RedBubble

The Sharing's Sake

I wrote previously about the relationship between RedBubble and the wave of user generated content on the Internet.

This is not the only wave of which we are a part. I think we also participate in a “new art” that is accessible, anti-elitist and unmediated. And tremendous fun.

I am inspired by three related expressions of this type of art.

ImprovEverywhere coordinates extraordinary, democratic pieces of performance art where the art engages participants and audience in the most nourishing way.

Similarly, Christo and Jeanne-Claude envisage remarkable pieces that enfold workers, participants, bystanders and audiences. Often years in the making these works delight and lead us to see things anew – often by concealing details beneath vast swathes of fabric.

Wrapped Reichstag 1972-1995

Finally, the best of graffiti challenges us not only with its message but its profound anonymity. The artist disappears into work for which s/he gets no payment, let alone credit. The art can be the only satisfaction. This sacrifice of ego challenges my own.

Banksy’s prolific output and humour delights even at a distance.

Everyday the artists on RedBubble are inspiring others, mostly with no financial return (although we all love it when someone does buy!). Personally I think this is fine, there is a simple wonderful joy in sharing what we make for the sharing’s sake.

The sharing’s sake has always been a part of my life because of my lifestyle, (raising 5 children, having 9 grandchildren, which I am raising one of them)....so making a living on anything I do in the art forum would make me a very poor person seeing how I cant give it a full time effort :)

Just being able to share what my mind and heart can create is worth so much to me…the kind of payment I receive from someones satisfaction of something I create is the ONLY kind of money I can take with me when I die :)

i can’t honestly say I see much art in graffitti. There are always exceptions, but alas, most of what I see is just mindless expression OF ego – the shared (secret) knowledge of what you ‘did’ amongst friends and rivals.

I have seen very impressive murals and so forth, but that’s about 2% of what I personally have seen.

I know I’ll get heaps for this, but I reckon most graffitti work is on an artistic level equivalent to the most ordinary art works to be found in small country town agricultural shows. I also think that it is rarely original and, in spite of the pretensions of the perpetrators, selfish, self-indulgent vandalism.
I await the wrath of RB and will no doubt go home bruised with the label of Elitist….

  • RedBubble replied

Jeff, no wrath from me. I agree that most graffiti is not very uplifting. But the best of it can be. (Pilgrim in my RB guise)

I have to laugh. I am a frozen statue or should I say I am sometimes employed to be one. I have seen this on a small scale before but with paid artists not just members of the public. And on such a fantastic scale really amazing!

I myself am trying to engage fellow artists to become their star signs. Using their own supplied material and then creating a digital manipulation into their astrological star sign. Please see my Zodiac series.

Pilgrim, you’re on the money with this I reckon. Being a part of the Bubble is inspiring in itself… it inspires me to share, to put stuff out there for the feedback, in order to inspire others, to learn from others, to learn more about myself and my art, to challenge myself, to challenge others. And citing the great protagonists such as Christo and Banksy as an lead into your main point is perfect. So once again, sincere thanks. I actually saw an advert for RB in a cafe, at least a year b4 I finally got round to joining up… very glad I did. In fact it was the Land Mark series of workshops which convinced me to become a part of a new on-line community.. that and the enthusiasm of a fellow Bubbler, Katsu! onya mate

When I joined RedBubble in January 2008, I had no idea of the importance of that decision. Since then, I have been so amazed at the quality of gallery work that I feel humbled by it . Being a digital illustrator, I am in constant awe at the extraordinary
photographic galleries I come across while perusing. RedBubblers have given me so much support , appreciation and encouragement even though I don’t use a camera.
I am from Northern California, USA, but I feel that we are not a world apart , only a click away. The people ( and you Pilgrim) make RedBubble wonderful . Feeling that your work is appreciated is really what this is all about. A big thank you RedBubble.

