. So I’ll be very interested to receive feedback on the prototype cards. We’ll look to send out a few test images next week to some ‘testers’ (before we make the cards public). Are you interested is seeing the prototypes?

GREAT can’t wait to see the final details.
Julia Harwood
Sounds good. kids tees would be awesome tooo!!!!
BohemianArtCafe
This is very exciting news. And exactly what I was looking for as opposed to purchasing a single photo greeting card at a higher individual price. Awesome.
Julie Sherlock
Wonderful news!! Bulk prices are very attractive. One question, will we be able to ‘see’ what our card will look like by following the copy properties & pasting into description box as we do at present which then gives an illustration of how the card will look on public view?
RedBubble:
Yes.
Linda Bianic
Awesome!!! lovin’ the entire new product line!!
Karin Taylor
Hi Peter – yes definitely would be interested in viewing prototypes.
I know seeing in person can make all the difference. Just tgat my eye was drawn first to the white frame, and I had learned from framers that when that’s the case .. The frame is taking the limelight and needs to be subdued in order for the art to be supreme… So that was my thinking really … However it may not make all that much difference in person as you say :)
RedBubble:
I’ll see what we can do.
Bluesrose
The same question again: is there any chance to get cards in square format?
Almost all my works are in square format and they don’t look good in the other format card.
Thank you.
Linda Callaghan
great!
Pamela Jayne S...
Brilliant – looking forward to the postcards as well – that should be really interesting – what next at RB HQ me wonders :)) Thank you :D
Marjolein Katsma
Oh, that’s much, much better! I never liked the half-borders around a photo that wasn’t quite the “right” proportion. Especially for square/squarish photos this is a BIG improvement – just what I was hoping for, in fact! I also like the volume discounts and envelopes to go with them: I think it will make the cards much more attractive for prospective buyers!
Coloursofnature
Fantastic idea, love the pricing too, could we have access to bumber stickers, this could promote RB, you know the traditional ‘I love Red Bubble’ for starters, that would be great too, thanks for all your efforts, cheers Valerie xx
Erin Guest
Sorry maties, but this sucks. Very few of my images are standard ratios so this will affect me in a big way once I start selling my stuff. I also hate the idea of no choice but a white background. Most pictures look much better surrounded by black if the image ends up with a border. I am not sure about the quality of the print either. Is the paper used a gloss or semi-gloss stock? Will it look and feel as nice as the original cards (which I have seen)? I would honestly love to see a prototype of the cards and I would really like black backgrounds to be an option.
RedBubble:
We’re trying to keep the number of options down to the barest minimum. For most customers this will be a $2 to $3 purchase … and folks don’t want to have to spend a large amount of time thinking about, and configuring, a $3 purchase. I think what we’ll end up doing is providing many more options for those folks who want to buy in large volume (i.e. 25 or more cards). But we’ll have to see how the new cards are received before we invest in building more options for the large orders.
D. D.AMO
WOW! “Changes” ! Fantab!
Lesley Williamson
Great news, i’m interested to see what they look like and what the finish will be!
I was just wondering…. I have a few images that are square format. I’m more than happy for the image to appear with a white border, but will it be possible to change the orientation of the card if the image doesn’t fit the 2:3 ratio? It would be nice to have a square image on a portrait style card.
Cheers :)
SherbrookePhoto
Wouldn’t you just rotate the image Lesley? A greeting card can open sideways or topside-ways. I think. So long as the greeting/message inside matches the alignment of the cover image.
Re greetings some people have been asking when: until “then”, another good solution is a scrapbooking Xyron sticker creator. It lays its own fine adhesive backing onto anything, so you can hand-write a greeting on fine quality paper, linen, anything – or print it from computer-generated onto a good vellum or whatever. Makes the finished card a little more expensive but more personalised (and saleable).
I’d also love to see the prototypes when they are ready.
AngiandSilas
great news, though the chosen format is kind of a monkeywrench. we are professionals in the greeting card industry and the standard there is 5×7. most likely we will not be able to afford the time to adjust our images to redbubble’s odd sizes.
RedBubble:
RedBubble is using the ‘standard’ size – in so far as we’re using the same aspect ratio as most digital SLR cameras. The 5×7 aspect ratio designs will still work on these greeting cards – they may just have a ‘frame’ around them.
Vanessa Barklay
I will miss the black background. :o(
Lois Bryan
Lets PLEASE have more conversation about the CMYK printing?? I’ve had a heck of a time with the way any of my darker images print here … am I finally getting some insight into why? I do everything in RGB-sRGB, as I thought we were supposed to be doing. Please, please, please clarify!!!! I’d SO love to see my darker RB images print out the way I see them on my computer (and yes, I have re configured my monitor, etc. … please don’t go there). thank you.
RedBubble:
The cards will now print in the same way as the calendars. Were you dark problems with calendars or prints?
Vanessa Barklay
Will they still have our name and the name of the artwork on the back?
RedBubble:
Yes.
Vickie Emms
I have a card order waiting in my cart will they be the new design?
RedBubble:
The card will be printed using the old process.
Ritchard Rodri...
Not sure I understand “paper greeting cards” alongside “printed on thick card stock”. A bit confusing.
Also, although the two sizes might be useful to some, I’d prefer having the option of selecting “white space around the entire image” versus none, albeit, the omission of the “white space” cause images to get cropped way beyond a bleed crop.
