The Vibe
Hello!
Today we’ve released our first ever ‘community guidelines’. The guidelines have been released to better communicate our thinking on the nature of RedBubble. They provide guidance on the culture we’re fostering and the sort of behaviour that we want to encourage on RedBubble. Here’s the introduction:
People are inherently creative. Deep down, most of us love to come up with new ideas, express who we are, or take a different perspective on the world around us. We see this in children. Remember chalk on the footpath, crayon on the walls, or a painting stuck proudly to the fridge with a magnet. Kids love stories, they love learning about new things, they ask obvious yet somehow overlooked questions.
So why do so many of us lose this spark? Is there something about growing up that leads us to become wary of our creativity? Do we lose the creative ability? Or does it just get buried amidst the responsibilities, worries and priorities of adult life?
Whatever the reason, RedBubble was founded with a burning desire to bring creative expression back to the forefront of our lives. The desire to nurture and encourage creativity permeates RedBubble – including the atmosphere and culture of the community.
We’re firmly of the view that the best way to encourage creative exploration and expression is through positive reinforcement. A supportive and encouraging community can do wonderful things for someone who’s taking their first creative steps after a long hiatus. Or for someone trying out a new technique. Or for someone who’s shy with their work.
RedBubble is also a place to be inspired, meet like minded folks, exchange ideas, learn, make friends and more. But the foundation of the community is it’s supportive and encouraging nature.
And as you start, or continue, on you RedBubble journey please keep this in mind.
Paul, Martin and Peter

The guidelines contain a lot of fine print (including details on the limits we place on behaviour and material). But the above quote provides a good sense of our overarching thinking. You can find the guidelines here
I’d be interested in your feedback on the RedBubble community and culture. What does the community mean to you and how would you describe the culture?
- Peter

Redbubble is the single friendliest website ive ever encountered. If you maintain the culture of friendship, happy competition and helping one another, redbubble will stay on top.

Culture’s are always varied, as is RedBubble. I find Redbubble enlightening, educational at times and a great place to learn and be social at the same time. I host in groups, and it is always a new day, a new thing learned from our members.
I also find myself answering peoples questions about instructions on how to do something.
I love the diverse art on RedBubble and best of all, I travel through other members art and experiences. :))) I’m a happy camper.

I am a user of hope redbubble from Indonesia redbubble can receive in the community by applying it to things that are positive ,....

Great article! The culture and community of RedBubble is like no other.
I not only applaud the concept and community spirit, but am in awe of the amazing creativity and technical genius of all my fellow members. This positive view is bolstered further by the openess and easy going nature of the wonderful folk that so kindly accept my work and provide feedback that inspires more.
Thank you Paul, Martin & Peter.
Cheers,
James

I think the sentiment above reads really well. But I wouldn’t be afraid of sounding stricter and firmer with your zero tolerance for disrespectful and bullish behaviour.

I joined in March 2008. I can’t wait to get on each day. Such a global group. You get to see the world and know the people in the world better. I know it sparks my ceativity.

I love it here, just wish more people around the world knew about us!!!

I would have to say that joining the Redbubble community has been such a wonderfully positive experience!!! I very much appreciate being a member of this community and have found the experience to be very refreshing as well as incredibly inspiring. There is so very much creativity here and the members of this community seem to have a great deal of respect of each other. I would say you have got it right and keep up the great work!!!! :-))))) Thank you!!!

From first thing in the morning until late at night, I keep my eye on the bubble . . . Love this place and the lovely people that show their creativity here . . .

Great work, I hope people will read it, maybe even attach it to the welcome email…
Just query about self promotion; would adding a photo and link of one of your works to another members comments to explain the difference or similarities of such image(s) be considered self promotion? If so would adding a link back from your own work to the members work mitigate this?

I’m on a couple other sites and they’re ok. I even make more money on sales on one of them but, they don’t have the sense of community that RB has, and that’s the main reason that RB is BY FAR my favorite. The friends I’ve made here and the support and encouragement they’ve given me has, at times, been what’s kept me going.
Thanks for being here, RB.

Finally, this is brilliant. it is one of my strong reason to stay here. i was shy at first here to show my work and then i met amazing people who keep on encouraging me. for that i am thankful. redbubble makes me happy!

I joined in 2007 and its been a wonder inspiring journey and has help my grow as an artist and meet some amazingly beautiful people around the world! This community here is so vibrant and alive with their art skills! Thank you very much also for featuring my artwork! ;)

I have been – and still am—a member of other (photography) forums. NONE of them compare to the great free-flowing river of creativity that is the Bubble. Keep on rollin’.

