Working with Press to Promote Your Art
We recently read two great articles that feature RedBubble artists.
Mindy McGregor
Mindy McGregor is an artist and stay at home mom. An art curator found her work on RedBubble. Since that connection, Mindy has displayed her work offline several times in Melbourne, and she now has a new solo show in Sydney, Australia.
As part of the Sydney show, local and regional newspapers were sent information about Mindy and her upcoming show. Periodicals were also offered an interview with Mindy about her artwork.
From the article: “Soon after joining RedBubble, an online artist group (www.redbubble.com), she was contacted by Andrew May, an art curator.” “The 30 photographs in the Sydney exhibit are mainly images from southern Saskatchewan, because McGregor loves to capture bits and pieces of province’s history.”
More information: Mindy McGregor | The Leader-Post article
Tom Baumker
Tom Baumker is a respected US wildlife photographer who was recruited by an existing member to join RedBubble. Tom’s work was recently shown on his local CBS television affiliate as part of a story about the US holiday, Memorial Day. Tom also hands out “at least 20 business cards each day” in order to drive traffic to his RedBubble profile page. The local TV spot led to an article about Tom’s work in the TC Palm, a periodical focused on the coastal area of Florida, USA.
From the article: “Baumker starting taking photos when he was 7 years old. His education in photography came mostly from the school of hard knocks and by reading as many books and magazines as he could get his hands on. Since then, he has taken thousands of wildlife photographs. Many of them end are on his Web site – redbubble.com.”

How can you secure press about you and your artwork?
David Watts Barton, a 25-year veteran of The Sacramento Bee and well-known music and arts writer who’s currently the managing editor of SacramentoPress.com – a local online daily periodical that is mixing professional and citizen journalism, stated:
“Start with the four Ws – who, why, what, and where. Beyond that, be sure to pique the writer’s curiosity. Most local publications want to write stories about local people. Just give them the hook and the basic information – don’t sell the subject. Just tell the story. If it’s interesting to the writer, they’ll bite. If not, no amount of hype will sell it.”
Other tips include:
1. Make the information newsworthy by capitalizing on a trend, e.g., working from home, secondary income streams, networking online, etc. are hot topics right now.
2. Leverage events such as artwalks and current events such as holidays – tying them back to your work.
3. Provide thought leadership if possible. If your work documents a specific topic in which you have expertise, note that in your pitch. Offer an interview and be on time.
4. Build a relationship with newspaper and press staff. One isolated email won’t do most of the time. Send editors commentary, leads, feedback on past articles, etc. It’s easier to sell your artwork to a friend; the same goes for securing press.
5. Be consistent in both your tone and the frequency in which you write editors. Become familiar and there will be less hesitation on the editor’s part to engage.
6. And lastly, don’t send attachments without prior approval. Link to images whenever possible.
Let’s conclude
In Tom’s case above, you have a dedicated photographer whose subject matter matched the upcoming US holiday. With Mindy, you have an aspiring photographer who was “found” and whose work captures and space and place in the form of a collection.
See how you go and let us know how you do. Also, if you were featured in a periodical or publication, please feel free to post the link and details below.
If you already create articles about selling art, please point us to them below. More information about selling your art can be found under the Selling member name.
Thanks.

truly interesting… but the real question is : is my work worth of it ???

Straighten up. Shoulders back. You can do it, but it takes persistence and some amount of humility. (Jason)

Priceless information well received from me that’s for sure. I can’t thank redbubble enough. The amount of phenomenal contacts I have made and the commissions I have received have mostly been due to redbubble. I have been able to further my studies, gain personalised tuition from a former Uni level Art teacher and made amazing friends.
Thank you redbubble!

As an extra sideline to this, I was reading Australian Photography Magazine not long ago and came across a 6 page article on one of our own bubblers Victor Pugatschew. Actually thats not quite true. I bought the magazine because I saw the article as I was skimming it in the shop.

lol @Francis one man’s junk work is another man’s masterpiece. I recently joined twitter and have a couple art museum’s following me. I have noticed more traffic on my pages but have still not managed to sell multitudes of items nor have I been contacted by any of them but one never knows until you try.
Richard Murch
.. Good advice…. but will it work ..?
RedBubble replied
It’s hard work, Richard. Developing relationships and tuning your story takes time. Some people don’t have the stomach for this type of promotion, but you’ll never know until you try.
My paper features local artists on its monthly covers … and I’m still pushing to be featured. You’ve got to set goals, try, and try again. (Jason)

That’s fantastic but I think the curator is Andrew May not Lay. Andrew does amazing work promoting photographers and putting together exhibitions, thank you Andrew for all you do.

Thank you!

Andrew is a member here Jason and I think it would be great for RB to also foster relationships with the people that are out there activily promoting and exhibiting RB artists, eg, may be some kind of sponsorship for exhibits, etc.
I think these relationships are just as important to RB and should be nurtured.

Wow….wonderful advice!
I wish I were in “that league” —maybe someday!!
Thanks for posting this!!!!

Very useful, thankyou! :-)

This is great. One more tip I’d throw in is to write the news yourself. Several of my local newspapers accept articles from the public for their community and what’s on sections. One of them has an online form to submit articles and even gives advice on how to structure your writing to improve your odds of it going to print.
Jaeda DeWalt
Informative and helpful, thanks for posting!
And Kudos to Mindy McGregor and Tom Baumker :)

Another Tip:
Write a press release about yourself and a up and coming exhibition, I used a similar press release to this one and it was published.

I like to contact publishers and editors all over the world to showcase my talent, that’ll be cool.

no.6 is flawed ..
You always send images with a media release that is standard practice if a journalist is reading your information they dont want to wander around the internet trying to find your images clicking on links that might or might not work ,they read your exhibition info see what kind of work you produce and decide if they are interested and you offer to supply a higher res of your work under agreement if they need to reproduce in the chance of a cover story.
RedBubble replied
I think the advice is to send them as an attachment and provide a link back to your website – so that when the post the image they’ll link it back.

