RedBubble Thursday

Welcome to another Thursday morning in sunny Melbourne, Australia. Here’s what we pushed out this morning:

  • Posters are now available for your art works – as a shameless plug, you can see a sample here for one of my own designs. Check out that slick poster preview Grant’s been working on! Posters are best suited to strong graphic designs, not photographs, so please only tick the box if your work is suitable. We print these at a minimum of 150dpi on A2, A1 and A0 paper sizes (then trim off the white space), so they’re pretty impressive!
  • We’re now doing real wrapped canvases with deep white edges (for the same price!)—a photographic sample can be seen down the bottom of the config screen
  • Groups can now elect to approve (or not approve, of course) work as it’s added to the group, which will help the moderators of our busiest groups keep the content within their guidelines. Group owners, you can make this change in the “edit this group” screen.
  • We now show more people on the community page, so if you’re featured there, you’ll be featured longer, which is nice.
  • We’ve also nuked the “what’s hot” from the community page, and we’ve replaced it a with The Daily Wrap (a daily-ish report from RedBubble staff about stuff we find interesting or noteworthy on the site from day to day).
  • The bio text on your overview page is no longer truncated/chopped, which means you’re free to “go nuts” in there and do whatever you like—it’s your profile, after all. This also meant that the “profile” page was redundant, so it’s gone.
  • You can now report inappropriate BubbleMails, so if someone really isn’t playing nice, you can let us know (yes, there’s other things BubbleMail needs, like delete—please be patient!)

...and some little things we’ll let you discover for yourself.

So that’s a wrap-up of Ice-T#3. We’re just about to kick-off #4 here at RBHQ and we’ve got a wildly optimistic set of things we want to do. The biggest priority this week is to show our fulfillment houses some more love to make their life much easier (which means faster production times and less things going wrong).

The rest of the week will be consumed with lots of little things that we’ve been meaning to do for a while. It’s a massive list, most of which have already been talked about a lot, so I won’t list them again here (and I’m not really sure how many we’ll get to) so you’ll have to wait and see next week!

in regards to the ‘real’ wrapped canvases… you mean like with wooden frame, rather than the gator board? The description still talks about the gator board… so I’m confused

  • Faizan Qureshi

So we have to edit all our work to include posters?

Community page rocks… but it’s rather long.

Also, there’s a cut off in the community journal… I can’t seem to go to “previous” set of journals, can only see one page of them.

Paul, it’s still on Gator, because it’s much safer to ship and doesn’t require as much stretching (which results in much cleaner edges and a nicer finish). We showed these to a lot of people and the gator wrap won hands down.

Featuring five artists on the community page looks professional and allows for rotation. Double thumbs-up.

It would be preferable to see ‘Groups’ placed below ‘Journal’ entries on each member’s profile page.

    Thanks for your efforts.

@Melinda – Cals are still very much in progress – We are still tweaking the product to get the best possible print quality and price. At this stage to the best of my knowledge we expect to launch them later in Nov – yeah it’s going to be cutting it fine for christmas, but we’ll make sure they fly out the door once they are launched.

I don’t know which I find the most pleasing and impressive, a site where the Admin team is so on top of things getting done or so adept at keeping the community abreast of the changes ongoing? Oh heck they are both AWESOME! Thanks for the posters, the canvas, and everything on the community page! I give us 2 years tops before we are the toast of the proverbial photosite internet sites! Three cheers for the RB Team!

Justine – You say “big files” for the posters in an earlier comment. It would be tops if you can you give us some guidelines on file size/px . I can only get the small size on previewing mine and one of my files is not big enough for a poster at all. Thanks

I gather collapsing the profile into the overview page was on today’s agenda, too?

    Me like!!

It was driving me nuts trying to get my index to my images to break properly before I ran out of space the old way!

Agree on the comment of putting journals over groups, but can live with either way.

Any chance of getting one more row of art? I know I’m pushing it! :-)

Keep up the great work – it’s awesome to watch this site evolve even in the short time I’ve been here.