Sometimes the ‘intent’ of an Artist can be difficult to define or assess, and I don’t think a Viewers ‘response’ and behaviour towards a piece of Art should really hold the Artist as being accountable in all instances? Perhaps an example of work outside of redbubble or further clarification may be needed. For example, I certainly didn’t create THIS piece of artwork with the intention of ‘titilating’ people, and from my perspective it portrays, in an abstract form, the passion and energy of lovemaking, however, it could, and even may, under your new guideline, as being perceived as being ‘off-limit’?
#Any work or behaviour where the intent of the artist is to incite hatred, violence or racism is not permitted.
Again as with my first statement, without a clear example or further clarification, the intent of an Artist can be confusing and difficult to guage, particularly where a piece of work is confronting and questioning Systems and Actions in Society, and a viewers response may vary in accordance to their own experiences? For example, I created THIS piece of work to address and questionthe social inequities and practices of different cultures, but certainly not to portray racism, but if a person is sensitive to racism from their own negative experiences, might this effect the way in which they respond to it?
I don’t know, perhaps my art work does over-step the boundaries as to what Redbubble deems as being acceptable? Hence my need for additional clarification of the above rules. :-)
Thanks, and apologies for the lengthy response. :)

I think these grey areas are difficult – and the inclusion of this subjective element may be something that needs to change over time. But my preference is to run with the current version of the guidelines for a month or two to determine how the subjectivity plays out. For the record – I would not consider either image to contravene the guidelines.

Redbubble is my favorite spot on the web to show my work and exchange ideas! Thank you, thank you for all you do to make it so!

I’ve been on RB for over a year now and this is definitely my favorite place to be. For me, RB is many things – a great social networking site from which I’ve made many new friends. Not just on-line, but I’ve been fortunate to meet and shoot with many people locally (Colorado). It’s a great place to not only show, but sell my work. And the inspiration I get from the other highly talented photographers cannot be stated enough. Seeing the great work posted here definitely inspires me to got out and raise the bar in my own work. From my first day here I felt very welcome, and continue to feel that way. I just hope I convey that same sense to others.

I really enjoy the community on Red Bubble and am here way to much. I guess I never read the fine print before; but the current version reads pretty well to me. I do think that the consequences for all blunders should be very clear. It seems like a couple of paragraphs were missing the “consequences” section. It looks very well thought out. Thanks for a great site.
DragonFlyer
I have virtually no experience of any other site, but RB has given me so much… from the opportunity to make friends, to the chance to learn from great and extremely experienced artists and, of course, provided for me an extremely encouraging forum to begin to show, and develop my own art and ‘self’ – to grow into the artist I hope I am…
I truly hope this journey will continue with these guidelines as a workable frame for the future.

Wow, reading this reminds me of how I ended up here. I was in a university program that alternated between school semestres and internships constantly without any summer vacation, hence I lost a lot of valuable time for art. Though the one intership that lasted longer was the time I decided to get back to the artsy side of things and I found RedBubble (I’ve described this in my profile description).
I absolutely love this community in so many ways. Not only do I get to exhibit my work, but I get to meet and become friends with many wonderful people across the globe and I do feel that I am learning so much just by being here! Who needs to pay for outside lessons to improve their skills? Improving by being inspired by the works here is so much more fun and less stressful.

Love your statement and vision..the inner child is the greatest muse…thumbs up & hugs to the team..xo

i totally dig the vibe here… i used to belong to another site …
but the more i played over here, the more i felt like this was where i wanted to be…
and it has been all you described above (it’s so me!)
i’ve sent more than a few messages complimenting RB’s ability to keep the community positive… beyond that… the artists here also embrace that energy:
passionate, inquisitive, provoking, and loving life with childlike abandon
i’m glad i found RB and have grown so much!!
i love this place and all my RB friends…

Okay, thanks, everything else seems straightforward and clear, and I definitely agree that the Community Spirit fostered here, is the most positive I’ve seen and felt by far, in comparison to many other sites I’ve been involved with. Keep up the great work! :)

It is no secret that I love this site – for many reasons. One of those reasons is fun and friendship. In the spirit of fun and friendship I have had exchanges in comments with others which would appear derogatory to some but which are all in fun. Are we still going to be able to enjoy ourselves here in this way?
I am heartily against self promotion (plenty of people write journals asking for votes, even bmail requests….) but I do like to add a friendly link in a comment when it is relevant to the work I am viewing (for instance the work I am commenting on is similar in appearance, theme or content to something of mine or another’s work which I know)....is this going to be considered inappropriate now?
I realise that running a site like this is very difficult. I think rb does a great job. I just still want to have some fun.
Brian Downs
I joined in July and was motivated by the comments that fellow artists left,
finally I have found a vehicle in which the whole world can view my art.
The RB community has changed my life and I find myself taking more images than in the past, I have gained friends and received admiration from fellow artists which has built up my self esteem and given me a reason to get out of bed in the morning.
Though I find RB overwhelmingly saturated with good and bad art, at least people are seeing my art now and caused me to improve my standards. Thanks RB.

