Take Two: Today's Release

We told you it was coming and then we let you have a sneak peak , then we tried to release it – But now it’s here.

So what’s new in this release, some big things, some smaller, all nice and shiny.
  • Clearly there’s a new look around the place and a whole lot of shuffling around. For a detailed look at this checkout the Backstage post
  • Tags now have to be comma separated, this is so you can have multi-word tags like “new york city” or “south australia”.
  • My Groups panel in MyBubble – This is replacing the “group news” panel to give you a better look at activity across your groups and to flag when there’s new Group Messages for you to check out. It also lets you quickly check in on challenges you’ve entered (and how many votes you’ve recieved).
  • Group messages are also now in your activity feed.
  • Image Feed (a.k.a. Work and Favorites from your watchlist, a.k.a. Work you may have missed) is now configurable. Pick what you want to see, or just turn it off completely.
  • Lovely new edit button – Let’s you quickly jump in to edit one of your works from the public view .
  • Members lists and “My Groups” in groups are now sorted in alphabetical order.
  • Group promotional tools – You’ll hear more about these soon.

So hopefully you all enjoy what’s finally gone out today – and we’ll do our best to squash any remaining bugs quick-smart.

Note also: Your activity feeds have to be disabled for a few hours while we update the database to to handle all the new group messages and put them in your activity feed. Sorry it takes so long, but there’s a tonne of activity!

- Russ says enjoy and have a nice day.

    Try pressing CTRL + F5 or CTRL + SHIFT + R, depending on your browser to force a refresh (try both if youre not sure).

    After some changes we made to the network some people’s browsers or ISPs are still pointing to the old location and need to have their caches cleared.

  • Rachel Stickney

    Sounds great! Can’t wait to check it all out.

    Hopefully you were able to fix the bug for “group moderation of my work” where it didn’t show the reasons, only whether an image was accepted or rejected. As a group host, I find that very frustrating when people don’t know why their work is rejected, especially if it’s an easy fix.

    Thanks!

  • Sam Mortimer

    Sam Mortimer

    @tags: will tags already there be automatically separated by a comma, or will we have to go back and add a comma to every tag of every piece of artwork?

  • RedBubble replied

    The commas were always there (even if you didn’t put them in) but the release should have tried to group common words together, so it’s best to check them anyway. It’s worth the effort though, all for the better.

    wider than 1024 in camino and safari. Tabs for home and my bubble have white space below them (other tabs don’t). NO left margin – r in red bubble smack against the left edge. Just some quick observations. I’m sure they’ll sort themselves out (with a little help). :-)

  • RedBubble replied

    It sounds like you have your text-size increased… check your View->Zoom menu in Safari because it definitely fits in 1024

  • Kieron Nolan

    Kieron Nolan

    I was worried about changes but these look good. I’m looking forward to the Group Promotional Tools. At the moment I’ve been pasting banners on people’s work inviting them to join.

    Continuing from bubblehex08’s comment about votes, currently it’s hard to navigate through challenge submissions. If there are 350 entries and you were one of the first to submit then at voting time you may get less views. Would it be feasible to view all entries as you do normal group work with a link underneath each to vote for them?

  • RedBubble replied

    When people view the challenge page, each person gets a randomised order of the challenge that only they see – so if you submit your work first, it might be last on some peoples but first on others.

    sweet.
    question – with this new taggin system, do we need to go back and re-tag our work?

  • RedBubble replied

    You’ll want to double-check. We’ve added commas for you, and the system has tried to guess ‘word pairings’ but it’ll be in your best interest to go through your work and double-check.

    I like it… might take a little getting used to… but it has a nice feel to it. There might be some areas for improvement… but until I get used to where everything is, I can’t really say what those might be. The overview page kind of has more of a twitter or facebook feel to it, which I’m not sure if I like but I’ll get used to. Overall I think the layout has great potential.

    but it need some adjustments!!!
    1. it is really slow
    2. some of the activities in the MYBUBBLE OVERVIEW …are doubled..tripled…etc

  • RedBubble replied

    The slow down was highly likely due to us still working on the release – should be back to normal now.

  • Diesel Laws

    Awesome. OMG OMG OMG there is an edit button on preview OMG OMG!