There’s enough work out there for all of us, you just gotta get at it the right way. Good luck all and great advice.

I have found that it’s the unusual shot that’s the attention grabber where editors are concerned. For example, this one started me off on a nice association with our local community paper who has published several of my photos since. I keep up with local news and gossip and try to be in the right place at the right time (being retired is a big help here!) The paper’s own photographer takes the real “newsy” stuff so I look for a slant on the story – for example our recent big bush fire was well covered but my photos of the helitaks taking on water received almost as much space. Wonderful advice ty, i actually came across RB quit accidentally, but i am enjoying being apart of a wonderfully talented community. I started out on another site where i sell my photos as stock photography here it is a lot different, and i am not sure if my stye really suites here.
Any help with this would be appreciated.
Thank you.

thanks for this .. and well done to those two artists, that’s fab !

Excellent and very helpful information, but as someone earlier has asked – Is my work good enough? I get so little response now on here, I fear I was just a novelty to start with.
Having said that I would encourage the youngsters on here to have a go. If at first you don’t succeed DON’T give up. Rejections are just stepping stones to success. Good Luck.

Thanks a lot Jason and Jo O’Brien, I have been thinking of this, to be honest, thinking about it hasn’t done me much good so far, I believe the action goes further. :o)
The first step to the action is always the heavy one, and to know where to take off. How to sell the/your story. Comfort zone, it’s a nice place to be. :o) I guess it comes down to ask the question, “What have I got to lose?”

There are heaps of benefits to getting a ‘press release’ published, not the least of which is the credibility it gives – one of my mentors says that advertising makes people hide their wallets – publicity makes them want your autograph!! There is certainly a real art to writing an effecitve press release …
Kymbo
Wow! Thanks so much for the tips. I will have some spare time up my sleeve in a few weeks, and I look forward to following through with some of your ideas.

The article written by Kerry Benjoe in the Leader-Post is very poor journalism. Unfortunately, the journo got the most basic thing wrong – the spelling of Mindy’s surname. Plenty of other mistakes in that piece, too.
Good luck to Mindy and Tom.

Congrats Mindy and Tom! I would also like to add that I have recently featured RedBubble artists in a quarterly ‘zine I publish online. When funding becomes more readily available, it will go to print four times a year but until that happens, I will be offering one print volume for the year.
The cover is from a brilliant RedBubble artist, Martin Muir, thanks Martin!!

Hi…if i get noticed, i wud like my work published and earn, if possible…thanks RB for very encouraging note.

Here are a few additional tips provided by another reporter (and friend):
- Make sure that you contact the right person at the publication – search the web site or call the general number to find out who the right person is.
- Try to pitch the story with a time peg – an event or a release or something that has an upcoming date to which the story can be “pegged,” as we call it.
- Tell the publication about the story/event at least three to four weeks in advance (but not several months in advance).
- Before pitching, make sure the publication hasn’t written about that topic recently, or if they have, offer a different angle so they can’t say, “We just did something on that.”
- Think like a “regular person” when pitching, not like the specialist you inevitably are. Publications are looking for stories that will appeal to mass audiences, not developments that are only relevant to a small niche already dialed in to that subject.
- Press releases are helpful for some, but the basic info – who, what, where, when—plus a paragraph explaining what’s new or interesting about it is enough. Make sure to include a contact number.

This is all new to myself, I have never worked on line to show something off. I am attempting to show off some of my creative side in the music design prints I have presented online. They were done some 15-16 years ago when I retired from business and decided to venture into something that made me excited to get up every day and move forward. It cost me my wife of 25 years, kids and well my life surrounding that. Nevertheless I carried on and now that as of the 11th of June I am 60 I becoming excited to do it again through a different medium. As I said I don’t know what I am doing exactly but maybe with a little bit of luck and community help these prints of mine will open up a door around the World that I can walk into and be better than I am today and even better tomorrow. So if anyone out there wishes to assist me please contact myself and start a journey. Who know where it may go. A friend to all and to all a good day. Have a look and give me an opinion.

Very interesting article and I will try and implement some ofthe suggestions here. It is less difficult because I am in Hungary….but I will have a word ih he person who gave me an exhibiton recently, and see what he suggestes from the point of view of promoting my work.

POEM that I wrote “Oh to a Friend” and I have art work on this site and www.fineartamerica.com
Once again acrash from above
Again and again into the screen
Bird flew faster and harder
Each time hitting the ground
A fast running flash of fur
life or death for bird
Jaws not yet crushed
My pet release now!
My chest beat thump thump!
I embraced my new found friend motionless
Would you like a drink of cold water?
Still motionless
My friend and I drank and drank
Now awake with soft feathers, orange beak
shades of gray, purple, orange, and blue
such intellegent gentle eyes you have
I opened my hands to see my disabled friend
Like a bullet flew away
See you later, a friend

This is great info and much appreciation to RB for sharing this with us.
Now, is this possible for someone such as myself who is a beginner at photography. Also, someone who has low self-esteem and lack of confidence. This is a big step for someone like myself. Would this really be recommended for someone who is only a beginner such as myself?
Though since joining RB, I must add that everyone here has been totally excepting of me and my work. It appears that everyone seems to be equal (within reason) as to what levels we are all at. Experts or Beginners, no matter. I am getting some great comments back from my work (without sounding Bias), which I didn’t think I would. I thanks RB and the members for having me here and liking my photographs. BUT, back to my original question. Is this possible for someone like myself who is only just starting out in Digital Photography?
Thank you anyway for this very informative information. Greatly appreciated.
