RedBubble

The Power of Encouragement

Welcome to 2009. To kick off the new year, l want to reflect a bit on how constructive comments can encourage members to create new work and grow artistically.

The majority of the member comments on my artwork pages are less than 100 characters in length (including spaces). That’s not a lot of information, but they do provide just the right amount of inspiration.

The best comments motivate members to create more work or to see their existing work in a new way. Comments are also incredibly valuable if they come from peers that work in similar mediums. In my case, printmaking is a niche medium, so comments from other printmakers regarding technique are always welcomed. And at a visceral level, comments simply feel good; they bond us to the larger RedBubble community.

Comments can also help guide art buyers. For example, your comment can link to an artwork or written work on RedBubble that’s similar in topic or aesthetic. When linking, it’s best to link text that best describes the image or subject matter that the member will see post-click. Here’s a real-world example:

“What a wonderful photograph of the Perth waterscape. I especially like the way you highlighted the horizon and ramp/dock – great technique using the prolonged exposure. Check out this photograph of Perth by EOS20.”

The “medium-plus-subject” link structure is helpful to readers and search engines alike. You can use this tactic on your personal websites and blogs in order to send visitors to your RedBubble pages (or other websites).

RedBubble typically sees a dip in website chatter during the holidays, but the silence ends as members return from holiday, post new work, and reconnect with those they follow. If you would like to share a favorite comment or a positive feeling that you had as a result of a comment on your work(s), please post it below!

Enjoy the New Year. We look forward to viewing and commenting on your new work in the coming weeks.

Regards,
Jason

Not a comment exactly, but it made my day. A redbubble member bought a t-shirt and sent me a bubblemail saying that he knew his girlfriend would love it. I like the idea that art contributes to the sum of happiness in the world.

And I would agree with Crystal, this post encourages me to comment more thoughtfully when I can contribute something, or at least try to.

Agree with Susan, not only do comments help bolster the spirit and give a person the will to continue, but when someone buys something and it gives them so much joy, you have to feel good about that!!! Gotta love this place, it’s the best!

Thanks for that Jason – I have begun putting various links in my comments including a thank you linked to a person’s profile who has favourited my image without leaving any comment – I feel, in return, the least I can do is recognise their favour and hopefully direct people to their site. Links are highly underused I feel (and I’d much rather a subtle link than a whacking great shot inserted of someone else’ssimilar image underneath my own which some people like to do!! I have no problem with a ‘hey this shows a wonderful perspective on the bridge … check out my take on this icon “here” ... but the huge in-your-face full sized ‘advertisement’ for their shot on my page is a bit much!!!)

Well I would like to say thank-you to Bellmusker
for her comments on my journal entry here
I am in Darwin Australia and I have an exhibition in Melbourne but on the opening night I had no
way of knowing what it looked like or how it was going. Bellmusker painted a wonderful picture of the evening and I got feedback about my work. We didn’t know each other prior to this so it was such a wonderful thing to do ..and although I didn’t sell anything on the night, knowing someone appreciates my work makes it all worth while…

I love RedBubble and must admit I’ll soon need to seek treatment for my addiction – as wonderful as it is!! I love the wonderful community of artistic and creative interest and the warmth and inclusiveness of this site. The work on this site is of a wonderfully high standard, but to me there is a collaboration that stands head and shoulders above: Earhart Chappel Take the time to bathe your eyes in their visual feast, read their story and leave them some comments.
May you all have a creative, prosperous and bountiful 2009 : )

    Interesting journal, Jason. Thank you.

Since its inception, RedBubble has given many people the opportunity to grow as they pursue their artistic endeavours. The positive interaction amongst members has lead to others not so fortunate in society benefitting.

Comments are great and they bolster the confidence and provide inspiration to those who give them and receive them – whether it be on art, journals, writing or in the forums. Activities within RedBubble’s groups are providing inspiration for members, too.

Jason, the comments I’ve received have been great. The two that stand out for me have been received by personal email from RedBubble co-founders Peter Styles and Martin Hosking. I trust they don’t mind me posting this.