  • David Petranker

    David Petranker

    I will say what I dont like first, and its only one major problem, why in the main user page or profile page have you put our current or new art work down the bottom, a lot of us do our own marketing and use the user page as our card, I know we all like to brag what features we have got but the most important thing is our recent art work and a simple way for prospected customers to look at it. This site now seems and feels to be a community orientated website rather than a place for us to get our name out there and to sell our work. Why would you put view all art work down the bottom of our profile page. Are we trying to make it harder for people to purchase our work. Also saying this there seems to be a lot of backend development rather than trying to find new clients or purchases or government contracts. There are other companies out there which i have mentioned before who are out there promoting there product at every event, I have never seen Redbubble do that. Now on a positive note the layout is really nice the groups set out is really nice and easier to track. I still think you need to get the people who use this site on a daily basis together do a survey on what needs to be done.

  • RedBubble replied

    That’s not an intentional thing David – what web browser are you in and is it still doing this at the moment if you refresh the page?

  • Rosemary Scott

    Edit button….. Faaanntastic!!!!
    Just one slight prob…... I’m now not being notified when someone leaves a comment on my work….. Have discovered this by chance & don’t know if I’ve missed many.

  • RedBubble replied

    This should be fixed now. (But don’t let that stop you moving to Firefox…)

  • Karen  Betts

    wow this looks really good like the new lay out and seeing the groups with there avatar next to them helps. As to seeing how many votes i get in a challenge not sure as i got 0 in one of them LOL Yes a great job thank you off to see what it all does.
    Just 1 thing it is really slow, but i am guessing it is due to you still tweaking here and there and ,loading things in. well done appreciate all the work you have put into it.

    I am having trouble but then that’s me
    I have a huge white patch down the middle of my activities page with all the pictures and writing to each side I literally find myself moving my chair and keyboard to the left of my screen to work!
    I have also tried to “TONE DOWN” the BRIGHTNESS of my screen to very sad effect but for the life of me I cannot READ anything on the screen without squinting due to the brightness! I suppose it’s one way to curtail the addictiveness – I feel it will be very harmful to spend much time at all looking in the bubble now after only an hour trying to read my work I have the makings of eye strain headache – something I have only had when caught out in broad daylight needing to drive but not have my sun glasses!
    There’s a thought I’ll wear my sunnies bubbling!
    I’m not harking back to the old old bubble page but when the activity list was on the right the pictures were down the middle of the page right in your face and easy to see! If I shrink the page to bring the coloured images closer together I need a magnifying glass to read anything!
    So is it just me? or is the work split in half down each side of the screen & a massive big bright white patch down the middle? – if nothing else wouldn’t this be prime real-estate space?
    On a good note I do think you’ve actually given us another 10 character space width to the writing boxes THANK YOU!

  • RedBubble replied

    Sounds good! Still have to check it all, but I was immediately pleased with the clear view on challenges I participate in, theimages I have there and the current amount of votes. There are so many challenges going on at the moment, it was impossible to remember where I had what etc.
    Something I’ve missed with the earlier changes and I am not sure if anyone else did: notification when my work has been removed from a challenge. if I am notified on time, I can either argue against it or send another image to this challenge. And anyway, people may learn that way what’s not acceptable (since many send images that have nothing to do with the theme or have not been entered to the group).

  • conniecrayon

    SO sleek and user friendly ,love The Bubble ,its a great place to be (((((((((((((((O;

  • dimsim

    dimsim

    hmmm it looks great :) i like some of these features, but hope the site isn’t going to lose the wonderful simplicity that made it attractive in the first place …

    most importantly, the new tags will not overlay onto old tags, so the site will now have eg “new york city” images as well as newyorkcity ones, and some authors will want to update the old ones … which will be tedious ... so i wonder if the next phase will include a useful batch editing feature, especially for keywords and prices, this would be megauseful… needs to be able to batch-add, batch-delete, and batch-replace-all for the keyword feature to be much use …

    good luck with the ongoing development, and congrats on the current successful (?) release :)

    - can only see half the page at a time but hey I don’t have my chair rammed half way through the side wall!
    - Now what shall I put on my desk top to look pretty behind it?
    There now Can you picture it?
    This silly old broad with sunglasses on inside looking at half a screen trying to write at night!!