  • Tony Elliott

I am so confused about the definition of art that I think at times I may even be a hypocrite. I love Banksy for example – because his work is striking both in message and detail, placement and audacity – yet I despise graffiti when it is sprawled over the side of a wall of a building that is a work of art in itself. At least Bansky places work that improve the area rather than detracts from what is there to be seen.

So if asked if graffiti was art I would say no, except for the good pieces…

...and then I am proving arrogant to know what is good and what isn’t. I was in a gallery in San Fran last year and someone had stuck four A4 coloured pieces of card to a black background, called it “New York at Night” and made his way into a gallery. I was appalled! Hidden around the corner was a painting of a balloon that blew me away and in comparing these two I would claim only one was art….

...but I would be called a fool by some.

Art defies to be defined which is wonderful and the picture shown by Martin of the building covered in material is heartbreaking inspired. I am also addicted to Shakespeare and the performances I see are the epitome of art in motion… as is street dance, ballet, tap….

...and yet I am told it is art to stand as still as one can on a box, painted gold and to not move until a coin is placed in a bucket. Is this really art?

The wave rises and we all ride it; to that I concur – but does anyone believe that there is some flotsam and jetsam riding with us, or am I being the elitist pig we all wish to escape?

  • Tony Elliott

    Tony Elliott

To add to the hypocrite in me – the clip of the people who stand still is again art – whereas in my mind the man a box is not. I think I need help… or a drink.

  • Parageiss

    Parageiss

Any action that inspires or makes a person stop and think is art, Tony you said

“So if asked if graffiti was art I would say no, except for the good pieces…”

graffiti is art it has been around as long as man, cave drawings thats a form of graffiti, It is said that graffiti is a crime, I beleive it is when done out of malice but even that malice is a form of experssion anger who much art is produced from emtion which anger is. I have a series of photograph on RB I took 1 hour of 1 days to photograph the life of a railway underpass the graffiti in that 200 yards of damp, urine tainted passageway inspired some colourful expressions. I like graffiti even GAZ WOZ ERE I always stop and think who they and why.

  • catruth

    Definition of art?
One party makes a sensory statement eliciting an emotional reaction in another?

  • catruth

“So if asked if graffiti was art I would say no, except for the good pieces…”

ahhh, but who determines what is “good”?

Hi parageiss. Thank you for that. I can now see how grafitti can be art even if it is not in the Banksy mode – because I guess I had not considered if art was a game limited to the talented. Wiuse words and thank you.

Catruth – I did mention that I thought I was arrogant after stating what I thought was good art and combined with my own comment above to parageiss, you will see I am humbled.

I personally will hold onto the quote “Any action that inspires or makes a person stop and think is art.”

    Blessings

Without discovering RB I am certain that I would still be in my little bubble of depression. I was suffering with an affliction which was delipidating and caused me to be bedridden. As the Lord is my witness, since finding RB around mid-March, 2008, I have overcome depression, received remarkable healing and am attempting to re-enter school or work. The many bubblemails with other RB’ers and all the fabulous groups and activities has encouraged me beyond words. Most of the time we don’t know how one little rain drop can affect a small pond. It may seem lost, but it just became a part of something bigger. God bless this site and ALL those who are a part of it and ALL those who have yet to discover us. I am living again!!!!

Hi Tony, Every one has talent its the case if someone thinks you have talent. For example a lot of my photographs I think are good luck rather then good judgement and a lot of of my photographs I love, but yet I don’t think I have a talent but my photographic calenders sell and my post cards sell and I get asked to do portraits and weddings so someone must like my work. I cannot draw, I tried water colours and pastels, it looks like its been done by a 4 year old on speed but someone told me I had a talent and bought two of my paintings, is it just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder then talent must also be in the same eye.

I know that my photography keeps me sane and active, sharing my images makes me happy without it I would be a mess, but I never forget to look beyond the lens and see the building, the person and the picture that was created for for to capture.

Always see with your mind rather then look with your eyes.

    Take care
