Beauty Continued

One of the remarkable things about RedBubble is the fascinating conversations that take place. For me none have been more interesting than the responses to last week’s post on beauty.

At that time I argued that beauty was currently out of fashion. I felt it had been superseded by an “ugly utility”.

Reading the responses I realise I had missed two things. Firstly: that there is an attitude that can craft beauty out of the seemingly mundane – think of the bricklayer who builds with elegance and precision. Secondly: that there is a grace that can allow us to see beauty in all aspects of life. Under the microscope the ordinary is seen in awesome wonder.

People responded with quotes and comments which capture these perspectives and which I could not hope to better:

“Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.” ~ Confucius quoted by Solefield

“Finding the beauty in the banal is the true secret to life.
This is where beauty and happiness cross paths.” ~ mick8585

“The most important human endeavor is the striving for morality in our actions. Our inner balance and even our very existence depend on it. Only morality in our actions can give beauty and dignity to life.” ~ Albert Einstein quoted by Dyle Warren

“Grace makes beauty out of ugly things.
Grace finds beauty in everything.
Grace finds goodness in everything” ~ U2 quoted bu Sue Hodge

“Beauty can be found in nearly all things, by those who have the clarity of vision and the feeling ability to perceive it.” ~ Steve Hook

“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched, they must be felt with the heart” ~ Helen Keller quoted by Kathie Nichols

“For every beauty there is an eye somewhere to see it.
For every truth there is an ear somewhere to hear it.
For every love there is a heart somewhere to receive it.”
-Ivan Panin
 quoted by LindaR

“The human soul needs beauty more than bread.” ~ DH Lawrence quoted by Dawne Olson

“Beauty is the brother of love. Both are impossible to harness.” Tony Elliot

A friend jockingly said of me; “Beauty is skin deep, but with you Don, ugly goes all the way to the bone!” I know he was joking, but some words do stick in the memory. Beauty is all around us, all the time, we just need to be still a few moments and consider it. Then it comes to us in waves of pleasure; birds singing, wind blowing, clouds sailing, trees swaying, rain falling, water running, planes soaring, children laughing. Ahhhh beauty! Don.

I was away for the first and am enjoying the resurrection !

We live in an instant gratification world which is at odds with beauty.Often its the result of beauty that people seek not the experience of it..Which in itself degrades .. beauty.Words like beauty…love…soul …are all used indiscriminately yet we all find them some what hard to define. The thing is do we have to define something each of us already knows ? Those 3 words emote much in us yet they are often abused and therefore subtracting from their purest intent. But when you read words you can recognize someone who is connected with those 3 words…and someone who is not,Beauty walks hand in hand with honesty and honesty is the true reflection of yourself…... and no..i am not drinking !!..lol

Beauty, like perfection, are manmade concepts that don’t really exist. They are simply idiosynchratic perceptions and views. We have as much chance on either agreeing or defining what beauty is, as we do the meaning of life.

I agree with Robyn. Beauty is in everything, and its up to us to capture and share it. Artists, musicians, photographers, sculptures etc. The freelance workers capture beauty to help the 9-5 workers find peace in thier time off, or entertain them via billboards and mp3 players on thier way to and from work. All of us making the world go round.

“beauty” – it’s what all artists respond to and try to express. As all are different, the things that we find as beautiful are different one from another. If we didn’t find things that are beautiful then we wouln’t respond and try to capture our reaction to it (whatever “it” is) – and I include writing, movie making etc. as well as the standard visual arts.

Beauty may be a trick of light on a mundane drab scene/object and suddenly it’s beauty is revealed, to us, and we try to capture that. Or a story heard and because of a current emotional state it strikes you as beautiful – and we respond.

Art is, to me, the attempt to capture beauty.

    Yada yada yada, cheers !:)

  • Arletta

Beauty is something you have to be willing to see. You sit in a diner and you see the reflection of yourself, transformed into some other, ethereal being. The waitresses are dancing spots of color, swaying to and fro, the gleam of the metal off the coffee maker becomes a distant, beckoning star. You turn to your companion and say “Look at that. Isn’t it beautiful?” and they look out and go “But, it’s raining. How is that beautiful?”

Already, you know in your heart that this is a question that has been answered repeatedly,

; but, not all of us like rain, so you say “No, no, I meant the reflection.”

“Reflection?” they say. They look at it. “What are you a f…ng idiot? It’s just a reflection. Hey!” they yell at a bright spot, who sways over to see what’s up. ”... do you believe this f…ng idiot? Thinking reflections in a window can be beautiful.”

They both titter and said companion continues. “It’s just a reflection, dim bulb. It’s nothing special. Reflections can’t be beautiful.”

And, then, you realize that, yes, they are exactly right. Because, to them, once they have narrowed the definition of reflection,

    and the definition of beauty

to what they’d feel comfortable with being seen enjoying in public, then, oh yes .. to them a reflection, especially one in a mundane diner

    !

    cannot be beautiful.

They have eyes, they have thoughts, they can see beauty.. where they want to, where they have been taught it is acceptable for persons of their race, sex, country, etc. to find beauty. So it is not that nothing can ever be beautiful to them, it is that they are handicapped.

Some people, fortunately, can at least see that beauty once a photographer, painter, or sketch artist comes along and isolates it on paper or canvas, though; and, that is something to be most thankful for.

    2) My longest friend, Mark Selikson, told me, when we were both young “You keep your eyes closed and think the world is filled with beauty. Then you open your eyes a little and see ugliness, so you think the world is filled with ugliness. Then you open your eyes all the way and see that the world is filled with beauty and ugliness and realize you can choose what to focus on and what to increase.” That has inspired me for 30 years. I reckon it could also be said with “beauty” and “ugliness” reversed in the first two parts and maybe instead of “ugliness” one could say something else, e.g. “beauty denied”.

Beauty is as faith is …the way you live your life..and belongs to all and is owed a debt by all .. and is seen differently by all. But if you try to find the beauty in All every day and in every way, your life will be beautiful!! And it is the the beauty of the innerself that we radiate that could possibly save our humanity and our planet.
