Site wide challenges on Redbubble
Hello!
Today we have released the functionality for “site-wide” challenges and we’ve opened challenges to all groups. You can see a summary of all challenges on this page and it’s great to see such a diversity of challenges popping up.
The thinking with site wide challenges is that this will allow us to create challenges outside of a group which anyone can enter. Initially we are going to be using this functionality to create the next RedBubble publication “The City”. Unlike the previous publications, In the Moment, Gaia and Compassion (the last of which is due for release relatively shortly), “The City” will be on a more streamlined process. Entries will be open for two weeks then one weeks voting and straight to publication.
We will have a process to incorporate writing into the publication (to be explained over the coming week).
The idea behind this streamlined process is to increase the frequency and accessibility of the publications. We will also make them available at a significantly lower price than the previous publications – to maximise the potential distribution.
The purpose behind the publications is to showcase the art and writing on RedBubble. We’ll operate them on a cost recovery basis and use them to market the artists on RedBubble. Obviously for the artists and writers that are published they are a great validation of the quality of their work (and its relevance to the topic).
We hope by increasing the frequency of publication to be able to showcase more of the work on RedBubble and to cover more themes.
So get your work ready for “The City” – which we aiming to kick off next Thursday.
Ciao for this week,
Peter
PS – The other odds and ends we released this week include more tweeks to the BubbleSite (including the ability to select a cover image for sets) and a whole bunch of technical stuff to keep the website up and going – we’ve had 30% growth over the last month which has strained our resources somewhat.

Indeed brilliant work and Ive just noticed the little note saying this is the price you pay and the buyer pays this much to the right of the image… Fantastic effort guys n gals
RedBubble replied
Well spotted – we often get customer service e-mails about this – so we thought we should provide this information to make things a little clearer.

My bubblesite has been a mess since yesterday…no images at all except for the featured ones….I hope it’s fixed today….I have clients looking at it…

Janis – can you please send an e-mail to suport with the details.

I like the new things with one exception. Would it not be better to have someone else nominate our work, be it photos or written works.
I, personally, find self promotion a bit difficult. I find nominating someone other than me a lot more rewarding and trust if my photos are good enough, someone else will come forward and tell you.
Self promotion has gone quite far here and I get a lot of Bmail that asks for me to vote in their behalf. Personally I find myself a bit taken back by this practice.

That’s an interesting suggestion … it’s sort of happening in some of the groups … see here for an example.

I’m so very excited about this new publication.and also your challenge sit and ideas!!! Awesome stuff…really!
Can we submit more than one entry to ‘The City’.
Also, may I congratulate you on making the decision to include written works this time.
There are so many incredibly talented and gifted writers among our number, that it is exciting that their works also be showcased.
Can’t wait to see the final result and order!!!!

Excellent idea regarding challenges and the next RB publication. Again, thank you for giving us extra space with the Bubblesites :)
As regards to prices, pleeeeaase prioritise the facility of being able to re-price all images in one go!! AND calendars!!!! for public sale :)
RedBubble replied
Both on the list … calendars will probably happen first …

As usual, RB rocks again! Thanks for all the hard work and thanks for the awesome community!

I am not sure I appreciate that all the photographers get is a credit next to their pictures, whilst redbubble take all the profits.
Nice way of creating a photo library for photo books, without having to pay the artist. Nice work, for redbubble and cheap tactics.
I will not be joining this con under these terms.
RedBubble replied
The artist controls the price – they can make as much or as little as they would like. And they keep all of their mark-up.

Amazing progress that RB has made. I think this site is wonderful, and what it offers artists of all kinds is a unique opportunity to promote one another as a community. Can’t wait for The City!

What a fantastic site this has turned out to be for all.
Thanks to all involved behind the scenes who keep us writers and artists begging for more.
A great debt of gratitude is owed to each and every one of you.
Thank you so much for all you do!!!!

Congratulations Redbubble, for catering to the EGO of many and for having a business model which allows you to publish a photobook/magazine without having to pay out a cent/penny for any of the images.
I did not expect this from you guys – there are enough of scrupulous people on the net without you being adding to the lsit.
I can not believe that so many people are happy to give away their valuable work for nothing, but a mere mention of their name, whilst redbubble is making huge profits without having to reward the photographer.
All the Photographers association are trying to stop this kind of exploration and get a fair reward to photographers.
Don’t be blinded by your ego of having your work published in a book, you are entitled to a fee for your image, BUT NEVER FOR NOTHING
Is redbubble not satisfied on making good profit from the cards, framing and mounting they are getting?
RedBubble replied
So with this new publication – RedBubble will NOT be making a profit. We are doing things on a cost recovery basis – as a promotional tool to help more people get their work out there. People WILL receive consideration for the inclusion of their image in the publication. And let me reiterate that the artist controls the price on RedBubble – they decide how much money they want to make.
C J Hummel - ...
The selction process is flawed too, as there are certain cliques who bubblemail each other to vote for them, leaving true artistic images never to be selected.
Perhaps you could invite some prominent celebs of the photography and photo editing world to be independent judges.
RedBubble replied
All judgement methods are flawed – even the judges will have a bias. The images are presented in random mix – with no artist details visible – our thinking is that this makes things as fair as possible.

Every time I visit Redbubble there are some interesting little changes … and I like them. Whether it be the ‘this is the price you pay and the buyer pays’, or adjusting positioning of the elements on the screen OR the subtle changes to the Category boxes in our bubbesites …. The work of the RB-techies always amazes me. (Personally, I find it a great way to learn about CSS, but that’s a whole other element!)
It’s no wonder RB gets so much international coverage across the WWW. I’ll be continuing my support and free advertising. It’s worth every few cents I get from sales of my photography and shirts!

You’re doing a great job, I have noticed that when I go to a challenge page it always freezes up though…figure it’s a glitch that will get worked out in time :-)

Many thanks for some of the techy tweaks in this week’s release, as I was having problems, with this site, which have since been rectified. So thank you very much for that. Congrats on a 30% growth this month. That is fabulous. Also great news on the challenges and the books. I’m so glad that I found red bubble 4 months ago. Cheers Elana.

RB is a great site, i’m glad a friend sent me here.
I look forward to seeing what is new on the home page on a daily basis.

Sounds way cool! A 30% increase in one month? A single month?? If that isn’t telling you that Red Bubble is doing it correctly right now, nada will. Google didn’t grow this fast! Hell, my BELLY didn’t grow this fast!!!!
Sophie Blain
I think it would be nice if the new challenge software told you where you placed. Obviously it tells you the winner and top ten, but it would be nice to know how close or far off you came :o)