In reference to the support given by RedBubble towards the Australian Photographers Alliance in their efforts to raise awareness and monies in aid of an Australian charity, Peter said this:

    “Go for it!”

In regard to an article I recently wrote about RedBubble, Martin said this:

“Loved your article about RedBubble and your ongoing support/humour/contributions to RedBubbble.”

With comments like that coming from the top brass, it’s no wonder RedBubble is flourishing.

    Kudos to RB.

I am a new member and to have people comment and favourite the work was really wonderful to me, especially when I had been very isolated for a long time where no one got to see my work. The contact gave me energy to upload more and I am having fun making calendars now, as I like the juxtaposition of images. It also gave me a chance to view other peoples work and comment on their work and just experience the great joy of other peoples experience and vision of the world. So I am very pleased to have joined redbubble, and all the best for 2009.

This is an excellent start to 2009. A while back, I wrote a Journal item on this very subject. Sometimes I feel lost for words when viewing someone’s work, or I can’t add anything else to what’s already been said by others. Other times, the simple process of commenting makes me analyse just why I like a particular work, and it tells me something about myself.

In terms of comments on my own work, I need go no further than Rosa Cobos for someone who provides incredibly insightful comments, such as this: Yes…..!!!!
    Perfect.
It is purely Taoist..if not for the design..you know the Tai´Chi design…dont´you?
In it there exists the dichotomy but it is fluently and re-animating mutually the energies. So the void is engendering the plenitude of the white and in the white there is the seed of the void. Here is all bi-dimensional. But the essence is there….trying to tell us that all that we know…comes from darkness….nurturing darkness. This is quite mystical….. yes meditative )
. Go and see Rosa. Not only will you meet an extraordinary bubbler, but you’ll probably receive a hug as well :)

    Very nice post.

One thing I’ve tried to do since I joined RB is spend at least 15-20 minutes every couple of days looking through recent (not popular) art and leaving as many comments as I can.

I personally would like to receive more comments (whether they are praise or criticism) and I I think that leaving comments on art without large numbers of existing comments is a good way to encourage this.

The kind words of encouragement from your peers, always prompts me to log on to Redbubble daily. This, as well as the insatiable prospect of finding and viewing new and wondrous work that I simply must give high praise to and add to my ‘favourites’, like a squirrel secretly stashing away nuts for the winter.

Happy New Year to you all and let’s hope that 2009 brings us all hope, artistic vision, support, joy and the chance to learn and grow together.

Well my year finished off badly and looks like the new one is starting off the same way. No one even views my photographs anymore, if they are not seen then comments can’t be made.

Now don’t run off to my page and start looking and commenting because that, to me, would just be fake. I am not writing this to get people to my page but as an illustration of the original post.

I am also a member of another photography website where I also now get no views (or maybe one or two) and no comments. Hence for the last 6+ months I have taken very few photos and posted even less.

As an example: the last 8 images I have posted (on RB) have received 38 views in total that is less than 5 per images. Of these images, 3 have a total of 7 comments (3 of those from me) that leaves 4 comments using a total of 16 words (avg 4 words per comment). Thank you to those that took time to comment.

To quote Gerry Danen above “The flip side, lack of comments, is discouragement. Just by a void, an experience can become negative.”

As I said earlier I am not here fishing for views and comments, look, don’t look, comment, don’t comment, it makes no difference to me any more.

I am guilty of looking and not commenting but when you view art that has 30 or 40 comments already the last thing the artists wants is another “nice image” or “well done”. I feel no way qualified to be making critical comments of anyone’s works but I know what I like and if the work hasn’t had 101 comments then I will tell the artist what I like about their work.

For those that have viewed my work (or may do in the future), if my photography is CRAP then PLEASE tell me. But don’t just say “that’s crap” tell me where I have gone wrong and, if you can, suggest what I may do to fix my mistakes.