Oh, my! I will need to restrain myself a little here, or I will natter on “forever.” I have been here a week and the feeling is
- well, I think “ecstatic!” sums it up? Either that, or I dreamed of the Perfect Photo site, then woke up to find it was real, and I’d joined! I came here from another photo site, where I languished for about 5 years – a term I thought about before I used it here. Won prizes (while they still had those)... got many, many pretty little medals on my page… I did meet a LOT of cool, outstanding friends and that frankly, was the ONLY reason I remained so long. Without writing War and Peace, that experience was very negative and disheartening in the end. Years back, I used to sell my work and publish photo-articles in “real” magazines; I joined that site thinking maybe it would spark my inspiration and I’d get back to all of that. Instead, I have to say it set me back. While I do NOT “blame them” – the fault was purely mine – the fact is,photo contests tend to spawn two groups. Winners vs. Losers! One begins in time to base one’s “value” on those little accolades (or lack thereof) ... or at the very least, the value of one’s work. “No badge today, therefore this must be a lousy photo.” I was very vocal through the years in telling everybody there that this was NOT the case; that judgment when it comes to artwork in particular, is as it must be, a subjective thing in part whether those in question care to admit it or not. And yet, by the end, I found that I too had fallen right into that very trap. The result of that sort of thinking is that over time one descends into an ever-deepening pit of negativity, insecurity and lack of self esteem. I sense NO such negativity, not a whiff, here at RB. There is nothing but encouragement and positivity. This is very evident to me in ALL the comments – all the forums – everything I’ve read. Quite a contrast from the back-biting and complaining at my other site. I do believe, where there’s smoke there’s fire to speak, and when nearly everyone complains (we’re talking thousands!), there is usually cause. Here at Red Bubble- well, I haven’t been this encouraged, this enthused, this INSPIRED, since-?? Hard to say. Art school, I believe, and that was back in pre-Jurassic time (60’s)! In short, if you founded the site “with a burning desire to bring creative expression back to the forefront of our lives,” I would say you’ve CERTAINLY succeeded! Kudos on a job WELL DONE and an AWESOME site! (I’m sure it’s the Best of the Best of the Best!) Only wish I’d come here sooner! ((Don’t change it, please. “What ain’t broken don’t need fixin’!” lol)JoJoCSZ
Since joining RedBubble, not once I have seen anyone “flamed” for their work. And that makes all the difference in the world. I consider this place a sort of quiet retreat, or even a safe haven, where art maintains a feeling of joy for me. Glad to be a part of this community :D
FailingMemory
Have found it very encouraging when people comment on my work. I love looking at other people work, and have broadened my vision of the world through tat experience.

red bubble is an excellent web site for creative people to see other’s work.

I have enjoyed the bubble enormously since joing 1.5 years ago. Continually inspired by viewing the world through others art, growing myself as a photographer and person. I have been fortunate to make many friends on RB and have travelled and met with many people, it is on the whole a thriving community of like minded souls whatever their medium! However, in the past few days I have been ‘flamed’ and singled out by another bubbler. Having sent two emails to you with no response I wonder if you have a timeline to deal with situations such as this?
Faizan Qureshi
The introduction is very well said. Reminds me of my seasons for becoming a member here a couple of years ago.

If there’s another site out there with the warm, welcoming culture of community that Redbubble has I’ve yet to find it. This is a place where artists of all skill levels are nurtured & learning is encouraged, all this being backed by a huge dollop of acceptance & equity.
Sure, there are some who don’t embrace any of these qualities, but these people seem to be in the minority…. as in any culture, no?
I may sound a little cultish here, but RedBubble changed my life, & I’m the better for it.
David Petranker
I am not exactly sure what to say other than feeling a bit miss lead, I can understand the be nice policy well I understand it a little, as an artist I want to hear both negative comments and positive ones its the only way an arist can grow. “The default assumption is that only encouraging and supportive comments should be made on a work”. But I thought this website was where we sell our work, a nice little chit chat here and there cool and a little bit of insiration cool. Also I love how you guys keep us up to date in in what guideliness we have to meet, but can you also keep us up to date on how you are trying to sell our work, i mean at the end of the day a community is nice but it does not make money and as a part share holder along with the other 200,000 people on here we want more sales.
RedBubble replied
David – the most important thing we can say is that you’re the best sales person of your work. We provide a platform and do all the boring back of house work … but the chances are that you already know your buyers.
Princessbren2006
I find that all creative communities develop controversity and bitching etc and redbubble is no different.
David Petranker
I will give you an example of what markets are out there, just a little hint, I work for the government in purchasing/law firm, (you can contact me privatly about this) we and other law firms are looking for companies that can provide art works for there solicitors, we used to get it from one source (almanac of international artworks) however these companies are gone and you can not purchase them anymore so we are stuck with money burning a hole in our pocket. There are heaps of companies out there in this position.
RedBubble replied
Sounds interesting – I’ll BubbleMail you.

