The Beauty of the RB Friendship Onion
I’m pretty certain I have one of the greatest jobs in the universe.
Working remotely from home for Redbubble means that I don’t have to deal with traffic, if my children are ill and need to stay home from school it’s no biggie, and I can wear my Elmo pj’s all day and no one will even batt an eyelid.
Except my dog. But I have a large stash of schmacko’s to keep her from blabbing to the neighbours ;)
For all that though, I find myself isolated. The personalities of my work colleagues are reduced to words on a screen, and an occaisional crackly voice over some shonky internet phone chat setup.
So when I find myself invited over to Melbourne to spend some real time at RB HQ, I always grab the opportunity in both hands and run with it as fast as my short little Elmo clad legs will carry me!
I mean let’s face it… no matter how hard we try to infuse our personalities down into our modems, what comes out on the other side is only going to be a shadow of our true selves. Being able to see someones face animated with life as they speak, being able to read their body language as you make them laugh… that is something we really can only do face to face. And it is these interactions that round us out and fulfill our sense of connection to other members of the human race.
For example…
Over the internet I could not have seen how much Geoff’s face lights up when he let’s rip with his infectious laugh.

I would never have realised that Xav, Troy and Russ are the Larry, Curly and Moe of Redbubble.

In my wildest dreams I couldn’t have guessed that Nat and Jo are soul sisters of the Cousin It variety.

Nor would I have been able to witness the effect a massive amount of caffiene has on Russ.

And I most certainly would never, ever, have imagined that Xav owned a pair of shoes. Let alone that he would actually wear them!

Spending some quality real world time with my colleagues has given a much greater depth to our interactions with each other over the internet, and this is something that I have also witnessed at the many Redbubble meet-ups I have attended. These meets are so much more important than just “putting a face to a name”. Meeting fellow creatives from Redbubble provides a deeper sense of connection that simply can’t be conveyed through the written word alone.
If you have never had the opportunity to attend a Redbubble meet, go hunt one down in your area or even better yet, why not organise one yourself?
Your life will certainly be the richer for it.
P.S. For those who are wondering at the title of this journal well… Shrek was pretty big in our house ;) And friendships are like onions. Many different layers.

Shrek was pretty big, wherever he went….......

Met-up in Sydney, at the town hall. That seems (IS!!!) such a long time ago!!

You know, not everybody likes onions. CAKES! Everybody loves cakes! Cakes have layers!
You know what else everybody likes? Parfaits. Have you ever met a person, you say, “Let’s get some parfait,” they say, “Hell no, I don’t like no parfait”? Parfaits are delicious.

Now everyone else, listen up. Come support a great Australian artist, who is meeting with world renown. I’ve just given him his first solo exhibit right here on Red Bubble. His reception is tomorrow, in the gallery (forum). Come party with us and have some virtual coffee and fun.

So very true, Rhana. Beautifully written – - last Friday (10.07.2009) was the first meet-up I’ve been to and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. My only regret was I couldn’t stay as long as I wanted to. I will certainly be going to more. I encourage everyone who can to either go to one or organise, it’s so worth it. P.S.: it was lovely to meet you, too. Cheers, Jan.

Was fantastic to meet you too Jan, I am so very glad you found us this time!

Apart from meeting other bubblers at photo shoots locally, I followered through on an invitation to leave Victoria and meet up with Wendy Slee in Perth WA. She is now one of my closest friends.
Another very close friend and Soul Sister on RB has invited us to stay with them. So come this October, we are flying to the USA to spend a week with tkrosevear.
All I can say is that, RB has given me one of the greatest present yet.
Who could ask for introductions to new friends around the world, yet getting to meet them.
Way to go Bubblers….....
RedBubble replied
What a wonderful story Larry, thanks so much for sharing.

A meet with the artists on Redbubble would be fantastic. Then I could experience everyone first hand.

I don’t know any RBer in the real world that I didn’t recruit myself, I dunno who’s near me. How about doing a Google maps thing of who’s in what city, just the city/town/area whatever mind, not exact gps locations, I don’t want the feds to know where they can find me.

I have to agree with you all. I’ve never met anyone on here that I didn’t like! Everyone has been so welcoming, supportive and a wealth of knowledge. I love my RB family, and can’t wait to meet up with more of you. I have a trip to England planned in the not to distant future to meet up with Justine Devereux – she’s my international soul sister, who I love to bits :ox
Local awesome photographer Mick Davson
Mick is just an incredible mate, who’s support and knowledge has turned me from a camera mad mumma into a paid photographer! We catch up when ever we can.
My friends have taught me that we can all learn something from one another, we just need to allow ourselves to open up to accept the challenge and be proud of our achievements!!

