Hmm, rather interesting, as last night, just as a couple of said “attacks” occurred, I was having problems with a “weird” stalker attacking my work and leaving weird comments, using different profile’s created for this purpose. There was about 5 profiles created.

We all appreciate your efforts and thank you for all you do to make this site the best.

I did have a problem last night trying to access my bubble mail. I don’t know if it was this problem or just my server. Do you want us to report problems some where?
Personaly I use a Mac and avoid most bug that way. Most hackers are not Mac savy so only attack PCs.

I’m contracted to one of the big Australian servers – working online most weekends. There are heaps of assholes who think trying to take down servers is cool. We recently had to put up with jerks trying to take us down too. The good thing is that they aren’t really all that smart.

What IPS service do you use at RB? I have used many flavours in the past to prevent such attacks. The chances of them being caught is very slim as they move around a lot. There are many internet cafe’s in the world with little or no security that any number of hackers can hack or even walk into these places and use their equipment undetected.

I’m against the use of the letters DOS for anything but “Disk operating system.”
But I fully support RB in getting those bastards back. Why target us? We’re good people.

One thing that everyone can do to help, is run a firewall and anti-virus! It makes life harder for people who get their kicks out of kicking over other people’s servers. The fewer the Trojans, the fewer the zombies…

Oh, and don’t leave you machine connected 14/7 if you have no need to- it’s bad for the environment too, and a waste of money…

I would also look out for people targeting individual artists on this site as is the case on Deviantart. I’m not going to mention any names but the site is easy to find.

To answer most peoples why to why people do this…

Simple answer – because they can. It doesn’t need to be for money, fame, targeting sites, bad experience, ex-employee, etc… just because they can and this thread will probably be enjoyed by such people. You all need to calm down a bit. It is no different to when people knock on your front door trying to sell you something you don’t want or join their new faith, etc… they have denied you time as well – would you get them locked up and call them all the names under the sun?

Just use some common sense and protect yourself from it… easy really as you’ll never get rid of it – it will always be with us.

I wondered what was up. Often the site is extremely slow and I couldn’t imagine the server was actually under that great of a load. Owning a site of my own and having had to face similar situations I can only offer my empathies. For admins its right PITA and that’s being nice.

It seems that they target the most benevolent and altruistic entities. They hate all things of beauty because they are ugly and empty inside. They fill themselves with self-invented evil thinking they will gain something. They strike, then hide under rocks. They are the pathetic ‘zeroes’ of this world.

I would pay to see the agents smash in their doors and confiscate their systems with all their dirty little secrets. Who knows how many other crimes they’ve committed, how many endeavors and lives they’ve diminished in some way.

I’ve suffered with a lot of problems and I didn’t even know what DOS attack was, as I am very new to computers, but having made a little research on the net, I think that is what caused my computer from not working anymore?
If that is so? I really do hope you get those who are responcible for it to put a stop on them?

The good news is that the technology to minimize such attacks has evolved and the police do take them seriously (as seriously as any other criminal damage).

There is very little chance of catching the person or group unless they start bragging about it. They first create any army of bots (like a virus that does nothing on the users machines to avoid detection). They can spread for years while doing nothing to avoid detection while they spread and grow in number. Once in a while the bots will check to see if they have any instructions. They can do this by many ways. They could even be preprogrammed to look at a web site like MSN.COM or some other site and check for a key word to be placed on thier website. Thus activated by random chance. They just spread until that key word is added. That way they completely avoid detection and they don’t call home, so there isn’t any way to tie the bot back to a person. Anyway, the person doing this will have to do something really stupid to get caught. There are hackers that brag they have tens of thousands of bots. Like in this case, it appears they have received instructions to overload Redbubble.
Why would someone do this?
Braggin rights, maybe.
Because they are being paid by someone to do it? Most likely.
There is a strong underground that gets paid to do this.
Sometimes it is to bring down a web site so the stock drops. Somebody shorted the stock prior to the attack.
Sometimes it is to prevent a company from entering a new market or making a company look bad so they can’t get investment money. Thus preventing them from being a competitor. For example BSI USA and RedBubble.
Who knows for sure. But I’ll bet someone is making some money to do it. You would be shocked to know how often this happens.