This is like a big family – apt to have spats, displays diverse talents & personalities, is hugely stimulating, some members grow in leaps and bounds, others are happy to be home-bodies … and for all the diversity and disagreements that may occur, let someone find him/herself hurting or ill, or let one outsider sling a shot at a fellow bubbler, and we rally with love and support … no wonder we feel ‘at home’ !!!
Yvonne Less
I have joined RedBubble a couple of months ago. I upload my work also on other places but HERE is by far the best place to meet friendly people with the same passion. This global community gives me the feeling to be home. Glad to be a part of it! :)
solena432
Happy to be a part of this community and to share our passion for art!

I’m very happy to be a part of this community and to feel connected to people from all over the world. RB is a wonderful place :-)

I haven’t been on RB for very long…but have found it a wonderful friendly place to be I love coming in here every day and have already made wonderful friends..I have not been painting for long..so am still at the learning stage…but the encouragement i have received here ..is second to none..I am so glad I found you and happy to be here !!!!!!!
KiwiAna
I really love it here at Redbubble. I’m glad you’ve put such great guidelines in place. It’s simple, warm and encouraging… Just like The Bubble really!
richman
ive tried the rest and found REDBUBBLE the BEST!
Zefira
This is so well put in clear detail and I like the intent. But plurality always brings conflict and Utopia is unrealistic so, in the interests of diversity of community and free speech, maybe some guidelines as well on how to handle uninvited criticism wisely before complaining as it can sometimes be a learning point? It could get nauseating from all the gush without a little spice and so only attract a certain type of artist/art.
Also I have wondered if RB promoted itself to a buying market through ways other than the site itself?
traveller
This is my favorite web site, it has enabled me to make friends all over the globe, but even better is the fact that I have now met up with some of these friends and will certainly meet many more as time goes by. A site for world wide friendship, what could be better?

I like being on this site and I appreciate all the donkey work (heavy lifting ) that you guys do to keep it running. I think the say something nice or say nothing policy works well. Thanks and all the best.

I still think this place needs a human sacrifice
Barbara Burkhardt
Oh Danny … what a crack up!
Great sentiment from the RB team. You do a great service, I sometimes wonder if you really know to what extent your influence has had. Thanks for being on the side of The Goodies – they are always the winnders & I’m with you. YEAH!! .
mobii
I noticed that you left out both the “Violators shall be tossed into the pit of doom”, and the “The peasants shall be allowed to storm the castle with torches and pitchforks at any time” clauses. But, ok.
Darren Stones
I nominate Danny for the human sacrifice. But, please make sure he’s wearing clean underpants at the stake.

I showed someone mybubble the other day and they couldn’t believe the amazing sense of community. Keep it up!!

Connecting with like minded people …..............And easy to showcase and sell your art

R. Jason Smith
I just read the entire ‘fine print’ document. It seems inclusive of all the ‘HR’ rules and regulations that should be followed in a world-wide online community of this magnitude, and is presented in a very clear manner.
There is simply no other online artistic community that consistently affects as many artisans, in as many different parts of the world, as RedBubble. I think, sometimes, people may not realize that the success of this community (like that of any other community) depends on each individual member and how all of those members communicate with each other in order to grow, and progress as an overall group. That being said, it is vital to respect each other, and the rules and regulations of the community in general.
I’ve been an active member and group host nearly since this site’s inception and am continuously impressed by the level of dedication the RB staff has in ensuring this site’s success and growth. Thank you all for your hard work… Please know that the global online community that you’ve created is a breeding ground for artistic inspiration to many more people than just it’s list of members… just ask the folks on all of our facebook friends list! ;-)
Karin Taylor
What does the community mean to me?
The community means a great deal to me. I think about it and talk about it on a daily basis, with my family, with my friends outside the bubble. Many members are in my thoughts, even as I go to sleep…I care deeply for the people i know here, and I believe they care deeply for me.
How would I describe the culture?
The culture of RedBubble cultivates fellowship, encouragement, inspiration, creativity, friendship, acceptance, fun, learning and growth. People are generally helpful and kind, willing to lend a hand.
I see it as a place where many kindred spirits meet with like minds….if on a certain day one is away, there always seems to be someone else that is just as kind and helpful. People have shown to cleave together here during times of adversity, which is a sign that this is much more than a website…it’s a heartsite.
Lopine
Yes, I am still looking for my “creative spark”! Thank you Red Bubble founders for this fabulous site, it is indeed a platform for a healthy global community, one can spend many peaceful hours looking at the fabulous artwork. Wondering if you might one day hold a competition and have a Red Bubble exhibition on terra firma and perhaps better still traveling as did the Earth From Above exhibition? I guess it might be impossible because the good news is, there is too much brilliant photography to choose from!