Finally, it seems we don’t have control over the card’s orientation, horizontal/vertical. My images were rotated beyond my control.
SandraRos
I looks brilliant and first off I would like to say THANK YOU ! Are we still going to have the option for a black background ?
F.A. Moore
Orientation “radio buttons” for Horizontal and Vertical seems like a good idea, if you can accommodate it.
Otherwise, and in the meantime, I suppose a solution for us, individually, would be to load 2 versions of the image, for instance a square image. One version would be for prints and canvas. The 2nd version, just for cards, we could load so that it looks ROTATED to the RIGHT.
Then the “landscape card”, would instead become a “portrait card”, with more white on the top and bottom (rather than left and right). Guess the main bug in that idea is that the title and author would still be printed, as if the card was meant for landscape mode (or whatever the default mode might be for those dimensions). The second bugaboo, in this concept, is that RB’s official card image would still be in the default mode for those dimensions (i.e. landscape), so it would be hard to sell the card that way, as we intended it to be rotated right, for the card, when held in the hand. Hmmm, the more I think about it, the better to scrap that “work around”, I just proposed. LOL. Oh well, my vote remains for the orientation choice. :))
You all are doing an astounding job. All this is for the good, I have faith.
RedBubble:
Our preference is to keep things simple for the moment – and let the software detect which orientation to display the image. This seems to have worked in the past – but I’ll keep an open mind on this.
Tony Walker
Can you tell us the weight of the new card stock ( eg is it heavier than 350gsm?)
Thanks
RedBubble:
The weight of the stock is only part of the ‘equation’ stiffness is also important. The stock is about 280 gsm and is very stiff. We actually looked at thicker stock and thought that it was too thick.
Jeremy Wallace
much better i think
WendyJC
I’n very interested to compare the cards …
i like that my images fill the card and am unsure of having the white around!
happy that we can order them in the old format :o)
revad
Cards, postcards or any product should really be dealt with separately – as with clothing. Each product has its own special requirements and these are always likely to conflict with the standard requirements of art prints – whatever the media.
Having said that, I think the letter box arrangement is a good way to deal with an image that would be heavily cropped (maybe it should be a tick box option for manual selection), printed cards rather than photo cards are good (depending on the actual quality), and postcards are very good (can I assume they will be laminated?).
I agree with the suggestion that orientation should be manually selectable. Please carry on making a best guess, but please let us override it.
Last, but not least, it is good to see the bubble growing new product again. Good luck with the new additions.
revad
When I say ‘manual selection’, I mean manual selection by the selling artist, not by the buyer.
Taniakay
Good Work Guys… My customers are also interested in kids and baby clothes, mugs etc… There is a website Zazzle who does all these… Looking forward to the new products.. I also have many customers asking for manchester items, downers, pillow cases etc.. Any ideas???
monica palermo
Very good idea!
StacyLee
The price is right! Good job RB! I’m sure the cards will look fabulous in person. Change is good!
Aartistic
hi!
not sure i like the changes in paper, i guess i will have to order something to compare
What i don’t like is this:
when i order a greeting card and Each Greeting Card Quantity of 1 says my price is
US$3.32 …. yet when i add it to my Shopping Cart One Cent 1c gets added to my total and all of a sudden the cost for that 1 Greeting Card automatically becomes US$3.33
for every greeting card i purchase One Penny is automatically added to my cost
Plus shipping … of course
Why does this happen?
One Cent may not seem like much, but i notice this happens
it’s automated in my shopping cart
RedBubble:
This is just a rounding error and on the next screen I believe this rounding error goes away.
Hannah Fenton-...
Well we have to do anything with our mark-up or will it be the same?
RedBubble:
Nope – it’s all just going to work.
Initially NO
Great to hear you’re localising more!
Beth Bernett
I’m excited about everything except for the 4-way white framing. I agree that it reduces the image too much and still leaves an uneven frame. I hope you reconsider that part. otherwise, great, thanks!
Impressionism
hello dear RedBubble,
re: your statement:
“The reasons for not offering photo greeting cards and paper greeting cards are that we think it would be confusing to have such similar products and the manufacturing process we’re using can’t be localised (we’re in the process of localising all production to reduce our environmental foot print and reduce the delivery time).”
honestly i cannot see what is similar about photo greeting cards and paper greeting cards.
i would think that in these last few years the volume of purchases of photo greeting cards would play. i personally will not consider purchasing paper greeting cards until after i have reviewed feedback from those who have. i love the photo greeting cards i have purchased.
the quality and weight, premium! of course i usually always have to pay extra postage when i mail them and send them out to family and friends, but i don’t mind because they are special and not something i would just buy off the rack.
But here’s another thing that concerns me:
your statement, “… and the manufacturing process we’re using can’t be localised (we’re in the process of localising all production to reduce our environmental foot print and reduce the delivery time).”
what does that mean exactly?
