We can make calendars (but ....) survey.
A little while ago I promised I’d have some more news on our calendar dreaming soon – We’re not 100% there yet, still fiddling around with the final printing stock, size, ordering hanger material etc BUT it’s really close … I’ve made some calendars that everyone I show them to like, including some real life users ! So there’s good news, bad news and we need your help.
The Good: We are looking at a 13 page, A3 sized 300 GSM calendar, wire bound for about $18USD ($20AUD) – Plus a dash of postage. They feel heavy and look nice.
The Bad: Christmas is coming and we have too much to do – But, if there is enough demand “we’ll” ( read Justin ) will try and find a way to squeeze them in somehow.
The Help: So what I’d ask you guys to do is help us by answering a couple of questions (in the comments or via BubbleMail to me is fine)
1) How many calendars as described above would you buy of your own work to sell or give away ?
2) How many calendars would you buy from other artists to keep or give as gifts if they were available ?
3) How many ‘best of RedBubble category’ style calendars would you buy if they were available ?
4) What’s of most interest – 1, 2 or 3.
Ultimately I think we will do 1, 2 and 3 – But for this year we might have to compromise and I want to make sure we make the right choice to keep as many of you guys happy as we can !

1) How many calendars as described above would you buy of your own work to sell or give away ? – I would get 5
2) How many calendars would you buy from other artists to keep or give as gifts if they were available ? – can we mix and match other artists art work? If so I would include my favorite art in the 5 callendars (along with some of my own)
3) How many ‘best of RedBubble category’ style calendars would you buy if they were available ? one – for myself
4) What’s of most interest – 1, 2 or 3. One

The price is reasonable..and coming from ya’ll I know that the quality would be excellent.. I would definately be interested in numbers 1 and 3. As far as how many I would buy..I would try to buy at least 10 of my own works and then probably one or two of the top choices…

I would buy some of my own pics to give as gifts depending on the template you finally decide on. If you are going to offer the best of stuff make sure its not drawn from the What’s Hot as I’ve seen some real crap on there. Actually I’ve seen a lot of crap on there. Popular but not good technically or artistically. Mostly whats hot is OK quality for a suburban camera club but as adverts for a site that calls itself an ART and DESIGN site it would be a backwards step. My gears are grinding alreadly at the thought of a best of Whats Hot aka the Antoine & Tofinn ministry of mediocrity calender with lots and lots of bad pics bosoms and sunsets. AAAAHHHHHHGGGGGGG what a horrid thought.
But apart from that it sounds great.

Now for the “I’m going off on a tangent, so feel free to just ignore this” part of the comment.
What I would really like is the ability to choose the image for each month (ie, not all from the one artist) Of course that would involve working out a pricing strategy for each image etc. Probably a nightmare, but it would give everyone the greatest flexibility. Of course the Gods of Bub (and maybe even us run-of-the-mill punters) should be able to put together “pre-packaged” calendars for “best of” stuff as well.
If you could just knock all that up for next Thursday, that’d be great :-)

1) How many calendars as described above would you buy of your own work to sell or give away ? – $20AUD is quite a reasonable price for a calendar I have to say, considering what I see ‘popular’ calendars going for at xmas time in the shops. It would depend on my financial situation at the time, but I can think of about 5 people I would buy calendars of my own stuff for. Probably not buy all at the same time, but when I had the money to spare.
2) How many calendars would you buy from other artists to keep or give as gifts if they were available ? – it would absolutely depend on who the artist is, whether i loved their work, and what pictures were included in it.
3) How many ‘best of RedBubble category’ style calendars would you buy if they were available ? Hmmmmm again it would depend on what pictures were included, but I’d have to say buying one of those would be a lot further down on my list.
4) What’s of most interest – 1, 2 or 3. – Mainly 1. I really like the idea of having my own art in a wonderfully produced calendar hanging on my wall.

seems like if we were to do calendars of users selected stuff, user made should start on whatever month they want and continue for 12 months, thus not having that 12 month window that makes it a yearly nightmare.

I know calendars are generally Jan to Dec, but maybe to make them more viable,
you could order calendars that begin and end at any month. Ie If i order in April, the calendar goes from May to May? It would then be a year round promotional tool for artists and a year round money spinner, rather than a new year to new year proposition.

Getting a bit late to get orders for Christmas this year, but for the 2009 calendars we can start early, and it will be great to have some 2008 samples in hand to show.
Is there a huge quality difference between this $18 calendar and the $240 one in the earlier calendar thread.

Oops just realised that is $18 US plus pp. Hope the exchange rate remains favourable for us until Christmas.

I’d buy at 5 to 10 of my own as gifts.
I’d buy 5 or so of other peoples, particularly if I could pick the pics and mix the artists.
I wouldn’t buy any of the ‘Best of’, as I rarely see anything I like there …
Most interest – 1 and 2

anyone got any update on how this is going as I have a few customers eager and waiting. any feed back would be great.

A Calendar is a great idea. I can’t say how many i would buy, but i would probably get a calander of my work and redbubble has so many talented photographers i would probably get some of the different pictures i like. I think redbubble has better quality than most products at the store so when i would have the money i would buy the calendar here than in the store. Go for it!!!