What RedBubble means to me?
Hope, joy, exploration, fascination, opportunity, friendship, humor, education, and community.
Art with a soul.

I was only starting to be an artist when I joined RB. I think I’ve improved because of the encouragement and support. There are more than enough people willing to put you down in life, so I value the positive responses. When I want constructive critiscism, I ask for it from people whose opinion I trust.
Rosie Harriott
RedBubble is so great for positive encouragement… we seem to get enough negative spark-squashing criticism elsewhere and that’s why I love RedBubble. I believe it gives us the ability as artists to feel like our work is worthwhile, which then gives us the ability to become more successful in our art and hopefully achieve our dreams. Thank you for this opportunity RedBubble!

RB is a wonderful place, I wish I could be here more than I can..
I have a question… Is there any possibility to make square cards? (most of my works are in square format :)

Great article!! I am from Brazil and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, REDBUBBLE!!!!!!!!!!
I can’t wait to get on each day!
Thank you to you all for created the RB!!!!!

RB has an excellent philosophy. The new guidelines are a great improvement and a step forward. However, the proof is not how good the words sound, but how well they are administered on a day-to-day basis. So, time will tell. Best wishes for success in implementing this.

Great job guys! RB is my second family. I have formed some very close friendships and support systems through this site. Also I have learned many new techniques with my art and photography and feel as if I have grown in a positive direction as an artist. To top it off the quality of printing here is remarkable. I think over 2 years now I’ve made 7 sales and all buyers were thrilled. Why go anywhere else….this place rocks. xx
simplylovely183
i love redbubble, and like many people here i find it to be a second family. (most) of the people here are very supportive of other people’s artwork and there is an overall good atmosphere here.

Redbubble has guided and lift my spirits so many times I can’t count them. In my book it is an inspiration and a friend ,all here are so supportive and I love it all. Thank you and may you continue for ever.

This is so beautiful. It is like, “Someone finally understands us” Perhaps it is that you three are also artists as well, but have that rare ability or organize and put together a site that has become my very favorite on the entire internet. Red Bubble is the first place I come in the morning as I join you with my freshly brewed coffee. Sometimes I have been known to spend the whole day with you or stayed up with you until the wee hours. I am constantly inspired and encouraged to grow and push my creative boundaries. Really, I just want to say is “Thank you so very much for being the island in the storm. Here we are with so many kindred spirits and enormously gifted individuals. The three of you are my Heros.”
Dusker
I enjoy viewing other’s work and particularly reading the technical data. I feel comfortable bubblemailing people for extra info and have never been refused. I also moderate photography 101 and despite the many who miss putting their information in (group guideline) a quick bubble mail to them explaining why they have been rejected has had great results. This has also led me into getting newbies started a little more into redbubble. I have seen more of Europe by redbubble than I dreamed of and enjoy reading the excellent descriptions. Following photographer’s work via the watch list is great. The culture is great, friendly and helpful; a great opportunity for new people to get a feel of themselves and their work being accepted.

I came across this site by trying to find great art. Im so happy to have found it because i can now dream alonge with evertyone else here. I dont want to sound like a soppy cow, but its a nice place to be when you find others who see things in the same way you do, if not more clearly. Redbubble is deafinaly my little bubble i go into when i need. Thanksx

The diversity of talent, the encouragement and support of so many artists, the excellent way this site is run, all make for a unique and rewarding experience to be a part of RB. Thank you, and please keep up the great work! What a joy! Love, Shar

Finding this wonderful site has created a very much needed expression of my words…..And given me the confidence to say that I am a writer….something I have not been able to do before. It has been through the support of other creative people here on this site that I know have a confidence in my pen… Also the friendships that I have been blessed with stand out as being the most wonderful creation of all. I echo the sentiments of this site being one of support to others….to build up and not tear down is definitely what I read in the desire from the founders of RB .