i have ordered merchandise from RedBubble, and sometimes it is manufactured and shipped from Australia, and sometimes it is manufactured and shipped from the United States, Iowa, California, I don’t understand exactly what you mean by “localised”
“environmental footprint” and “reduce delivery time”.
may i please ask where you are referring to when you say “localised”,
and what exactly do you mean by “environmental footprint”,
and how do you hope to reduce “delivery time”. from where?
i am sorry to ask so many questions, but i just do not understand
i’m looking forward to hearing back from you.
thank you very much Peter
and RedBubble
K
RedBubble:
what does that mean exactly? It means that we can’t make the photo greeting cards in the US or Europe. They will have to be made in Australia and shipped to the world. The direction we’re moving in is to establish manufacturing in all of our major markets – to reduce shipping times and our environmental footprint.
Cheers.
ChrisArmytage
Can we have a fixed price in Australian Dollars, please? With currency fluctuations, if our price is in US$ we could end up paying more in Australia than we do for the current cards.
Also, please consider those of us who prefer to have black borders around our pics. :-))
Edge-of-dreams
Is the paper coming from old growth forests or sustainable forests?
Impressionism
hi, it’s me again, making a note of the 2:3 ratio
when we edit our work or upload new work after you have made the changes,
will we see it, as our work will appear on the new card?
this will help immensely
currently i am uploaded png files which are about 8-10MG
and even if i was uploading files of a different type or size,
this would help so much for evaluating whether or not i wish to offer my work as a greeting card.
i can see not only by my own thoughts and apprehensions, but also by all the posts from RedBubble Members, there are a number of pros and cons
and issues to be considered.
i lOVE the photographic quality and cards, the original cards.
weren’t they always printed in CMYK?
They are fantastic!! i love them so much i have framed them and keep them forever!
if i just wanted to buy any card, i could go to the hallmark shop or greeting card shop and buy it and have it in my hand when i walk out the door, WITHOUT paying shipping and waiting for delivery! The cards i have purchased from RedBubble are magnificent,
i have shown them to many people, some of them i have given as special gifts wherein i have written my letter to that special someone i have chosen that card to send to.
The paper has never curled or faded, or degraded in any way.
They are beautiful !!
also, many times i have opted for the BLACK background, as the black is the perfect choice and background and really makes the colour POP. Sometimes White is the best background, and sometimes Black is the best background. It really depends on the Painting or the Photograph
sorry if i got a bit loud.
i’m just sayin
i’m not all happy about the changes,
i was completely happy about the Greeting Cards and the Calendars
before, now i don’t know
i have a whole bunch of questions. and i won’t really be able to judge the changes you are making until i actually buy something and hold it in my hand, then i can honestly tell you whether i like it or not.
I’m standing by my first statement that honestly i do not understand what is similar about photo greeting cards and paper greeting cards.
I am willing however to give them a chance :)
RedBubble:
will we see it, as our work will appear on the new card? Yes
The old cards were printed on photo paper – and they’re printed with an RGB technology.
There is no change to the calendars. We’ll see how this change is received – we do listen to the feedback.
Impressionism
Dear Peter,
re: your reply to Karin,
in part “…Are you interested is seeing the prototypes?”
Yes, i am very interested in seeing the prototypes.
although i acknowledge that you did not offer them to me personally,
may i just say i am very interested in seeing prototypes … i usually always select the “black” background
and i love the photo cards i have previously purchased. i’m just saying,
and i think i’ve been saying too much :) i’m not willing at this point to purchase paper greeting cards, and this announcement you have made is definitely affecting my decisions for not only buying mine and other artists’ works, but also offer the purchase of a greeting card as a reward for the first place winner of one of my group’s challenges (which i do from time to time)
that is a gift to the winner
and not necessarily (in all honesty) something i would buy under normal circumstances.
and please note my earlier post regarding the price increase once i have added a work to my shopping cart (no matter how insignificant, a penny saved is a penny earned)
thank you for hearing me out, i’ll shut up now LOL :)
Wendy McNally
Good ideas!
Pania Molloy
All good news guys……..any thoughts on smaller calendars? sorry if you’ve already been asked this…… environmental foot print hmmmm nice touch ’)
Gili Orr
Glad to hear this news! I was hoping for this move for quite a while, since cards should be cheap enough to buy for simple daily uses, and though I haven’t calculated the difference yet, I guess it will make cards cheaper. As for the framing – I mostly prefer black to white. I would love to have a choice, like we have with prints. The photo cards are super quality, but don’t really close (actually- stay closed) that well, because of the thickness of the paper.
Gili Orr
Reading some comments and thinking again – I realize most photos coming out of my camera would look like the example above, since the ratio of the pixels is 3648×2736 = 4:3. Why not have this regular ratio as an option, at least? This is the ratio of all the cameras I have used so far, though I have cropped many of my works to adjust to your 6:8 or close to it.
Rosemary Conroy
Will you add a credit on the back? I would order lots of card through you if it included my name and contact info on the back of the card! They have been beautiful otherwise but not worth the trouble for me to have to add that info before sending out… Thanks for all your great work on our behalf…
RedBubble:
Yep – your credit will still be there.

