Perspective ... in the midst of fear

Hello!

It’s been a wild couple of weeks on the global financial markets – and here in San Francisco there’s a palpable sense of fear … bordering on panic. It’s easy to get swept up in all of this … and I don’t want to downplay the hardship that many of us are already facing but I spent the weekend getting some perspective. I went for a walk through a magnificent Redwood forest just north of San Francisco (image by Ben Messina).

These magnificent trees are hundreds if not thousands of years old. Silent, graceful and still. It reminded me that many of the most valuable things we enjoy in life are free … the air we breath, the smile of a child, the sun on our face. What have we done to ‘earn’ these things?

There is a richness to life not captured by the Dow Jones Industrial Average …

And for those with a sense of history we have faced far more uncertain times in the past – and pulled through. I listened to the famous we will never surrender speech by Winston Churchill on the weekend. We’ve still got it pretty easy all things considered.

As a website RedBubble is not really about the numbers – it’s more about the relationships and people (this is why we only rarely publish graphs and stats). But given that all the numbers in the world seem to be going ‘south’, I wanted to publish a few today that go the other way.

Since February 2007 RedBubble has shipped over 123,900 items to more than 70 countries. That’s quite amazing. Since 1 Jan this year we’ve sent out over 30,500 sales notification e-mails. Congratulations to you all!

Here’s a few graphs on how sales and activity have grown since Feb 2007 (each dot represents one week).

Weekly sales

Weekly comments

Group activity

Of course these graphs don’t really tell us what’s really going on in the site … they don’t tell us about the friendships formed … the new art created … the lives changed. But they do remind us that in the midst of doom and gloom life does go on. Trees grow. The sun rises.

It’s not all doom and gloom.

Ciao,

-Peter

It’s so often the small things in life that makes us the happiest. I saw a doumentary recently and the host was in some grasslands in awe of the abundant insect life, butterflies etc and said the thing he most enjoyed was laying down and listening to the hum and smelling the sunny, grassy, smells. It reminded me of the joys of this when I was a child. I thought, which would I prefer, if I had the money to buy 10 designer handbags or to be blissful soaking up nature. Its not even a contest, I’ll take nature anyday.

We had a courageous, upbeat, inspiring older Redbubble member pass away a few days ago – the outpouring of love, sympathy and support that has flooded in from the RB ‘family’ has put the world’s ‘doom and gloom’ into perspective, and confirms your message Peter. I really like redbubble and I totally agree with you and was thinking the very same way. There still are beautiful things in nature and in life. I saw THE most beautiful double rainbow this past weekend. A very close friend of mine has been doing exhaustive investigative research on the economic situation and not on ABC because all the main news, paper and others are all owned by an elite group who are the manipulators of this mess. I am not trying to bring anyone down. The situation in the US is much deeper than just another dip in the market. I for one will have to walk away from my house within 2 years. If you think of your children if you have one or some and what they will be facing you might want to find out more about this situation. Try OpEdNews.com for some eye opening information, please. It is a time like now that appreciating those wondrous things is essential but paying attention and awake to what is happening is as important if not more. I apologize if I bummed people out. Redbubble is a great escape. I rarely say much and alwys try my best to play nice. I sincerely hope that the US can fix itself and try to undo some of what it has done to the rest of the planet.

You just wrote about what is truly important in life. I thank you for putting it into such perfect perspective…
I lost a dear friend today in a car wreck (age 55)... and as I sat and wondered about life, I thought of all the panic and fear over lost money, savings and jobs. Those can be replaced with time and hard work, but a friend cannot… they are only remembered in memories and photographs. We have to rethink what is truly important in our lives..

And for Maria & Rhonda ~ I hope I’m not out of line in saying this but try not to mourn their deaths it’s much less painful to celebrate their lives and they’d probably prefer that too. It definitely helps you get through the grieving process. May they rest in peace. I’m new to Red Bubble and I’m lovin’ it so far! The people have all been really kind & helpful. Anyway, the stock market drama is something to be concerned about (for some) but it’s not all that matters and hopefully some people that read this will realize that finally. The best things in life are free! It is great to remember that. It is good to remember that more often, not just when everything seems bleak.
I can guess, but not imagine what the fall out of recent economic events will be for me over the next few years. I am sure there will be a few. I know that for some already this has been devastating and empathize.
However it is done and we move forward regardless.
I hope for a long term positive outcome after the initial pain has gone. Where, we have a more global understanding of conservation vs waste. If every dollar becomes more valuable at a global level, maybe we will actually remember the value of money at a global level. This planet has been crying out for us to slow down our consumption, maybe we will now be forced to do so.
My fear is that right now and in the near future we forget our humanity, while we need to focus on ourselves. Here’s to remembering that this will effect everyone on every level, those that were living with very little before will still be living with less than most, still vulnerable and still need what help we can offer.

redbubble, compared to the ‘panic’ you are experiencing in sanfrancisco pales somewhat in comparison to the the last couple of weeks in darfur, afghanistan, pakistan, swathes of iraq, palestine, tibet, nagaland, hiv infested s.a., and milton keynes.

really at the end of the day i understand that financial collapse in sanfranciso might be worth wrrying about in some respects,, but i’d be much more panicked about the possibility of john mccain becoming president of the world and starting third world war.

that could really devalue your investment and fuck up your retirement plans.

