Happy and Nude by RedBubble

Posted on August 25, 2009

One of the joys of RedBubble is sharing the artistic journey.

The book “Nude” is now available (see below) and we are thrilled to launch a collaboration with Stefan Sagmeister, one of the world’s most creative and inspiring designers.

Sagmeister is producing a Happy Film that will look at the wellbeing of people around the world. I met Stefan in Oxford and we talked about how RedBubble artists could participate (I love the potential of global art projects).

The project is simple, RedBubble artists are asked to rate themselves on a scale from 1-10 (1 being seriously depressed, 10 being overjoyed) and then create a self-portrait expressing that state. Any artistic medium/technique is allowed. Stefan and team will be animating the best of these results into a sequence.

The works should use this template, including its 16:9 landscape format. For the animation to work the face needs to essentially fit within the line of the template.

Stefan will select works to go into the documentary and it is possible that works will also be exhibited in a New York Gallery.

+ Prizes. We will be giving away two signed copies of Sagmeister’s amazing book Made You Look.

So get the crayons, plasticine, canons, cannons out over the next week and then add your work to the challenge.

Nude Revealed (& Breathtaking)

After a teasing build-up, the latest RedBubble publication Nude is now available and is quite frankly breathtaking. In the words of one reviewer it highlights the impressive quality of art to be found among Redbubble members..

It was launched on a wet and woolly night, but that didn’t deter the nudists from braving the elements and huddling together to bathe in the afterglow of their handiwork. Bottles were uncorked, goon was quaffed, and literary goodness digested.

Some of the most exciting work on RedBubble was entered into challenge from which the final works were chosen. We, and everybody else who has seen the final book, is delighted with the result.

To purchase, please email aboutmyorder@redbubble.com with “Nude Book Order” in the title and your postal address in the body. We’ll then request a payment using PayPal.

I’m often nude (in the right locations) and pretty happy. So pleased to see it’s now available.
There is a Dutch saying that I’ve used on some very important personal occasions:
    Lang gewacht en still gezwegen.
    Nooit gedacht en toch gekregen!

Means something like: Worth the wait!!
    Love the challenge!

Fantastic news about the book and collaboration with sagmeister. Just one question regarding the sagmeister project – what about copyright of the photograph we take – who owns it. Great to have a free book, but what about the copyright for sagmeister to publish this in his book and exhibition?

Not comfortable jsut singing my image accross as a totally Free Roayalty Free image. Will publication and /or exihibition / or other publication of the image be restricted jsut to the book and the one-off exhibition?

or is it a total FREEBIE for Mr. Sagmeister

  • RedBubble:

    Good and important question.

Yes you do get to keep full copyright and Stefan will only have a limited license for this project. You will retain full entitlement to sell, promote, license to other people or whatever you like with your image.

  • Natalie Tyler

    Natalie Tyler

@ C Hummel – there’s a little more info here. “In entering this challenge you are providing a license for the work to be included in Stefan Sagmeister’s project the “Happy Film” and for purposes of promoting this project. You retain copyright”.

Out of interest, how come this book needs to be purchased via email and paypal? Why can’t we buy it from the RedBubble store like normal?

  • RedBubble:

We’re trying to lighten the load on the tech team so we can start to make a little more headway on a few initiatives. Hence we’re selling Nude manually.

  • georgiegirl

Congrats to everybody who’s work is included in this new book and also to those involved with the creation of the finished product. If you put Nude with the other awesome books in the RedBubble store then more people would see another fantastic book and reusable frames available for sale.

how close to the template does the portrait need to be? is it sufficient that it is roughly centred and head chopped off a bit and neck and shoulders?

  • RedBubble:

Yes – it does not need to be a tight fit to the template.

I wish you many sales and tremendous success.

Just a note to let you know, there are three b’s in the text here
and I am wondering, how do we submit our products into the RedBubble Store?

    Aloha ’oe

    Sharon

  • RedBubble:

    Sharon
Thanks for that on the three b’s. You can’t really submit products to the store. It is for RedBubble related products. (we were testing some books which is why they are there).

