The Next Wave
Companies are not Islands (to misquote Donne). They have a context. They are part of a wave, ahead of a wave or just idling along nicely. What is RedBubble’s context?
It is quite possible to see RedBubble as an art site, a social network, an e-commerce site. From my perspective, none of these do justice to what you are creating. They don’t account for the passion and the energy that exists.
They also don’t help explain why we have come so far, so quickly. Right now RedBubble (less than 18 months from launch) is already be the third largest art site in the world – behind only DeviantArt and Art.com.
As I dwell on this, I think we are more closely related to the movement in “user generated content”. The advent of blogging has allowed millions to become active participants in the media. Likewise YouTube has emerged as a true complement to commercial television but with open access.
In both phenomenon the creators and consumers of the content overlap and there is a move from the mass to the niche. It is possible to find blogs and videos that precisely match your interests from skateboarding dogs to latest Web 2.0 developments.
So what about RedBubble? I think you are leading the wave of user generated art. This art is much more accessible, diverse and relevant (most of the time) to people’s myriad interests.
And just as the mainstream media and TV dismissed (and dismiss) blogging and YouTube as peripheral, we are seeing such a reaction from the art world. This is understandable (albeit patronizing) reaction.
It is also unnecessary. The challenge of RedBubble is that we declare everyone has the right to participate in the creation and purchase of art. This can only enrich the totality of the art and creativity in the world. This has other benefits – which I will leave for another post.
Martin (aka Pilgrim)
p.s. We know the site has been a little unstable over the weekend. There was some sort of attack – probably accidental – and problems with image loading. These are largely resolved although there is ongoing work. Thanks to everybody who let us know.

thanks for the info Martin…..........hear hear

You’re right we are all having the time of our life showing our art and communicating with each other, comparing work and improving our style – thank you for offering RB to us to do this

“user generated art”...
Is that just “art made by an artist”?

What I am trying to get at is that everybody feels they have a right to participate in it.

I’ve only been on RedBubble for a week and from the word go I was inspired – even had 2 sales! Thanks for your thoughts – I agree, there’s so much energy and passion here. I didn’t realise RB was No.3 – fantastic! I’m also on DeviantArt but I find RB much more interactive and friendly. And inspirational! Go RB!!

I have told a lot of artists about this site and the quality of the prints, when the word spreads furthur this will be the top of the tree, keep on red bubble.

Red Bubble is most assuredly the best art site I’ve run across. I think it has a great future which is attested to by the caliber of creative people it has already attracted.

Martin my friend – To look into what can be from what is, is precisely why RB is as successful as it is. To broaden yet to keep the art and the founding principal of RB in place as so far been extremely on that successful road. So very proud of you, Jo and all the staff. What is to come is clearly ours to grab, shape and mold to keep this bubble spinning around the world for so many artists and their passions. I have never been more proud of that little red orb and how it is spinning forward… always forward!!

If is weren’t for Redbubble, I probably would not have started creating stuff. I tried other sites but they are not user friendly, have a convoluted user interface and do not cater for both the artist and audience. Being able to create watchlists, favourites and groups are brilliant concepts and contribute to your competitive advantage.
I reckon you will surpass DiviantArt within the next 18 months providing you don’t loose the passion (and sell out to Microsoft)...lol
Heather Rivet...
Redbubble is outstanding …and one of the best sites …you listen to us as artists and ask for our input..and follow through…kudos to the fine folks at redbuble and to the outstanding artists here….
Adrian Carmody
The fight will be on to make sure the community doesn’t become splintered too much while Redbubble expands. The last 2-3 months have “felt” very different to things at the start of the year

Congratulations on such an Artful site. I am honored to be in the realm of all this creativity. I appreciate your stand with and for the Artists. My only reservation is that I did not join sooner. Best always!

Mega Congratulations!!!
You have all done such an outstanding job! Red Bubble is by far my favourite art site! Keep on doing whatever it is you’re doing because whatever it is, it works. BRAVO EVERYONE!
Unlike most art sites, you don’t just pretend to listen to the community, you really do. I think that’s the key.

Glad to be rubbing elbows with some extraordinary talent here.