I joined RB last December, thinking it might be nice to have a few of my photos online. I had no idea back then that I would be hosting groups, selling art, developing and furthering my skills of photography and post production!
I really owe all my creative energy and development to this site. The culture here is such a positive one. I have never received such support and encouragement from a community like this before. It’s one thing having mates tell you that you can produce great art, but when it’s almost anonymously given to you, there’s something very special about that.
This is so much more than an art driven community here to sell work. This place is about helping each other become better artists, sharing knowledge we have to better each other and our artistic endeavours. There is not a hint of competition on here. There is genuine happiness for seeing another artist further themselves. That’s so damn rare in the world today.
I could rant on for pages about how great this site, the community and staff are, but it pretty much speaks for itself. The positivity that comes across is so strong, you just get sucked right into it.
Redbubble is happiness on the internet.

I joined just 3 days ago and must say I was welcomed by one person after leaving an I am new here on the message board. I have also had 2 comments made on my photographs that I have uploaded which I must say did give me that warm glowing feeling inside. Being very new it will take some time to get my feet wet but so far I am loving this site and am glad that I stumbled across it.

I love the introduction! It is sooooooo important for us to remember our inner children, I love that you have pointed this out for the masses. It makes me smile! :)
My experience here on redbubble has been amazing from day one! Everyone is so encouraging….it’s not about being the “best” artist on the site with the most views, features, and favorites….it’s about making friends, and supporting eachother….it’s about encouraging one another to push their own boundaries, to create more and more. I have learned a lot about myself as an artist just from being here on this site. I have watched myself and others grow in their art tremendously!
THANK YOU!

Reading all these comments makes me feel very happy and joyous :)))))
When I joined RB I had no idea of the positive impact it would make on my life
and how it would spark my enthusiasm and passion for creating again. This is
down to the people here for sure and the ethos of the management team.
Thank you for always striving to make things better for us- You are the BEST xx

I have never had a real problem with anyone here and I really love this place, the people and the art, I have no problem following any rule required. We are all blessed to have this wonderful community and it’s exposure…for free! you could NOT buy a better spot! Rock on RB!

I think redbubble is the best website possible for artists. It’s hosted so carefully, and it really had the friendliest, most community-like feeling of any website. It’s not a website you feel you have to be constantly cautious in. I think that all the guidelines make it what it is; youu can’t have a good site without good hosts

i love the feedback on my art…cant wait to actually sell something too…thatd be nice

Sounds like a start, though a lot of policing as well. RE: titillation: there is plenty of artistically titillating work on this site. Just because it is well-photographed, with props, etc., doesn’t counteract the titillation, and I can only forcefully insist people continue to upload these works…. the current policy is probably better stated and more enforceable than “No hardcore, but softcore with artistic flares is cool.”
RE: defamation: there are certainly some people who would insist Bush is a murderer, and can provide links to stats on Iraq, etc, wherever it is that they have a beef. There are less for Obama, as he has been in office less time. These would have been better as examples of villification—very inflammatory claims that you can argue pro and con at a bar, leaving everyone a bit peeved.
I think its quite fair to picture your art in comments when making a comparison, but only when its really germane to the conversation; it would help to have a guide on how to generate the extra-small, small, t-shirt, and preview sizes.
I’ve been on RB for a year and its only been cordial, and a great way to organize work and make it available. The community is strong, but commerce could be nudged with more sales, free shipping periods, etc. Thanks all! – ANKOW

its a fantastic group of people coming together through their art

The new guidelines are very appropriate…
Funny, because they are all plainly common sense!
All things that should have been learned by age five.
Play nice has always been the rule…
What more should have to be said???
Kudos to your way of addressing the issue.

I am with Sam…lol ...meaning I totally agree…well said. RB is my support group as well as my learning and teaching center…the place where I can simply be…me:) I have learned and been inspired by some fantastic men and women and even some young adults with more talent in their little fingers then I have in my whole body! This is a place where age, gender or race isn’t what is held as important but a place of hopes and dreams and ART! Life as it should be…free to just BE!
And I thank you for giving it to us!

I love Redbubble and its community collectively for their mutual Love and Respect to help aspiring artists to share their creative work to help make this World a better place than we inherited. ..Sunilism

Looks excellent to me! I agree with others that the supportive community is a big plus around here, and I certainly agree with your philosophy. In terms of anything that might be changed in the text – did you consider adding “constructive” to the “quick guide” part? Eg, when mentioning that it’s all right to engage in critique if invited, it’s surely pertinent (and helpful guidance) that the debate still has to be constructive. An invitation for critique is not an invitation for attack. It might also be worth adding something about not making personal comments – keep it relevant to the work in hand (or maybe that’s dealt with in the small print already …). Just a thought. But they read very well, and have the benefit of brevity, as well as reminding us all how to get the best out of ourselves when dealing with others … Best wishes!