  • gaylene

    i many good things (commas betweeen words in tags) – but I hate the HUGE amount of space between my pictures on the left (if viewed especially by another redbubbler) and the right side of the screen only has a portion viewable with my name, the buy/preview button, the other imges I have spent ages importing etc. It seems a waste of effort at this point to put more than 1 image on at a time when I love to showcase so many pictures of a particular place I have beeen. And I cannot seee what I am typing at the moment as the button for Dont. forget, redbubble etiquette is blocking the views. And still grumbling – sorry – but is this update made for wide image computer screens…? I have to keep scrolling across or up and down.

  • RedBubble replied

    I’m going to guess you’re using Internet Explorer 6 there gaylene – unfortunately we had to crop the images on the right side of the artwork pages that people were putting in their descriptions (just in IE6) as they were breaking the layout in different parts of the site. Your images still show up, just slightly smaller, in all other browsers that can actually scale the images down properly. Perhaps if you grab Firefox and try using it you’ll have a better view.

    And I’ll fix up the RedBubble Etiquette link in the morning – sorry about that!

    this is all great! thanks for the hard work to make a great place to advertise and sale! still my only wish is for you guys to offer individuel prints like 4×6, wallets, 8×10, 5×7, ect… that would help allot of our businesses, at least mine were im a portrait photographer. i want to run my business directly threw you so i can gaurantee good quality prints. i hate it when people i do portraits for take them to cheap printing places makes my work look bad… but again great job with all you have done… still happy here.

    Which shadow would that be ;) I think I spot a Safari user…

    Well, it is a compass… much easier to use to find your way around, than a watch with the 12 pointing towards north!! Doesn’t everyone get a fuzzy shadow behind the images within the art pages? ooooh, I must be special :D

    Thanks for much better organisation of My Groups, and specially for the review of challenges entered (and number of votes; great!). Edit button is a great addition too :)
    Unfortunately, my activity feed doesn’t look well now (in Opera), with the descriptions under the pictures so that it takes in much more space, and the icons for various types of activities are also less quickly recognisable (stuck between all those thumbnails). And the page seems to be about 6x higher than its content now (= lot of free space on the bottom side now); not much practical for quick scrolling…
    Otherwise, well done, thumbs up :)

    This is probably just my OCD talking, but why are the number of the displayed photos on my group’s page different from page to page. On the front page, it’s 12 thumbs each for art and features, but inside it switches to 13. Why not 15? Is this something to do with the browser I’m using (IE) or. . .? I know some of you might find this a bit anal retentive, but I really don’t like that it’s unequal. Everything else is pretty cool though.

    Oh thank-you for that edit button, this will make this so much more managable. Lots of nice changes the group stuff is nice too.

    I am experiencing performance problems (it’s really slow) don’t know if this is caused by the cut over or the data bases. Since the new stuff cut over I’ve noticed alot of duplicate enteries showing up in the comments and replies even if you hit the enter key once. Might be a problem with the data bases referential integrity. Which could cause this and slow down searching.. You might want to check that.

    Another thing, it seems to take a long time loading up everything when you have alot of art like I do, especially for things like challenges. You might want to consider loading a users Art works up once at login, and leaving it in a buffer until you log off. This might help speed up transaction processing and response time, and free up the servers from load up the same Art over and over again when you are entering work in challenges.

    I know more things to consider, but in the end you could wind up saving you need for more servers..

    Oh well, overall I liked the work done it a really good change!!.

    • I’m not crazy about my Artwork being so far down in the page: I consider all my art to be viewed before people view other things on my profile page.

    *Before, when I changed my Profile, I could then click on ’ View my Public Profile ’ to see if I did it right. That option is gone (unless I’m mistaken, please correct me)... I have to go to “OVERVIEW” and then to the View Public Profile to see. The extra step is now taking longer than the previous version.

    Overall – MANY great changes, I haven’t gone into the configuration of watchlist etc, but will try that.

    KUDOS! Great improvements on the whole.

    Not as bad as I thought bar the Groups window hogging real estate space in My Bubble… Much better imo as a hidded expandable list… more and more real estate it seems is being consumed by these Gimmicks. The functionality was there, it was neat and it worked….