Where would we all be without red bubble, I’ll tell you, trying to show our work to people in our local area. Red Buble is awseome AND worldwide. I have communicated with peiople all over the world. Thank you for Red Bubble! I think we all need to remember that the pasat weeks posts whilst daun ting for us new bubblers should be expected off and on. After all we are a family with diverse interpretations and ideas so we will also have different aspects. We should remember to encourage other people
Red bubble Rules! thankyou

I (HEART) Red Bubble…
There’s an interesting community aspect here that I’ve never seen on any other site or forum regardless of the subject matter. I think this is a part of RB’s charm or character but that doesn’t explain it’s growth or popularity.
Good luck peoples and keep up the great work.

Hear Hear! or is it ….Here Here!? I agree. Other art sites are so difficult to become part of and participate in the community…I gave up and stuck to redbubble. The concept of the interaction between with types of interests is a real winner…it caters for everyone. Redbubble is like a real cospomopolitan city – there are suberbs and street that I don’t feel comfortable in…but that’s fine…I just don’t go there! I love it and I am still amazed at the friendliness, bonhomie and genuine level of support which pulsates through the community here. I am proud to be part of redbubble and I tout its wonders to anyone who will listen (and some who don’t).

Redbubble has changed my life!
Sounds rather over dramatised, but in truth it has, I have never been so involved with other artists and photographers before. I have been on a huge learning curve since joining rb only this year and have met fabulous people.
Photography has become a much larger focus for me since joining, which is just what I wanted to happen. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all you hard working redbubble creators and administrators for creating this marvelous online art world!! xxxxxx
MKWhite
Thanks for the update. I know I’m probably not the only one who wants to know but I’ll ask to see if I can get an answer. What was the ratio of revenue to artist on this site for the first year and half?
joan warburton
Give it another few months and you’ll be the number one art site on the internet. You do an outstanding job. Thank you!
Mark Ramstead
Yes RedBubble has matured, and it may stand out because of the ages of those who submit here. I like the adult artist atmosphere and hope it remains that way. There is nothing quite like it elsewhere. Kudos
Shaun Johnston
Great work guys. Keep it powering on.
WayoftheWarrior
If not for this site I most likley would have stopped posting any of my work on the net. The acceptance of all art is so refreshing and the lack of pitty drama just makes it even better. Honestly I have began to enjoy creating art and photgraphing again because of this site and the wonderful people here. Thank you.

A bunch of positive stuff has come my way since I joined Red Bubble.I participated in my first exhibition through being on this site.I’ve met some fantastic people and been exposed to some great opportunities and some brilliant art.yay Red Bubble!

Understood… I like that RB is a pivot point for many casual art consumers, inspiring the observer into becoming the artist.

RedBubble is outstanding as a site for artists.. I have all but abandoned the many other sites where I am listed…I have become involved in several splinter projects, which I would have never been able to do elsewhere, and I am having the time of my life…keep up the good work.

I’m new here , but all I can say about RB is positive. I like here I can cover the entire diversity of visual experience from graphics to photography. First impression ,when I left myshutterspace ,and I subscribed here was RB it is more user friendly and about excessive silly censorship ,restrictions, rules and regulations, here just don’t exist. The artists here are more complex, they are able to share writtings too wich is cute. This means they are more sensitive and they share intense and deep feelings .This is the mark of this site .When the world is full of commercial and consumers culture , there are people here who are able to have artistic impressions and feelings. Thats why I started to love this site .I’m sorry I have no time to explore the entire treasure wich is acumulated here.I didnt found any incovenient here and the atitude of people here is remarcable positive comparing with the site I left .There controling my comments even was nice(a group admin there was offenced cuz my comment was too nice!!! ? and was considered as a public offense to other members with much more important or nice photos….(no comment). Its true I over reacted maybe because I was very upset ,and from nice and gentle I atacked the intruders with hard words and I deleted all my groups and files after I spent there a lot energy and time .Was not a totally waste of time . I met very special people there , and I learned many things from experienced artists.I lost many nice friends because one stupid guy .Was a lesson to do not sacrifice nice people and blaim the entire site just for one ill will out of selfcontrol individual. Here I feel safe , I have no fear about my files , there is a good protection.RB has interesting features wich I didn’t saw on other sites, offerring support for all visual artists , both photographers and designers, this was a brilliant ideea.I’m a designer who ocasionally take photos in addition to my work. What could be interesting in the future is how the RB will extend the services .For example there are designers who are interested to sell vector graphics or multimedia , I’m sure they will improve the interface and make all the activity more dinamic and interactive.I have no clue who is the adminstrator here but they do a great work here.
Holly Werner
Gratz love everything here.