1. 5-10. Would there be a discount for more?
2. maybe. I used to buy calendars as gifts, so would use my own as a gifts-of-shameless-self-promotion!
3. It would have to be my choice of pics
4. 1,2,3 in that order
Good luck guys – hope you can make it work in time! :o)

Sounds like a great idea. A tricky one though for so many have their own ideas of what is art.
1. A couple as gifts perhaps
2. hard to say so many i like out there
3. If i liked the pics 1 or more

I’d want to see before buying.. but hypothetically:

2) It would depend on what images they used…

It would be lovely to be able to choose from works you have selected as your own favourites but I realise that may be a nightmare as far as payment is concerned. I suppose you could always have a flat price paid to an artist each time someone selects an image to be included in a calendar.
At this point in time I’d be most interested in a “best of” with a bit of room for choice. Personally I’d like to work on specific designs for a calendar of my own work, rather than just pulling random bits from the pieces I’ve alreay uploaded so for this year it’s probably not an option.
As far as the community side of things goes – It would be great if you could nominate other people’s work as suitable for a calendar or collect images as you do with favourites at the moment. You could also get a few themes going on the forums, perhaps encouraging people with similar tastes to nominate work so that there are a variety of “best of” calendars based on different themes. The collation of work itself could become a creative challenge.
What about groups named after months so that you can hand pick a piece of work from each month?
Getting carried away now … ahhh the possibilities

Super idea! I would buy some for gifts.

My Own Works: @ 10
Other Peoples Works: 1-5
Best of RB: 1-5
(Purchases could even be more depending on different things, but…I love the idea of the availability for xmas gifts.)

Oops forgot number 4: I’d like to get some of my work for family and friends for xmas, and the best of RB for myself…but for future I’d be interested in all of them. :)

SO WHERE IS THIS AT?
Chris Clark
Yep getting plenty of comments but no update. Have created my own calendar at the moment and have sold 15 so far, with another 5 weeks till christmas i think i will reach 50-80 and because of my own production costs I am selling at £19.50 for a 14 page A4 . my selling point is that the images are genuine photographs and can be used for framing up and display when the calendar is finished each month. Title “The Edinburgh Castle Collection”
would love to be able to purchase from RB at a decent price allowing for a generous mark up instead of giving away and free me up to market myself and images instead of printing calendars. Got to be a decent price from RB and the quality as all their other products should be excellent.
Come on RB what’s the latest.

I have one ready to go but it is getting too close to Christmas now. Plenty of time for 2009 though:)

Seems we can now order calendars – but cannot sell them. For me that seems to defeat the whole purpose, so we will again be to printing and binding our own calendars. Disappointing – because sourcing materials to do a quality job is not always easy, and still costs our customers more than if we were able to on-sell from Red Bubble. I’d said ten to ‘sell or give away’: now that will only be one (if any) this year. Maybe next year they will be saleable?
caroline ellis
how do you view all the calenders out there, including my own?
sparrowhawk
I have sold 2 of my Tokyo calendars and shipped direct to customer.
caroline – go in to mybubble and click on calendars. You can create and view them in there. You can’t view anyone else’s unless they publish it in their profile or journal.

1) How many calendars as described above would you buy of your own work to sell or give away ? = 10
2) How many calendars would you buy from other artists to keep or give as gifts if they were available ? = 1
3) How many ‘best of RedBubble category’ style calendars would you buy if they were available ? = 0
4) What’s of most interest – 1, 2 or 3. = 1 & 2
I would like people to buy even one of my works, I would like to know when we can post our calendar pics up, and how we can get them promoted (by style( photography, graphic art, painting, sketches, naive, contemporary, cartoon, classic, portraits, landscapes, etc.

I would probably buy a proof of each calendar I created. Ideally, to develop programming that would allow rotating calendars so that they sell year ‘round and customers don’t have to purchase past months unless they need them would be a huge draw. Also, to allow customers to select any number of months they like would be great, or at least choose between 12 and another size.
I signed up for the calendars, not realising they weren’t in place as yet.

Would have to see quality before purchasing – particularly that of the reproduced image. If it was up to (my) scratch, then I would purchase for onselling (my calendars)- 10 or more.
Would only buy other artists as gift for myself. Best of? None. First option interests me most…

My answers (and questions):
1) How many calendars as described above would you buy of your own work to sell or give away ?
Some – but if you can bring down the pricing for a bulk order it could also be 200 (yes!).
2) How many calendars would you buy from other artists to keep or give as gifts if they were available ?
Depends – probably none
3) How many ‘best of RedBubble category’ style calendars would you buy if they were available ?
Depends – probably none.

Now my question is, if it would be possible to have it printed in landscape format, which is better for my panoramic pictures ….. I already did that in the past 3 years, although only in half the height.

I think the price definitely sounds reasonable. As to options:
1) Probably 3-6
2) & 3) would depend if I could choose/mix-match the images.
4) All are of interest but 1for now until I know how the others work.
Sounds great guys!

I bought 25 of my own calendars last year to give to friends and family. I plan to do the same this year or maybe make it 30 as I ran out. Lots of people are using them. BUT, I did not buy from RedBubble – too expensive. I got a deal from Kodak with 30% off and less expensive to begine with. I got the cost per calendar to under $13 and free shipping. I just can’t afford the RB price.—Rene