Like the idea of postcards
Alexey Yarygin
It could be really great for the artists & art lovers! Wish SUCCESS to it!!!:)
Wendy J. St. C...
On second thought (isn’t there always a second thought?) the 5×7.5 inch size won’t fit in my standard 5×7 card racks. Not the horizontal versions, anyway. For me that’s the only negative issue of this change.
Also, for those asking for square cards, they might look great, but the USPS considers them ‘odd-sized’ and adds a surcharge to mail them. That’s why they’re usually reserved for specialty mailing — invitations, announcements, etc.
When I offer square cards, which I sometimes hand make, I include a notice warning my buyers of the increased mailing costs. Saves them from having a card returned to them by the Post Office.
I’m not sure if non-U.S. postal services do the same.
MrBubble
ImageKind, FineArtAmerica, Zazzle, etc. have been offering greeting cards for years at better price points. RB is way behind on this one.
RedBubble:
Historically our greeting card product has been completely different to these ones … even our new greeting card is higher quality (printed with a higher quality process). So one has to be careful to compare apples to apples.

postcards is a GOOD idea.
BubbleTray
Good idea. It would be nice if you offered a box of cards as well. Oftentimes, people like to have a box of generic cards on hand to use for any occasion.
RedBubble:
Good idea – and it’s on the longer term road map.
chibiphoto
Most of my photos are composed in 4×3 ratio so I will have to evaluate each one to see if a 3×2 ratio is possible and if it is worth it to load a separate 3×2 version just for these cards. Anything less than full bleed kinda defeats the purpose of selling photos.
On the other hand, if we could specify images for both the inside and outside like I can on other sites, maybe I would design cards featuring my photos specifically for RedBubble.
EmberFairbairn...
that is such great news, i’ll definately be putting in more than a few orders i should think!
dreamNwish
I’m so confused.
Is it that we will no longer be able to sell photos on greeting cards anymore, or that the sizing and/or format for those cards are changing? I have several photos that I’d like to use on cards. I’m just now getting interested in digital art, so I could use some of those designs I guess, but I’m a better at photography.
I have an account at another site where I sell various POD items, and I’m glad to know that RB will sooner offer postcards and hoodies. I have a feeling the prices over here will be pretty good, too, as always. :-)
I’d appreciate an answer about the photos on cards. I just don’t know a lot about all the technical issues that some of the members are talking about, so I’ve gotten a bit lost.
If you must laugh at me, please do so quietly. [smile]
Thank you.
RedBubble:
You’ll still be able to sell your photo on greeting cards.
Julie Sherlock
When will the new cards etc be available? When it does change, will it automatically change on our site on the cards that are already selected to be sold?
RedBubble:
The change will happen today – and it will all happen automatically so that your cards are still available for sale.