Congratulations, RedBubble. I think we all feel valued here. And the superb work on show here just shows that your ethos does not devalue art. Being on RedBubble has made me want to be better at what I do. Thanks to the generosity and encouragement of the community.

I think Red Bubble is so successful is because it is so open and encouraging to every artist …Lateral thinking ..energetic and full of passion

Congrats RB team and Bubblers, that’s amazing growth in such a short time…not really that astonishing as RB is the best;)
George Lenz
Thx for your insight, and comments. I have been on this ride since Aug 07, and still enjoy it. You guys respond to our input, your support responses are superb and timely, and your concern for the artist, I believe, is your most important mission, and asset.
We collectively make RB what it is. With your help our art becomes timeless. The quality of the products that come out of your production facilities is top notch, and I am proud to be part of this community. My wife says to me “every time I turn around, I see RB on your screen”. I’m guilty of being addicted to RB (lol)...alot of us are…I look forward to new product opportunities we’ll be able to offer our customers. For example Zazzle does offer many products, and ways to promote our art, like mugs, mouse pads, buttons and the like.
Keep up the good work, and in no time RB will be number 1. Cheers. G.
Reese Forbes
I have been here only 2 weeks, but I am liking RB a lot already. Considered Art.com a long time ago and rejected it (DeviantArt does not sound like most of my images, but as I upload more people might disagree about that) to take a couple of web classes and set up my own site which I never got perfected (my own fault) and could not seem to link all I could provide to payment method. Now RB fulfills that for me.
I also like the feedback and connection with other artists around the world – which surprised me as I never thought that would be something I was looking for.
The only question in my mind is how to let the buyers of art become aware of RedBubble?
Roz McQuillan
Congrats Red Bubble, and bubblers!!! It is a fantastic site, inspiring and user friendly. My question would be, how can we bring RB to the notice of the wider community Out There? cheers!
Kristina K
your number 1 in my book, and as long as you keep evolving and changing with the artist, because lets face it they do change, which is good, RB will take over the art world..
Go RB…you have my vote of confidence.
Thank you for all your hard work and to all the artist who are here as well, its a tribute to you as well.
regards kristina

I have been here for a little under 2 month if not 1 month. I have always wanted to just paint and let someone else do the business side. POW. Here comes redbubble!! Just what I always wanted. I can put whatever price I want, and rb does all the rest. Groups, artwatch, favorites, many, many more interesting things. Great going!
Gabriel Popa
How can we bring RB to the notice of the wider community ?All of us we can help with something. I started to promote RB using embeded code on my creativezone.ro homesite and anyone who wants to see my photography gallery is redirected here. I sell stock photos on Dreamstime and 123rf too, and I can spread the word in my artist comunity .I offer my full support for this site

Hi Martin.
We are pleased to be partnered with RedBubble for our upcoming initatives. Looking ahead, we are determined to raise community awareness and funds for Australian charities.
In being partnered with RedBubble, an avenue is provided in which we can hopefully assist those Australians who are less fortunate.
We trust the RedBubble community can spread our journals far and wide, donate a few dollars to our projects, and support us in our endevours in any way possible.
We wish the RedBubble community the very best.

Congrats to the RedBubble team! You are doing awesome! In a very short time I foresee you being number one on your stats list, but know that you are already number one to all the people here! Traditional methods of retailing artwork may have worked well in the past, but it’s time for the artworld to get bubbletized! Thank you for all the opportunities you have managed to create here. Thank you to all fellow bubblers, it is a great place to come, share, and purchase from so many that I personally would not have had the opportunity to meet if it had not been for Redbubble! : )

RedBubble is the most awesome community site I’ve ever seen. I most appreciate the fact that there is essentially no advertisments – pop ups trying to sell me toothpaste, condo space, or cars. THANK YOU for not allowing that stuff in here…
When the only place plain old folks could get exposure to any sort of artform was a museum, and maybe a school, then I can understand the hoity toity snobbish nose in the air attitudes that perhaps the aficionados are attempting to hold on to. But in my opinion, (ok , counts for little maybe) there are dozens if not hundreds of artists here that make Jackson Pollack’s work look like child’s play – Where would those artists be found if not in a community like RB? The world is a MUCH better place today :) Thanks RB for giving us all a place to learn, show, be exposed to, support, and be supported.
Here’s to number ONE by Christmas :)

So what was the reaction from the art world??