Seriously, if that spike was Christmas, what sold? Cards? Christmas type cards? T-shirts? Could we have another graph showing a breakdown? Here, we are noticing that people can’t invest in property, banks or stocks and shares so Art seems a good investment as they get the benefit of something to enjoy as well. Might not be a bad time for all of us. We’re all in the same boat and yes, there is more to life than money.

Hi Peter. Bronwyn and I visited Mount Macedon a few weeks ago. It was a pleasant day, the sun was shining and the views were beautiful.

Just as we started our return journey back to Melbourne at dusk, we saw two mobs of kangaroos grazing by the roadside and a wombat moving at wombat pace.

We had a ball that day and discovered new things that were within an hour of home.

    Cheers.

Not much more I could say other than thank you for reminding us what is really important.

We are all born with God-given, unique traits and skills. But as with all possibilities they will remain unrealized unless they are developed, nurtured and put into practice.

You just captured what RB is all about!!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking an active roll in making our RB home a better place!!!!

I am reminded of a poem that my dad wrote many years ago….

    From the tree
    comes the seed.
    And through the
    seed the tree
    lives on.
    Through loving
    and sharing, the
    tree is eternal.

Not to long ago I’ve walked through those same trees and like the cathedrals of Europe you step out of the everyday world and into an ethereal realm. Not too hard to forget worldly problems :)

trees trees I love those trees, there’s more to them than roots and leaves, they take the poison from the breeze, and give to us the air we breath. Which is worth more than money.

These magnificent trees are hundreds if not thousands of years old. Silent, graceful and still….

I did these two journal postings few weeks ago, reflecting some part of your posting Peter:

    A rather arboraceous page

    and

Can you imagine our world without trees?

As far as I’m concerned, I feel very fortunate to notice and appreciate nature’s beauty in whatever shape/s (some people don’t and some take it for granted). If I didn’t I would probably go insane :))

we all need to look at the root causes and address them, trees are something we are all dependant on. Art is a great way of communicating this, it can say more than words can express and has no language barriers.

I couldn’t be creative without nature around me. Yes, the financial situation is bad but a small deviation away from world issues is needed, and my art is my deviation. God deals us a hand and it is up to us what cards we play.

Peter, Thank you for a giving us a glimpse of the Eternal Trees, I once in the 70’s lived under these giants in Felton,CA. They taught me Courage in times of adversity, If you have self doubts you only need to walk under these giants to realize they were left as a reminder . They have survived plagues , the rise and fall of civilizations , kings and dictators , war and famine . They are living testament to survival of the spirit.

Living in Dayton, OH you get used to financial crisis. We’ve been one of the hardest hit cities in America by jobs being shipped overseas and (according to Forbes) are one of the fastest dying cities in America. I rent, so I haven’t experienced the foreclosures others have dealt with (though there are a lot of buildings for sale in Dayton) and I try not to live beyond my meager means (only using the cash I have rather than borrowing money from creditors). What I find odd about the “financial crisis” in Wall Street, is the positive things it has done for the American economy. In Ohio, the price of gas has dropped to around $2.60/gallon (something that hasn’t been seen in the past couple of years). The US dollar is stronger (compared to other World currency) than it’s been in years (the exchange rate between the British Pound Sterling and the US Dollar hasn’t been like this since 2003). The crisis has also dropped the price of oil per barrel below $100. So, while it may be hard to borrow money right now to buy a house or a new big screen TV, the American dollar is stronger and gas and oil are cheaper. Sometimes it’s best to look at the silver lining.

Your words are so true. Like the rest of the world South Africa is also suffering tremendous financial strain. The Rand is weakened, their is political uncertainty and poverty results into more crime. The people who don’t feel the financial pinch is few and far between. What makes everything worse is witnessing the suffering of others since no matter how bad things are going for you – there are always people worse off. YET through all of these things the best and the greatest moment of each day is to pick my child up from his day care and his happiness to see me is overwhelming and I know for now I am the centre of his life and his love and admiration is just limitless. Looking forward everyday to hearing the word “Mamma!” because for that second the world seems like a great place.

    Hi
    That was really lovely Peter

I have come along to RB at the tea time of my life – I have been making craft and art since I was 6 years old – I am almost 60 now – I have no love for money, because it is not the most important thing in life.

As an Artist I am now losing the use of my Arms and my eyes which are the 2 most important things to me – to be able to continue with what I love best.

Our paths are already marked out by those who ‘know best’ .............It’s a good thing that rich or poor we will all share the same fate one day if those who ‘know best’ do not wake up…....Having an artistic nature is a gift to treasure, At least we are able to see the world in a better way and help others maybe to paint a better picture for the future.

Thanks for RB it will become my nesting place.

This is so true that the best things in life are often not about money and it’s a shame sometimes that humanity seems so focused on making more and more money that it forgets to look at itself and see that the same beauty that exists in walking through a peaceful forest exists inside each person, each friendship and every act of thoughtfulness or generousity.

Peter: thanks for showing your worldly wisdom and documenting our business sense. I’ m
normally in Wilderness; so chaos is normal for me. But you are right about fear and don’t go there. During wild forest crown fire in Colorado, those that panicked ran off a cliff – my crew walked out alive. All human have to do is adapt better than the wooley mammoth or sabre-tooth cat !
