Lensbaby: Embrace the Blur
Lensbaby is offering the chance for RedBubble members to win one of their remarkable Composer lenses. They are offering four lenses for the best images that highlight the creative potential of sharpness contrasted with blur.
We are thrilled to be able to offer the Lensbaby lenses to the RedBubble community. To our mind the power of the images made possible with their lenses (Selective Focus SLR Lenses) mimic how we see. Some things leap clearly into focus while others are diffused. They give the power to the photographer to share their creative viewpoint. The Lensbaby Group on RedBubble shows some of the creative potential of these lenses.
You don’t need to use a Lensbaby lens to enter the challenge. Just demonstrate the creative potential of blur in a photograph. The top three images as chosen by the community will receive a Lensbaby Composer and there will be one curator’s pick as well.
We hope this partnership with Lensbaby will kick off more opportunities for us to offer prizes for the community. So help it to be successful by informing your friends, camera clubs, online communities etc.
Last week we had a look at some of the creative potential of blur in images and described how the Lensbaby system works. Mel Brackstone has also reviewed Lensbaby lenses.

Why are we seeing non lensbaby shots in the entries????
RedBubble replied 24 days ago
David, we are OK with this as a lot of folks take blurry photo’s by other means and want to win a Lensbaby. Those who have a Lensbaby may be able to get a new/second one!
Paul Cons 24 days ago
i’ll give it shot!

As an “Old-Timer” I’d like to let you know that a smear from a small jar of vaseline applied to a neutral lens filter over your lens will do the same job – maybe even with a more unique and creative effect?
shadyuk 24 days ago
The above vaseline suggestion, works well I used on my old 35 mm camera !
carlotta peacock 24 days ago
OOOO, I will have a go, thanks xxxxxxxxxxxxx
thebrightonian 24 days ago
If you do try this then remember that the area you leave untouched will be the hard focus area -the thicker the coat of vaseline applied then the greater the blurring. Also a swirl of the finger to thin the vaseline will generally sharpen the image in that area although there will still be varied effects within that area. Almost like being a painter rather than relying on a consistent mechanical effect?

There’s close to 600 photos submitted in just a couple days! Maybe this would be a good time to try out another voting system (other than viewing/voting on one at a time). Imagine how many pics there will be to go through in another 19 days!

We agree that being able to see blocks and vote in blocks would be a good idea for such a large comp. It is just having the time to build this. The one thing to know though is that everyone who votes starts at a different place so it is not essential (or probably even possible) to vote on all images. Also we have lots of fraud detection in place now (checking IP addresses of votes etc) and for any winning images we are especially careful. But all that said, yes it would be good to be able so see images in blocks.

The other, images so far are wonderful, here goes my first shot (oops, terrible pun) entering into any photography competition. Be gentle

If you have a Nikon D40, D40x, D5000 or any camera that doesn’t have the lens motor built into the camera a 50mm f1.8 lens is great to use to make these type of shots, I ended up doing it for almost two years.

Whoa…......what a cool device that is!
I read this right away when it was posted and spent a day trying:
(1) to find a Lensbaby to “play with” locally (no luck).
(2) to make one by shooting through various items (old glass vases and the like).
(3) to quench my thirst for the effect(s) by shooting through the viewfinder of my old Pentax ME Super.
LOL…had a ton of fun, took some bizarre but interesting shots. And then I whooooooshed around RedBubble and the web, looking at Lensbaby pix and Lensbaby-like pix, too.
I’m smitten.
But it’s taken me a couple of days to understand why. I think it’s because I’ve been so incredibly myopic my entire life. Without my glasses I see the world this way, in VERY tight areas of clarity surrounded by unraveling blurs. Looking at these images is like seeing my way.
Anyway, I really appreciate your posting this info. It opened my eyes in more ways than one.

Sounds fantastic. I just read about these lens for the first time and I am completely sold. Where do I sign in?
robpixaday 13 days ago
OK, so I took a financial leap-of-faith and my Lensbaby (with Optical Kit) arrived yesterday. I’m still checking it out, reading the instructions, fiddling with my camera so I can start taking super pix. It’s SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO exciting!!!!!
Now all I have to do is pay for it…LOL…I’ve earned $53 here in approximately 15 months. The Lensbaby gear cost just shy of $400, so assuming I continue to earn at this pace (which is a huge assumption, I know) I’ll have it paid for in 105 months!
Uh….
...that’s only 8.75 years!
Bwahah!
Seriously, thank you for the info. I’m really happy to have the Lensbaby and I’m going to spend the next week or so getting acquainted with it!