good – makes a better bit of sense -thanx

This is great news! I will order more to send out now.
tambatoys
One thing that always annoyed me about the cards is they looked good but curled/warped very quickly so they did not stand up or if they on the wall curled after a short while compared to cards that were on my wall for years! I hope this will improve with the new cards.
Well that’s my 2 cents :)
armadillozenith
Well done on moves to reduce environmental footprint.. that matters to me too.
White edges all round sounds good.
I had a comment in recent weeks from a purchaser who was pleased at the thick (not flimsy) card their greeetings-card order was printed on. More substantial than most cards.
i noted too that the image on card can look a bit darker than on screen here, I may keep that in mind in future when adjusting brightness, contrast, saturation, lightness etc.of images.
yayy! Postcards on their way! I’m glad! have asked for that myself, so, Cheers!
Thanks for the update.
Jennifer L. Moore
Nice! Can’t WAIT for the post cards. They make great promotional tools!
These new cards look so much better, and with the lower prices, I may be able to economically justify offering cards here again. (The printed photo cards here were more expensive for the customer than the hand-mounted ones I offer through my own shop!)
WTG, RB!
EarthLover
Environmental footprint ? Where are you getting your card stock from? Is it from ancient forests.
Andee Pollard
undecided about the border around the entire image.. some images suit it, some would suit the older style better :/
can’t wait for the postcards….
monocotylidono
LOL – I was wondering why the bulk cut-off points are in the dozens rather than 10s, but then I read your response “…the photographic industry is still imperial”. :-) For those of us that grew up in the rest of the non-Brit-heritage world (small places, like… the rest of Europe!) with print sizes of 13×18, 20×25, 30×40 etc, it still takes a while to adjust to 5×7″, 8×10″, 8×12″…
RB is a big place guys, don’t get too parochial ;-)
mariamagdalena
Thanks for taking such good care of everything. Looks great the new cards :)
Maybe you should come over and rule The Netherlands ;)

Size does matter!
Just wondering why RedBubble has chosen a non-standard card size 5″ × 7.5″. I too work in retail greeting card sales and the most common size is 5″ × 7″, maybe a tiny bit less for some with trim. Our card racks are designed to hold that size. Bigger isn’t necessarily always better!
Also, I think it’s rreally important for the artist (not customer) to be able to choose orientation for those non-bleed sized images.
And an earlier question about image title and artist name being printed somewhere on the card wasn’t answered.
Does the image title and artist name get printed somewhere? If yes, is it the user name or real name?

One more question about quantities.
I understand that if I buy 12 or more of one of my own cards, or one each of several images adding to 12 in total (or any combination that equals 12), they will be at that discount price if they are same size/same finish.
Just want to clarify –
- the prices listed above are the prices to us the artist of the image, and not us the general buyer.
- the bulk purchase prices above DON’T apply if I buy say, 12 cards, from 12 different artists, even if the cards are same size/same finish.
Is this a correct interpretation?
RedBubble:
Yep – the prices listed above are the prices to the artist. You put your mark up on top of this. The bulk prices DO apply if you buy 12 cards from 12 different artists.
RedBubble:
5×7 will necessitate the cropping of most images – we think the art is the most important thing so we’ve made a decision in favour of the art (which is 5 × 7.5).