I would have liked to have posted this anonymously but alas everyone now knows who has had a bitch session. So if the RB hierarchy wish to expel me …... so be it.

    Happy New Year.

Jason, you ‘hit the nail on the head’ in regard to the comments, as they do go a long, long way to bolstering one’s self confidence, our will to get out and stretch our boundaries(and our hours in a day) and find new things to shoot; actually hone our skills, by learning from our peers here on RB (both by uploaded examples and constructive and supportive comments and BMs) and the ‘icing on the cake’ is when people, both from outside the bubble community (those that just log on to purchase) and especially our colleagues from the RB community appreciate our work so much as to make a purchase of some kind.
By the number of views and comments made it also give us a guide as to what sort of images/artwork/writing is more popular.
Happy 2009 to ALL the RB staff and community and I hope and pray that it will be a very creative, prosperous and ground breaking year for ALL of us.

A very timely Journal, Jason, as comments are most definitely a big boost to ones confidence, and an incentive to do better, try harder, and, often, to try something an artist may not have even thought about.

I’ve been priviledged to receive some lovely comments from RB members whose work and opinions I admire very much. It’s hard to choose which comments have been the most appreciated, but the following one is definitely one of the most bautiful and encouraging:

billyboy left this comment on a calendar I made:

”. . . this is a beautiful calendar. It`s not like the non-fractalius roses are anything less, but these are simply different and make a lovely variation from what we`re used to. Have you put it in a calendar category? I think if you can get it noticed it will sell.
Wonderful job of selecting and processing!”

I had made a calendar exclusively of roses (I sold two copies of it) and then did another one of roses on which I had used the Fractalius plugin. The above comment was made by Bill on the Fractalius one (he left an equally beautiful compliment on the “plain” rose one, too) – I value Bill’s comments on my work because he is such a meticulous image-maker himself and his comments are always positive, often very helpful, and frequently contain a laugh! LOL, I haven’t sold a copy of this calendar, but . . . who knows!

I always to try to tell an artist why i like their image and how it makes me feel, although sometimes, I’m only repeating what others before me have said. I always appreciate it if, in the process of commenting, someone would like to know how I did something – I consider that to be high praise of my pics.

Thank you, RB, for having such a wonderful community-minded site. I’ve learnt a lot here and hope that I have been able to help a few people along the way; I enjoy the opportunity to see the fabulous work of artists whom I wouldn’t see if not for RB.

I hope 2009 is a year of continued wonder for all who come here. Live long and prosper, RB!

I am so thankful to RB community (and my little circle of new friends, especially) for all that!!!

I believe the right sort of encouragement goes along way tohelping others improve or just stay motivated, instead of collecting lots of hits I choose to collect people who give me an honest opinion on my work and who I can encourage in turn, a bit like real life.
I have recently joined a group exceptional-ekphrasis-group where we show our work that has been inspired by other peoples work and have links between them.
I often find that I see a picture and want to write a poem about it or a picture comes to mind when I read someone elses words. It is a good place to meet others who do this.
I have recently been linking my own pictures to my written work not realising they did before, in order to get them published.
But I like very much inspiring others to continue to work or giving them new ideas. Trace xx

Thank you Jason, for your insightful commentary…I have had a fabulous year on RedBubble, and I would like to express heartfelt thanks to all the wonderful people who take the time to comment on my work every single day, and many of whom have now become great friends…an example of this would be my painting Grateful
Although as you’ve stated, a full comment is defintely more desirable, a single word can do a lot to build confidence, and sometimes you are so blown away by an art work, that you become inarticulate, and can’t find adjectives that would do justice to how you feel about the work…
RedBubble is without parallel…there is nothing like it…I look forward to 2009…new friends new challenges…keep up the great work….

Great insight….......and very true. I consider myself very low on the totem pole of photographic art. There has been many times in the past ( and i think even now ) when I have seriously considered moving on to other interests that I may ,or may not , do well with, for a simple reason: I am seriously lacking in confidence and am always perpetually afraid of screwing up. Maybe I should address the underlying problem..ha, ha. In any event every comment that I have received has been both a blessing as well as a learning experience to me….........some have been spectacular but all have meant more, in many ways, than I could ever express. And I know that I am not alone with this thought.