Red Bubble Well for all the time I have been a member not once have I received a negative comment and no doubt some of my images might deserve one, but the amount of views and comments on each and every one gives you an indication of there value, I have met many friends and new ones almost every week, Iv’e encouraged many people to join or check in , So for me Red Bubble Is the greatest way to show case your local area and talent in doing something that give a person a lot of pleasure,You see so many creative people, art works and photos,of places and nature that you would never see as a norm So to all the staff and my fellow Red Bubbles keep it coming I love you all ::)))

I am one of the very first members to join RB. It is more like a love affair than simply a place to display my artistic talents. It has such a special place in my heart and always will have. There are some absolutely AMAZING examples of the finest human beings on earth right here on the bubble and I will forever be grateful for having the pleasure of knowing them and delighting in their astounding quality artworks. As many people above me have said ,........yes, there are other internet sites that allow expression and sale of art, but none can ever compare to the UNIQUENESS of the worldwide community support and encouragement that all of us passionate artists get from other passionate artists right here on the bubble….............. When you think of the huge numbers of members we have now …....... you must understand that from time to time we will come to blows with ‘regulations, opinions, and rulings etc’ that come from administrators and others in authority….......... however, to their ABSOLUTE CREDIT…...........they listen AND CHANGE things. I think we have something soooooo special that with good ongoing communication and common sense, we will always be able to overcome any bumps and hiccups we have along the way. I LOVE THE BUBBLE. Thank you Paul, Martin and Peter for doing a bloody fine job, considering the enormous responsibility you all have to shoulder…........... xxLinda : )))

I’ve loved RedBubble since the day I joined in January 2008. Since then I’ve stopped by everyday.
I’ve missed a handful of days in that time. I’ve met and become friends with people from all around the world.
One of the best feelings is to receive genuine praise from artists whose work you truly love.
A place to stop by, have a look around and hang out, because it just feels like HOME!! :)

I have put art on this site more days than not since joining a few months ago. I don’t feel like anyone is looking at it though. If they are, they don’t let me know.I have had less than 5 comments in all I think in all of that time. I would appreciate hearing something from somebody sometime. That’s all. Peace and Love to all.

ive never seen any horrid behaviour on this site. Seems all good to me! =)

I absolutely love this site! I am however glad that you all have put up these guidelines, because I have (first hand) seen some of the ways people on here can be crude and hurtful, even if they don’t mean to come off that way. I want to first say thanks so much for doing this! Second, I am so glad that I was introduced to this site by a friend, and I wouldn’t leave it for anything. Thanks for all you guys/gals (admin) do to make this site great!
Danny
@ Pink Canyon, I don’t remember you at all, but if you filled up the writing section with a copy of Webgirls Link data and claimed it as your own for popularity ratings – you probably deserved everything you got.
I would never attack someone because the put writing in the writing section.
Ever. No matter how shitful.
I believe the new upload pages make a mention of not trying to repeat this practice,
Which is a good thing.

oh my friends, that’s good for everyone …

Added to that this online artist colony is more important to the world of art than we all give it credit for. Art is more important to the whole world than any other vocation. Without art we have no creativity, no exploration, no communication, no recording, no culture, no identity, no humanity.
Before RB most artists would dwell & create alone – the creative process is initially an intimate thing and then for many due to lack of self confidence that’s as far as it goes – but here we can be in touch with others without having our real person vulnerable to real attack. From the comfort and protection of our own home we can toss over ideas, get feedback on ideas, and then have the support required to “show” our creations to the world! And from there our confidence grows to actually give us confidence in the real world in all sorts of life needs not just our art.
For many the idea of showing a gallery of their art would be so far fetched they would never aim for it yet in here we each have a gallery and it is wonderful to see people have visited!
For writers to be published (or even photographers but more so writers) is a very VERY hard thing to achieve and yet in here we are read and encouraged and have the chance to one day get our names on the spine of a book! Through my contacts in here I have met a publisher to assist me in becoming a published author and I have introduced him to the bubble and to you Peter (as you know) – with views of him assisting other bubble writers also! In here I have discovered my ability to write stories and poetry that people LIKE and I have learnt to write life commentary and words of counsel to help others. And from here I have entered (& “won”) a competition for novel writers (NaNoWriMo) and found other writers that help me to perfect my wordsmithing. And to think I never thought I could be a professional writer (let alone a poet) cos I coodnt spewl!!
But as much as I have grown in here, over the 20 months I have been a proud and addicted member, I have also had the privilege of assisting others to grow. I have recognised artists who had no belief that their art was anything special when in fact their art is exceptional and I have hosted groups of all sorts of focuses and next week marks the first anniversary of the EEG – Exceptional Ekphrasis where we explore and celebrate art created in our own style to interpret the created art of other inspirational artists
and isn’t that the crux of the bubble?
So to you Peter, Paul & Martin ☼ *B R A V O * ☼
your vision is exceptional your application is world inspirational and your commitment to us is nothing short of divine!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
and with the implementation of these guidelines and all other improvements to this awesome site I wish you all the very best continuous and exponential capabilities!