This really does look fantastic! I applaud the changes!

Just one question Peter, if the printer is printing in CMYK, do you think it’s necessary for us to create in RGB and then convert to CMYK and save, rather than saving as RGB? Like we do for the tshirts? cheers, karin :)
RedBubble:
Hi Karin – I think it’s fine to keep using RGB.

I think K.Bock had some good points. The old cards are really excellent and I have a collection of them because I like them so much. The RB example card is a really bad example – it has been a square artwork to start with which never really look great on rectangle cards at the best of times if you ask me. Unless you can match a black or white background to it perfectly. The picture is lovely but would look better off if it wasn’t a card at all imo. It simply looks like a very small picture unsuited for the card size popped into the middle. I think it borders on cheap and nasty looking. There are a tonne of websites anyone can join in a second to order a whole bunch of cheap plain white paper cards with your image printed on it but only one site like Red Bubble that used to offer the quality photo paper cards in black OR white that were treasured by many of us, collected up, framed and bought. To lose the option of black is very sad.
Also I guess we lost the photo printed look of photo paper for just a flat image printed on the paper card, great we can buy up heaps for cheap but sometimes quality is much nicer over quantity…

Sorry, me again. Sorry also to take up so much room and I’m not flogging my work because I think this looks bloody awful…

This is my own work and to me this is now unsaleable, without the picture going to both sides and me being able to place black on it, I would now take this artwork off as a card. Much of my fractal and stockart work is set up like this so for me this whole card change is not at all satisfying, sorry.

I like bulk, I love discounts and I applaud you guys for changing things in our favour.

This is just a rounding error and on the next screen I believe this rounding error goes away.
thanks for your reply. actually it does not go away. for each card i purchase at $3.32, at checkout the cost is $3.33, so if i purchase 3 cards at $3.32 the cost (less shipping) is $9.99 instead of $9.96

I also just realised that all my cards that have fuzzy borders or borders now don’t go to the sides of the white card, this used to fit perfectly so it had a 1/2cm white border.

I am very sad about this, the cards look awful. That’s the end of my card-making days on Red Bubble. I’d wan’t to save a couple of dollars on them…shame, just like everything else these days, cheap, bulk, sell more, no thought to quality, black ink costs too much… just how can we make them cheaper? :o(
RedBubble:
Hang on, the reason for the change is so that we don’t crop your image – it’s not related to cost. It costs the same to crop as not cropping. Anyway – given the feedback we’re reviewing our thinking on this.

Ay, i do agree with you Vanessa….!:(
Vanessa Barklay
This is what Red Bubble said up further:
Only a white background – this keeps the printing cost down as black requires a lot of extra ink.
Glad to see you are reviewing it.
Thanks kappisan, glad to hear that.

To prevent the chopping of images on cards maybe they should be created better. Like a T-shirt template but a card template, so only pictures that fit a card can be a card, a proper created card instead of just sticking any picture on the cards. Some people go to an awful lot of trouble making a card right, check out the card groups – it could be a separate make – just like T-shirts.

Thank you for the answer, Redbubble!

Im really not happy with the new cards. My customers, at opening always comment on the quality and affordability of the cards, as an image to mount and frame. As an artist, the sales from my cards usually help with the expensive exhibition costs I also buy them for my portfolio to show my work to galleries and agents.Unfortunately, I wont buying the new look cards as I dont think they look professional .

Just received some of the new cards I had ordered and want to let you know how happy I am with them. They are excellent, loved the size & loved the finish & loved the special qty price.

I must say a HUGE THANK YOU for placing the whole image on the front of the card rather than that tacky little picture in the centre of the white card like they looked a week ago, I thought I was seeing things! I just sold a card and when I looked the image covered the whole card, yeah!! That was my main issue (I guess I can live without black) so a big yeehah and thanks from me for placing the image over the whole card front!!!! :O) :O) :O)
Corrie Ancone ...
they are beautiful!!!!

Great!
Thanks a lot, Peter :-)

I know I’m way late commenting but I would love the photo card option. I like being able to choose cheaper quality but I don’t get nearly the same reaction to the paper ones, so at times, I’d like to be able to choose, esp since RB is an artist sight. I do understand how hard it is to earn a living though-for most people paper is fine, I’m sure. eg I LOVE the postcard option
