Product Review: The Canvas Print

This week we’re sharing information about our products, for those who are new to RedBubble and as a refresher for bubblers who’ve been with us for a little longer. Today we’re putting canvas prints under the microscope.

Robots Rights by sjem, Typical Tassie Scenery by Martin Pot and Blue Bird by Narelle Craven.

Quality is important to us. We think your art should be presented at it’s best so we put a great deal of thought and planning into the materials we use and the way we print and produce your artworks.

The nitty gritty:
  1. Made from fine art canvas using Giclée Printing
  2. Mounted on high quality, sustainably grown hardwood for a sturdy frame
  3. Water based clear lacquer applied as a UV barrier and to protect from scuffing
  4. Easy to clean and fade proof

Thank you very much for all of your hard work and professionalism. I’m so happy to see my work on a beautiful canvas. It makes all of those hours photographing worth it!Heather Totoricaguena

Wow! Was I impressed with the results! Everything about the product says quality – really pleased :)Matt Simner

Thrilled with the canvas that was just delivered. Super-impressive quality.Paul Ryan

Hello again smart person, it’s seems you’ve figured out there’s been some great deals on the bottom of these reviews eh? We don’t like to disappoint, so how’s this sound: Buy any canvas print between now and midnight next Wednesday (18th Nov), email Mr. Baxter your order number using the subject line “Canvas are cool” and he’ll promptly (or just when he’s finished his morning tea) send you back a RedBubble gift voucher for 25% the value of that canvas. Is there any end to the extent of this dashing British man’s generosity?

I also love my canvas prints. They look fantastic on the wall and I have had great feedback from those that have purchased my images as canvas prints. My only comment would be I think they would look better, if the image allows, for the image to wrap right over the edges, rather than having the white strip around the edges. Yes, you may lose some of the image but if you are advised of this in the specififcations, you could accommodate for it. I believe the overall result would be better. Just an idea. Is this possible?

You tell me about the discount after I have just had 3 done at my local printer/framer?! (I agree with Felicity – one of the reasons I went local was because he wraps – I find that large white strip a bit offputting and very obvious, esp when hung on a coloured wall – or probably even more suss when hung on a wall that is not the same shade of white).

A question I have been meaning to ask about all red bubble printing ….
Does the print process retain whatever RGB profile you have attached to your file?
    I certainly hope so.

So, the canvas print is actually more of a flat surface? I had been wondering how photographs would look on the canvas print option, thinking that the photo would take on the quality of actual canvas (textured). From what it looks like here, there is no texture on the surface of the canvas print. Is there? As always, great work!

  • RedBubble replied 24 days ago

Hi riverotter. (This is Nat) ... The canvas is flat but there’s a very fine grain. my photography isn’t the best but this should give you an idea of the surface if you look at it very close up.

Canvas prints are great .but I agree with others that having the print wrap right around is much better than seeing white edges, that is one of the reasons I have bought locally rather than from RB

Just wanted to say I have really been enjoying these Product reviews, nice work.
I haven’t had any canvas prints done yet, so I might take Mr. Baxter up on his offer, and then use the gift voucher on all the T-Shirts I’m going to get with his offer of free shipping on 3 or more.

I have no doubt that the quality of redbubble canvas print is awesome, just like your other products, but honestly, I have no desire whatsoever to buy a canvas that doesn’t wrap the image all the way around the sides. To me, that’s the whole POINT of a canvas. But that’s just me/my opinion. :)

  • SD Smart

    SD Smart 23 days ago

I agree please make it an option to ‘wrap’ the sides of the canvas. White sides is ugly on a dark print.

While I’m asking … when you print the framed prints, is it on archival paper? I couldn’t find the information anywhere and was asked to do a show much earlier this year in town and was going to order framed prints from redbubble. I didn’t do the show this year due to time constraints and not being able to find this information on the lovely bubble, would have more than readily order framed prints from here to do my show. I have other questions: Are the mats and mounts acid free? Glossy versus matte prints, is that a potential option? What’s the “default,” glossy? Can we deconstruct the frames to sign the mats then reconstruct them with ease? Are the images dry mounted? What’s the set up here? Questions, I have questions, we want to know!!! Perhaps you’ll cover all that in your framed print product review? You rock, which is much better than being a rock, although I like rocks!

  • JimFilmer

    JimFilmer 23 days ago

The quality of the print and frame is excellent. However there will never be “wrap around” edge images while the strange way of folding the corners continue…. you can see these in the pictures above… perhaps akin to a hospital sheet corner … very unsightly (well perhaps not on a hospital bed) and incredibly bulky on the small canvases.
As suggested… I have place my suggestion into the RB “suggestions and feedback” forum.

If you don’t like the white edge round the gallery wrap, what’s wrong with publishing your image within a border of appropriate width and of a color compatible with the rest of your pic? I have done this for gallery wrap prints elsewhere and, carefully chosen, the color can compliment the pic very nicely.

  • Patricia Howitt

    Patricia Howitt 22 days ago

PS – would need to arrange with RB so they know the plain color is actually intended to wrap – maybe something will come of all this discussion.

hi , this whole canvas printing is very interesting , did you know that maybe canvas is a cotton or other natural fiber fabric , but to truly give and show high quality and high resolution , the whole sheet(roll ?) of fabric is actually painted/coated with white paint , because solvent inks used with inkjet printing would not react very well with raw material (“bleeding” or “migration” which is fuzziness of most edges), so it is in fact printed on white background , canvas gives that special look, nothing wrong with that , i like it personally, however i would be thrilled if Redbubble would expand their interest or range towards inkjet transfer printing called sublimation – it is with highest resolution printed mirror image using dye sublimation inks – water based onto transfer paper , then put together with fabric ( in this case polyester only) and heated up to temperature when all reaction starts , – result is stunning image on flexible fabrics , with different texture , satin – glossy like silk , or fluffy like casino table covers , resolution limit is the texture of the fabric , ,, i can go forever on that , , it’s not the point , i’m sure that Redbubble assures highest possible quality , and explanation on how the prints are done is very interesting and useful , i might give it a go and order one, thanks ,

How are people doing those lovely long, thin prints when RB info says image must be 2:3 format? I find it quite difficult to work out all the products available and tech specs for each – if it offered you all available products and specs in your MyBubble like Cafe Press does, it would encourage artists to develop more products instead of just sticking with what they have done in the past.

I have been doing some canvas wrap prints and they have come out very nice. I have found that canvas is very pricey. I did some on art canvas and they came out quit well. It is quit easy to do a complete wrap so there is no wood showing.

I’ve noticed a bunch of responses here about the white edges. I have to agree with them, but only to a point. I’d hate to see an image wrapped about the edges if I didn’t take that wrap into consideration when doing the artwork. I would much rather just see the option for black edges. This would suit my tastes just fine.