Great to see the RB big whigs!! lol…...I had just finished putting a post in my journal about the topic of how isolated we become when we are full time artists…..Your entry is right on! I have to say that when you are working and can’t get out & about….....the RB is REALLY an inspiration and amazing community.
I am only two weeks+ on RB and I find that all I want to do is see more work and meet more artists (which does NOT get my paintings completed!).....
but, I wish I could have a big party and invite you all!!!!!!!!!! ;))
Garth – your onion comment is a hoot…..
Thanks RB – for the great journal entry “Nothing beats a REAL smiling face!!

what a fantastic read and I’d love to meet my fellow RBs from Ontario, we should try to set something up as it would be wonderful and it’s true writing to someone and interacting that way is just not the same as interacting face to face with them, you guys do an awesome job and do it with great humour, well done and bravo to you all

Well I have met Mick Davson, through whom i entered into my first exhibition for the lions club, where i met Anne and a few others from RB. Also have spent time with Clive as well..great people.
I have also connected with Rosemaree whom i have become very good friends with and see regularly.
Today I did my first radio interview on the ABC where i promoted my Redbubble site.
6.30 this morning..lol..at least it wasnt TV and you couldnt see me..lol..
I am calling for our Redbubble family to donate along with myself, photo’s of Kinglake and Marysville, from before the fires to help give the communities Historic Society, who lost everything, to restart building their history.
Through this meeting I believe I have a few more people who might join our community.
So I am trying to be out there as well..hugs to all. Kristina K

I’m still waiting for the ANNUAL RED BUBBLE RED BALL
$60 a head [or $100 a pair] – dinner & band in a warehouse at the Docklands
Top featured art on display & interested art world people also invited.
C’mon RB Admin – we are the 2nd top community on line in the world !!!
Lets go for it and celebrate! & whoever’s in town can come
Perhaps run a comp for out of towner’s to win the accommodation [then pitch a tent on the beach for them …. no no no lol] Surely there’s a hotel that would donate some rooms for the world wide free advertisement of their establishment! [No not an add on the site but in the flyer/invite that we send everyone!]
We could even make it a fundraising event and charge corporations top dollar [that they’d claim back on tax anyway] and they can pay for the dinner of us struggling artists! lol
Now THAT’d be a Fantastic meet! we could have group banners showing the sort of art we promote! hold comps for winning seats at the group table, present annual group featured artists with red bubble trophy’s – have competitions for prizes & present them at the dinner!
OK it wont mean anything yet but it might just become the auspicious RedBubble Art Award! and fancy being an inaugural holder!
If it’s good then hold one in London & New York too! You heads get to go there for the shindigs! & could even have a competition to win a spot to go as guest artists to whichever one!
Perhaps that will spark interest in the group participation
Give it all REAL meaning not just Virtual!
just a thunk!
Chookas! X♥X

This is fantastic Rhana and I know exactly what you mean about working remotely and having only ‘virtual’ friends. I work from home in a similar situation and occasionally get to meet some of the people I interact with on the computer. Peeling the layers off the onion is a fantastic experience and makes the isolation at work a little more tolerable. Thank you for sharing… I love knowing how the RB team are doing as you all look like so much fun xx

Sadly my RB outfit (pink piggy PJs) went to heaven – I now have to break in the fluffy white sheep version. I haven’t been game to wear either on a RB meetup but there have been many outings with RBers, local and international, and every time I feel I’m meeting friends I’ve had since before time began. Thanks Rhana for the HO cameos – it sorta explains a lot!!!!

Now that the kind of job i like to have.. lol
stay home in my pajamas work on the computer..
i know one thing my dog sure would be happy.
she would have to go to her pen at work.. she can sleep on my bed..
I would have to get up so early either..

Boy, I do envy you, it sounds like my ideal job!! At the same time, I can understand what you mean about human contact. I guess these days we do tend to isolate ourselves too much and then we feel like there is something missing in our lives, no wonder!!
Michelle Hogan
I think we also get a great insight into people through redbubble as we don’t make those instant judgments that normally go with a first time meeting with someone. We see so many of their inner layers and really get to know people possibly better than we know some of our acquaintances from our everyday life. I cant wait to meet some of the gorgeous people I have come to know here. They have helped me grow with their inspiring images and insightful comments. RB rocks x

great to see you guys….you do fabulous work…thanks for sharing !

Well, I’m wearing my version of pajamas and smiling over your post, photos, and all the enthusiastic comments. But I’m in Alaska, so no one can see me. I gather that’s you, Rhana, grinning while peering over the shoulders of two RB male hunks?