    Have not yet sees how the groups messages will affect the activity feeds… I actually had to drop out of some groups when it employed the bubble mail method… due to message OD…. Then came The windowed version… better but as above hogs MyBubble real estate…

    If this is a separate link now in your feeds that you can click on and chose to view – much better imo that having it on a like it or not basis… Please add a toggle switch for those myGroups windows on the MyBubble Page to hide them or better still a switch in the options to turn them off altogether… Other than that I would like to congratulate you pn a much cleaner layout… The comma thing will take a bit of adjusting to… I am familiar with this from some forums… but once again a user becomes accustomed to certain practice when using a site… habit…and sudden changes like this are never easy to adapt to even if neccessary

    Bigger and clearer fonts are definitely welcome though….

    Hi
    What I meant was a future consideration…MORE spaces for our artwork on the right side.
    If you post T-shirts….You are limited to 6 only spaces for art….and then 6 t-shirt spots.
    If you do not post T-shirts…You get 9 spots only, for art. I feel that there should be more spaces for the artwork on our Public profile page.
    My site is centered on front. The lopsided view comes when you see the left…full of the groups we are in, and then our journal entries. The addition of extra framed art is used by many of us, to get our work On to the front page…This makes it lopsided…as the additions are on the left side. I was trying to say…I feel more space for artwork should be allotted on the right side of the page.

    I have SeaMonkey set for a minimum font size of 11. It makes the page wide. It shouldn’t. I’m looking and I see nothing that should expand beyond the edge just because of larger fonts. I think there’s some less-than-optimal styling here. Are some page elements being sized in terms of characters? Maybe use % of the container instead. That should make the scaling much more adaptive to the user’s display, like HTML should be.

  • johna

    johna

    Just looked at http://images-0.redbubble.net/stylesheets/1242188594/new/layout.css. Looks like a lot of measurements expressed in “em”. That’s probably why it’s overscaling when people set larger font sizes.

  • Debbie Sandersfeld

    @RiSH – The watchlist length is a bug that we’re fixing today. As for Opera, they seem to treat the widths of our activity feed a little weird, I’ll see if I can fix up the alignments for you soon.

    @johna – The site is deliberately set with em values for layout so that it does scale with the text size without breaking the layout. We have a lot of key elements to the site that don’t play well with scaling just the text, so things are setup to scale based on the font size. In the future we’re looking at a slightly more flexible/fluid version of the layout, but that wasn’t in the scope of this release.

    I did check the site in Seamonkey, and it should all still work fine with your minimum font size, it’s just a bit wider.

    I really do not like the new implementation of the group messages. It was much better for sending out announcements via a bubblemail. Now it is hardly noticeable when you get a group message if you are a member of more than a few groups.

    Hi guys…......I have a glitch with the new overview page…....In the groups box it always says, “you have 3 messages”.........I have viewed all of those messages and counter came back from “you have 12 messages” to only 3. Can we have a button to delete them and or reset so that I dont continually get the you have 3 messages dialog box.
    Cheers

    thankyou thankyou thankyou! i love what you have done with the My Groups panel. It is just what I wanted and I no longer get frustrated when logging in and looking at all the activity and wondering where to start! Good on you:)

    I use Mozilla Firefox as my browser, and wonder if that is my problem in seeing my group homepages showing the photos in rows of 8 and 4, instead of 6 and 6. What can I do to change this, since the rows appear unfinished to me. I liked the 6 and 6 that I had before. I also have a widescreen 19” monitor and wonder if that is causing some of this trouble.

    I saved my Art and Activity Feed pages with all their accompanying files and found a modification to the styling for the section_wrap class that fixed the width issue. Just change the width from 96em to auto.

    If anyone using a Gecko-based browser (Firefox, SeaMonkey, etc.) doesn’t want to wait for RB to make that change, just add the following to your userContent.css file…

    @-moz-document url-prefix(http://www.redbubble.com/) {
    #section_wrap {
    width:auto ! important;
    margin:0 auto;
    padding:0 2em 1em 2em;
    text-align:left;
    clear:both;
    position: relative;
    }
    }

    (I included the entire styling with the modification. Not sure if it will work with just the width attribute but it might.)

    I have a suggestion, on the My Art page (the one where we see our own art and view counts etc), could you add an “order by” option? I would like to have it easier to see my art with the most number of views, rather than having to flip through pages and write down the counts.