So, ya, Here’s to Redbubble and the awesome community that it has created.
And thanks for accepting me and my images, and allowing me to be a part of it.

and HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.

As a new member I have neglected to thank members for their nice comments. I will make every effort in the future to be more responsive. as for comments as I see it. They can help to inspire however, I do not count on them. I post to share what I see and look at my images very hard and ask, is this the best that I can post? If it is, then some one just might buy it. My confidence comes from within and comments are just gravy in the big scheme of life. Local camera club, reading, and attending photo seminars all contribute to my confidence.
    Happy New Year to all

Happy New Year, redbubble and everyone associated with! I want to thank redbubble for accepting my art, and everyone that has left a comment, because it is so inspirational. I have changed the way I look at art, as well as my prospective on life since joining redbubble. I would especially like to thank Catterpillar and Tim Denny for being “in my corner” so to speak. May God bless all!

I had written about encouragement several years ago and posted the writing to my redbubble page. You will find it in my writing but I will list it here as well.

“Encourage Someone and Become Their Stepping Stone”

Be an Encourager, look for good in someone else. You never know when your words of encouragement will be the stepping stone for someone. Nora Caswell

Here is the message that I wrote yesterday in my journal. I wrote to Everyone on Red Bubble. I will post it here so that all can see it.

I was just thinking about all of the gifted people on Redbubble.com and thinking about how much each one has to offer the world. I sincerely hope that each person that is a member would be totally blessed in 2009.
    Happy New Year!

Hi there! New here at RB (joined12/2008).
I do have some sympathy for the folks who are pining because few people look at their work. The first thing I learned here is how incredibly large this site is. After I uploaded my first image, I immediately went to the community page, activity tab, to make sure that it had taken. In just the time it took me to navigate to that tab, my image was already on page two, and with another click of the mouse, it was on page three, buried under an onslaught of images and comments entered “in the last 1 minute”! One can really be a needle in a haystack here, as elsewhere on the net.
I am neither surprised at this, nor disappointed. After all, the internet is a very large place. I work in the IT industry, and the conventional wisdom is that if you want to get any substantial number of hits on your web site, you need to advertize it heavily in some non-internet medium. Few people will find you on their own.
Although I have been doing photography for almost two decades, promoting my work is something that I am just now beginning to do. What I am learning is that promoting one’s art is very mych a personal, one-on-one proposition. I don’t expect to be “discovered” just by posting things on the internet. That would be an unrealistic expectation. Personal networking is necessary.

I love to get comments – good is great, but I also like to get constructive feedback from peers, a great way to learn. Often, working artists can be quite isolated, and the Red Bubble community is a great counter to this! Rock on, RB artists and a happy and creative 2009!!!

Happy New 2009 to one and all.
I am new to RB and am already enjoying meeting people through the website. Because it reaches the world, RB gives my art a chance to be viewed by the many and the response has been very positive and supportive. I also find the RB site and Bubblesite very user-friendly and am having fun uploading daily. Plus having a place to write a daily journal and share writing is great too, so inspiring and creative to have a venue for all of this under one roof.

Thanks Jason and the Bubblers for bringing our artwork to the world at large. This encourages my creative spirit and makes me smile…

Best wishes and merriment for 2009, Kamalani

I wish everyone at RB a happy, prosperous and safe 2009.

Reading the comments on comments has been an adventure in itself. New to Red Bubble and essentially new to photography, visits to my site and comments of almost any kind are appreciated. It appears to take some time to be recognized .. but it is great to share with people of all ages from different places and with different points of view .. personally and visually. Thanks for the opportunity to be part of the Red Bubble story in 2009. and I am going to check out Rosa Cobbs … I guess that is how it works!