RedBubble has become such an important part of my life. It has helped reopen my eyes so I can see the beauty of the world around me instead of just my own darkness. I am validated by peers I treasure and now have hopes and goals. RedBubble has ended up being about so much more than art – it has helped me find me again.
I thank you

Well done Red Bubble, thank you for having the vision in the first place to make it all possible. I see it as participating in a new social and cultural revolution and yes “a new wave”. Footing it is a thing of the past. The speed of cyber communication is the key, never before have so many artists worldwide had such immediate response and opportunity to speak so directly to each other.
To Anthony above….Jackson Pollock incidentally was a maverick in his time, to dismiss the great artist as child’s play is to misunderstand him and the knowledge bank of art completely.

Thanks Martin, keep up the good work .

Most of my time on the computer is now spent with RedBubble, great site and wonderful Artists. Also very user friendly. Keep up the good work.

red bubble has changed my life, too….i would not be creating at the rate i am now creating if i didn’t have the support and encouragement of everyone here, as well as a place to put it all!! finding red bubble has caused my creative impulse to kick in to overdrive, and i am so grateful for the opportunity….thanks so much, we may grinch a little bit from time to time but please know most of us really love and appreciate you for all you do to make red bubble great!!

Here’s to the future of Red Bubble. May it keep bubbling forever. I love seeing what art is out there everyday.

It is great to be apart of history. To be involved in a movement, that at the time did not feel as a movement or a fad but rather a outlet to express ones artistic views and to be rewarded with a wealth of feedback from others who are just as excited to show their creations!
Thanks RedBubble for giving us artist an outlet to show, sell and critique our creations!!

Near the end of the list again I am, but yes, I open my mouth and my friends hear redbubble, I tell them I don’t understand people buying t.shirts or art in other places when they have their choice of redbubble and worldwide professional artists. And quality well you guys are doing a good job and we will help at our end. Maybe we could hire a red balloon and float it around here in Brisbane. Thanks Martin

Red Bubble and the artist here have realy helped me in my art and the presentation of my art, the work on this site is magnificent, I am very proud to be part of such a group and glad we are moveing upward to better things, good work RB. Pat

I have felt mostly positive about Rbub, and still in awe of how short the amount of time it has members totaling 50,000 or so? Is that right??? But by far I am inspired by the artists and challenged to do my best.
I humbly thank you for redbubble. It’s fun!!!!

Redbubble can be a steeping stone to greater art achievements, or just a cool place to hangout with creative people, or just a place to sell and promote, or look at pretty things… its up to each and every one of us, its like a PICK YOUR OWN ADVENTURE story for artists and art lovers

B R A V O!! RB :O) Jo Martin all of you just rock big time – this site is the saviour of many a trapped creative soul! XX ♥ XX
But are you telling me there are other artists sites ?? Who needs them? !!!
Of course we are in the top 3! Did anyone really doubt that?
but .... [sorry I really don’t want to sound deflatists but there’s always a but :O)] ....
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can us writers be next and have a product to sell?
Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzze XXXXXXX ♥ XXXXXXX
Look If you give me a Tee with a redbubble and a whole stack of red discs with the site addy on it I will letter box them! I will stand on the corner of Flinders St station then Southern cross station then Central station then Parliament station and hand them out to all the poor tired creatively suppressed and disheartened commuters !!!
Actually send me a bunch this week cos on the weekend I’m going to a real life writers workshop and I’ll spread the word …. but they’ll just be more writers salivating for a publication product like I am :O)
Dang it if I had the official business cards and the AOK from you guys I would source out an agent to represent us! Heck I’ll source out how I can become the agent and start pushing publisher’s door bells for us! Geee I wish my cousin still ran his printing business! Perhaps he has a mate who still does ….. Can I have the advertising material and the AOK?? Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeze? :O)
But I’m not going to be a pain in the butt about it!
I love this bubble I’m totally addicted and I cant wait to sit down and write [NB length of comment :O)] Yet it would be really nice to be published – just once even :O)