    My quastion is:
How do we ‘enter’ our product?
I have searched RedBubble, but have not found the answer (probably staring me in the face!)
    Here is my entry

  • RedBubble:

Keith – LOVE your entry to kick it off. And the answer is below. The challenge will be open in a week. I wanted to give people some time to prepare some entries.

  • G. David Chafin

    G. David Chafin

  • RedBubble:

    G. you will have been notified if it is in there.

  • Lynnette Shelley

    Lynnette Shelley

aagh. I am busy with another project but I am totally going to blow this off to enter this challenge :D

  • RedBubble:

That is the sort of commitment we like to see.

  • Sazzart

    Sazzart

I understand the composition theme; ( 1 to 10 & all that,) at the risk of sounding dense; I’m not clear on can our submission include a subject/model, be it self or other? Clarification’d be greatly appreciated :)

  • RedBubble:

It is supposed to be a self portrait in some form. How you see your self is really up to you – sometimes I feel like a disembodied website for example and just can’t shake that off for days on end.

  • Adam Bykowski

    Adam Bykowski

I find this guy odd. Feel this has to be said. I don’t get his basic style and don’t care for it. Reminds me of a new millenium version of an Andy Warhol. I never could stand Andy Warhol.
Hope you guys have fun with it and hope it brings some good noteriety to RB, just not my thing.

  • RedBubble:

Adam, yes Stefan does polarize a bit. Personally (in my rather virtual way) I love the way he mixes the real world and the abstraction of it (ie art). But can understand why others don’t.

  • linaji

    linaji

WELL.. now.. I AM SO IN!! What a great project and example at how fun it is TO LIVE!

  • ayarti

Question: I understand we have to stick to the provided canvas size, but do we also have to loosely stick to the head position that is in the template? Can the head be bigger, smaller, can we shift it down to include the top of the head, etc.. or does it have to pretty much fit that position?

  • RedBubble:

Yes we do need to fit within the template, for the animation to work the face needs to be roughly the same size as the face in the template. (apology if my previous answer gave the wrong impression but we got a lot of very non-compliant images!)

  • LTScribble

    LTScribble

I hope u guys answer ayarti’s question because i was wondering the same thing. By the way, what’s nude about a head shot? If this is just a portrait of the face then the title “Happy Nude” is a bit misleading. Plz clarify….and thanks loads, for this opportunity

  • RedBubble:

    see above.

  • rightasrain

    rightasrain

LTScribble, ‘Happy’ is for the 1st challenge (head), ‘Nude’ is the publication.

Re head position, read further back:

    SoxyFleming about 19 hours ago:
how close to the template does the portrait need to be? is it sufficient that it is roughly centred and head chopped off a bit and neck and shoulders?
RedBubble replied about 17 hours ago:
Yes – it does not need to be a tight fit to the template.

We have delayed it for 24 hrs as we need more clarity from Stefan on how close to the image – first few entries were way off.

  • Pilgrim

The happy challenge which I have entered with my self porrtait which has the mood of 2 out of 10. The image I created using a basic computer paint /mouse program with the template as a guide. My mood had very recently taken a huge blow, on hearing that the U.K courts have ruled that my nine year old son is forbidden by law to meet with me in my country of residence which is Portugal. I am only permitted to communicate with him by email or skype at “reasonable” intervals. I am to have no direct contact with him. Having raised my son since new born and never having done anything but love and nurture him , I feel a great wrong has been done . Hence my mood being so adversly affected. In a way , my self portrait entry has been affected by these events. I would probably have done something hand drawn.. if it was not for my energy being so depleted by the devastating impact of the court’s rulings.
Thank you for reading this far. Ever hopeful , I hope that my rather compromised effort to complete this challenge .. especially the concentration required by me to forfill the technical template aspect .. being somewhat of an intuitive worker, will be noted to mark this extremely serious infringement of human dignity described above..