That is why I love redbubble so much, meeting other people you can have great conversations with or just share comments. There is a real feeling of connection. It’s got such a great community. I wish my myspace page was the same! It is so empty by comparison.

True, well I always like to say something that adds something although sometimes my brain is tired and uncreative. Bu I like it when others add something in their comments to my understanding of my work, because it is often a partly subconscious process and also because we all have different eyes.

Ditto on what Jason said! I’m not a professional photographer yet, but I aspire to be as I am making it my career. Not an easy task, but I do find the comments very inspiring and they are what motivates me to keep going.
I’m so glad I found my way across RB. It rocks!

Hey Jason, I like the way you used black lettering on this white background, it pops! the flush left margin makes it easy to read, great choice. your bold lettering in the title really grabbed my attention and I was eager to read more. love the tags! :)

seriously, comments are a great way to communicate to the artist about their artwork. sometimes a ‘great shot’ or ‘nice job’ is just someone’s way of expressing a shorten version of what they really wanted to say about the artwork. I welcome all comments. have a super 2009 everyone!!!!!

Wow, just back from a trip so may be the last one to post! Happy New Year to everyone and may 2009 see your creativity blossom even more than it probably has already.
I agree with the view that positive comments are positive and no comment is kinda negative. Nevertheless, photography can be a lonely and selfish pursuit of pleasure and so a lack of comment does not make for a bad picture.

    Jason you are so right.
I’ve only been here for a week and have had lots of views and heaps of wonderful comments. I feel really inspired by the comments and so happy when someone favorites my work. I like to look at the work of people who comment but sometimes there’s not enough time to leave lots of comments. A very kind and friendly bubbler who obviously has lots of people watching her, gave me a wrap in a journal entry. That really made my day. This is a really special community.

Happy New Year to you all,

what a great year we have ahead of us, difficult times yes with all this global economic stuff bringing us all down but as artists we have the ability to brighten up this world we live in by creating wonderful images and posting them for the world to see.

Be kind in 2009 and spread the love throughout RB, critique positively and go out of your way to make more comments than you did in 2008.

Yes it is great to receive comments on your work, it really inspires you. What I love best about Redbubble is the contact with others who share your obsessions! Feedback is so important and looking at what inspires others in their work is very interesting, broadens your horizons and brings beauty to your life.

The great thing about the comments about my work on redbubble has been that the person has really contemplated the work and thought about it. Even when you have an exhibition you don’t usually get that kind of feedback. It feels very encouraging and safe. We artists all need encouragement. It also inspires and motivates me to work harder and do better when I see other artists’ beautiful work.

I have to say that as a fairly new member, I have been blown away by the sheer scale of amazing talent found here on RB. And their work has often left me speechless in my appreciation!
After reading your comments Jason, I will endeavour to be more encouraging. Thankyou. When I have had comments on my writing, it has been most helpful.
Merci Beaucoup to all of you Beautiful Friends who have taken the time to read, digest and comment.
    Much love to you…

I love constructive comments, not just praise. Comments that offer tips, improvements and opportunities for me to grow as an artist.

As I’m visiting people’s work, firstly I’m there because there was something in the image that caused me to click through. Secondly, I want to say how I felt about that but I also want to ask questions so I can learn and to offer comments so that the other person can grow. I think praise is good but praise doesn’t help us to grow. So if you are popping past any of my work, please feel free to give a constructive critique. I’ve got broad shoulders and the pain that comes from someone noticing an imperfection is what drives me to grow and improve. :)) Hope that makes sense. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to comment.

I love the comments, i have made some very good friends from people who comment, It is nice to know someone likes your pictures even the rough ones (Pictures i mean.) I have said this before on the Journal but i,ll say it again. I really want to thank everyone who has commented on my pictures, i have never received a bad one as yet. My picture of Flight received the most comments with viewings totalling 70,000. That made me think i,d done something really special. Every picture is art to someone and thats the way i look at it, i am no art critic but i know when i like something and comment accordingly. Thank you.