There is one word that can sum up all that has been said so far..RedBubble is ALIVE...
When I’m here, I feel like I am hearing a buzz, feeling an energy, sensing that vibrant passion that makes up a real live pulsating community…there is no other place like it on the web…

I’ve been on the site for over a year and found it entertaining, enjoyable, educational and friendly. I got discouraged at 1 point as nothing had then sold but luckily a good friend of mine asked me to return and I have been welcomed back and made to feel very comfortable. I got a real high when a few of my pieces were featured in a few different groups, no where else on the web is that possible that i know of . I just met some new people who live in my community too, unbelievable considering RB spans the globe. You have a truly unique site here and I appreciate all the effort and time that go into it. as far as needing bad criticism as well as good, I was taught ,if you can’t say something nice then don’t say anything at all..perhaps when there’s no comment that’s the reason. don’t change a thing !

Quote: So why do so many of us lose this spark? Is there something about growing up that leads us to become wary of our creativity? Do we lose the creative ability? Or does it just get buried amidst the responsibilities, worries and priorities of adult life?
I think it has A LOT to do with school. Beginning with kindergarten. All kids must do the same, e.g. colouring this apple (and try to paint just inside the apple) with red and the pear with green. And if you see in a toys magazine what the “creativity stuff” is… painting by numbers and similar “template creativity”.

I’m new to RB but I like it so far. Also, I realize the running a site like this is going to bring on some massive headaches [hands bulk sized aspirin over] and appreciate it. I left an art site that began making light of artwork, anything scribbled on a lined paper, even a gum wrapper, was accepted. it stopped being about art and began to be more about popularity. I don’t want that and I hope you don’t turn into that. ;)
It’s a growing process and we’ll all learn as we go but you need to acknowledge if something sounded good but after implementation…”oops, our bad” and change it. lol.
As for the journal, everything sounded fine to me. :D
Princessbren2006
hmmm I have to disagree that school squashes our creativity – art is not the only medium for creativeness – writing acting etc. Sure kids make somethings the same but there is always the time in the day were they can be their own creative selves – well it was in my classroom. It’s adulthood and the responsibilities that come with it that quashes creativity at times. I do believe though that its always there lurking and sometimes we let it out.

Thanks Paul, Martin & Peter for creating and nurturing this excellent community.
I applaud your stern line on portrayals of violence and your low tolerance for the rare ‘negative’ traits of the odd few bubblers.
I especially applaud your light touch in other respects, and in particular your positive, relaxed, self-assured “benefit of the doubt to artist” approach to artistic nudity. Please keep the love/hate seesaw tilted firmly this way!
MASC
This is a great community of people and an honest group. Creativity is so important and real artists get lost in the shuffle because they don’t know where to go or haven’t been discovered yet. Thank you Red Bubble for letting us create

I think the level of engagement and frankness of this community in building the online place they wish to belong to – ie RedBubble – comes through very clearly in this thread. Yes there are points of difference but these points are made politely and with a willingness to listen. And the overwhelming sense is one of trying to solve problems and improve things, not to just be critical. It is very refreshing.

I visit my local art gallery maybe twice a year. I visit at least one new artist’s portfolio every day on RedBubble. 95% of my social networking is with RedBubblers. RedBubble is my “Cheers” bar, or my “Central Perk” Cafe… :-D For a more detailed insight, read my One year in the bubble. George

i agree that its the friendliest site.it’s well organised and run smoothly.
honest comments that aid learning and growing in the arts field are most helpful.
i feel safe here !!

what can I say? with all the kerfuffle on another website that proves that they are not “friendly”, we see RB emerge with a truly sensible approach!
Keep it up guys!

I’ve got to say, Red Bubble has overall impressed me very much. The site is well designed, secure, the submission limits are generous, and there are plenty of opportunities to learn about and show new work. On top of all that, the site has always been so…informal and friendly, without any kind of plastic nature to it. I look forward to seeing what else Red Bubble may do in the future, but so far, this is easily the best online artists’ community I have ever encountered….

Hi guys, iv’e only just joined this site and the one thing that is most apparent about it is it makes no attempt at exploiting subscribers and leads peoples interests free to explore, without any obligation. You have a very well thought out site and obviously understand the requirements of artists and art enthusiasts, the result, a friendly, proffesional, honest and creative site. Glad to be part of it!! Well done and thankyou. Onyx L.