  • Walter Quirtmair

Since almost all my works are good for Posters it would be nice if there’s a way to switch on the “Poster” flag for all works at once. It’s annoying if I need to edit all my hundreds of photos…
    OTOH great work, thanks!
    Walter

  • Justin French

    Justin French

    W. J. St. Christopher – there were no base price changes, so what are you referring to?

  • Justin French

    Justin French

Walter, that’s a tough one, because we really want to discourage that kind of semi-concious decision making. Took a quick look at your portfolio and your stuff is mainly photographic, so I’d suggest you don’t need to edit most of them at all, because the posters aren’t suited to photographs as much as graphic design work.

  • Justin French

    Justin French

Gah, hit “add comment” too soon, but the other thing I wanted to say is that some bulk editing options would be great one day.

  • W. J. St. Christopher

    W. J. St. Chri...

    Hi, Justin,
I only noticed it because a potential buyer emailed me. It seems my pre-markup and post-markup (retail) prices are showing slightly higher than they were just a day or so ago. For instance, my pre-markup price for a card (and I use the same markup for everything) has been $2.25US and is now listed as $2.38US. I haven’t changed my markup or anything else, as far as I know.

Or, the fact that it’s 5 hours past my bedtime could mean that I shouldn’t be doing anything remotely math-related right now! I’ll check on it later today, and get back to you.

Thanks for letting me know that there hasn’t been an actual change.

  • gordontant

    gordontant

Firstly, I love the changes, and the group approval thing too.

but as Walter has pointed out we have a lot of images and I for one would like the ability to change what format they are sold as easier, please see link to forum here

  • Tanya B. Schroeder

I’ve noticed the price hike in cards, too. So it’s just a glitch?

  • W. J. St. Christopher

    Justin,
You suppose that Posters are not for photographs, but that’s wrong. I just recently had a request for one of my photos in extra-large size which now would be no problem with Posters. Some of my photos already has been printed and sold as Poster (not on RB), so I’d like to enable the Poster flag for all of my works here on RB as well…

  • Nicholas Averre

    Nicholas Averre

    Nice one, Thanks Justin!

  • Xavier Shay

Walter – we say that because it’s not just about size. Simply put, photos look a bit flat on posters compared to our other wall art products, and they don’t highlight the quality of the work. But we do just say “great for” to emphasize exactly that – what the product is best for.

  • Xavier Shay

    Xavier Shay works here

hmm, that sounds a bit negative. They’re only flat because there’s no finish, unlike mounted/framed prints. We printed a whole range of images on photos – you’ve seen the shots of TBO’s illustration – including a lot of James’ photos, and posters really shine with graphic art.

  • peter

    peterworks here

@Tayna – US base prices have changed reflecting the changing value of the US dollar over the last few months. We update our base prices about every three to six months to take into consideration changes in exchange rates.

  • W. J. St. Christopher

    W. J. St. Chri...

Thanks for that info, Peter, I knew something had changed!

Now, we REALLY need a batch edit button. I want to keep my retail prices the same as they were. Even with only a few pages of items, I’m dreading having to edit them one-by-one.

  • Justin French

    Justin French

Why do you want to keep them the same? I mean, I understand that if you picked a nice round number and you might want to keep that nice number, but a user browsing the site in a different currency is going to see a completely different number (and we’re adding more currencies soon, so the chances of that will increase).

  • W. J. St. Christopher

    W. J. St. Chri...

Because I’ve been marketing the cards to my local customers at a certain price—and it’s WAY to soon for them to see a price increase. I rely on these buyers to support my higher priced art, too, and it’s important to maintain my credibility with them.

After the holidays, I’ll feel more comfortable with a slight price increase, but not yet. It’s just about my local business—no worries!

  • Tanya B. Schroeder

    Tanya B. Schro...

Thanks for the clarification, Peter. It’s only a few pennies, after all! And just another sign that our economy is slowly going down the toilet.

I’m sorry, was that out loud? :-)