It’s a great site. Thank you!
Keith Richardson
I remember a few years ago, when Google was just starting, talking about it and promoting it to my computing students, who laughed behind hands-across-mouths thinking the silly old bugger has lost it again! Well, look where Google is now. And why did it prosper so much? – it gave us what we wanted!
RedBubble, as long as you continue to give the artistic community (producers and consumers) what they want, you too will prosper and grow. I guarantee that!
Now, I know that you at RedBubble respond wonderfully well to all of our requests, however there is one thing that regularly drives me mad, because it seems to be so inefficient, and would be so good if you could fix it up please.
I am referring to the groups one wants to associate an upload with. Mine are all hopelessly out of any logical order, so I slowly work my way through them each time. Some groups require us to take some items off, so that we can put others in, and the process is so time-consuming. What I want to be able to do is rearrange the groups I belong to. So, could this improvement please be given high priority?
Thanks again for doing such a wonderful job, RedBubble.
Regards, Keith

I agree RedBubble is an art Movement, allowing us to share our skills and develope new ideas, inspirations from all angles and a point of sale Exhibition as well!

Thankyou Martin for such a positive, forward looking and friendly Site. I joined last week and immediately was in contact with like minded people of amazing Artistry who make time to be helpful. The Art work in here is stunning. DA is not my style but RB certainly is on my wavelength . I haven’t started offering my work for sale yet as my confidence wanes when I see such magnificent work from others, but hopefully through time I will .
Melanie Dooley
I can see why RB has grown so quickly – the community spirit is what makes it unique and special.
I would like to see a resource repository like they have on DA – where people can put their stock images, brushes, textures etc for all to share and use.

I came on board 7 months ago; it was with great trepidation as I was comparing my amateurish work to the stratospheric high quality I was seeing here….I was made welcome, I was encouraged to experiment to participate….I was explained and taught things it would have taken me years to learn on my own (or great amount of cash I do not have). Bubblers have given me the confidence to go and try to sell (succesfully!) my work in my country.
Being a tour guide here in S.Africa I am in contact with a lot of tourists with a passion for photography – I always give them the RB web address to please try ! And tell them how much RB has done for and my passion!
Thank you RB for changing my world for the better!

redbubble is one of the best websites that I’ve ever found since 2000, when I got my first modern computer. It’s community, art, user friendly, safe for both images and people and the management do a really great job.
I tend to paste the html links on the odd website I post in – found in ‘my bubble’.

I’d like to add my congratulations to Martin and everyone involved in RB. as well, my inspiration and desire to improve, would not be anywhere near as advanced without RB and the great people on this site. Someone told me the other day that RB was an addiction to me, “without a doubt” I replied, “and I look forward to having it for many years to come.”

I love Red Bubble but dont underestimate yourselves – your quality of the goods and the ease of use of the website and the apparent ease of how to contact you all makes up for something that will work. Try the artistsweb.co.uk and you will see how superior you are to that site. By the way I only trialled it to see what was what – very loyal to Red Bubble and always will be. Not to mention the friends I have made and I am meeting up with in two weeks to see in the person – so how good is that

I have grown to adore redbubble since joining earlier in the year. Visually the site is clean and clear and beautiful. There is nothing extraneous that distracts from the art. The community is great and that side of it has given me so much more than I expected when I started. Congratulations.

It seems always that I come to these releases after reams of commentry. Nevertheless, I will echo the general sentiment, and congratulate u and the operational bods behind RB. I found DeviantArt less than satisfying: and I pay for a subscription there! well I was. the interaction here amongst Bubblers is so strong and (generally) supportive, it not only encourages one to put up one’s best efforts, but also to be experimental, to “have a go!” to put yourself on the line. and that has to be a good thing. I’m enjoying being a part of the “next wave”. Actually meant to jump on sooner! But things happen at their appointed time. The time is now.

Any chance of removing the ban on me posting new works to any group. I promise to be good. Wish I knew who I upset. I just want to be as happy as Larry. The same as everyone does…... Please remove the ban !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can I star a petition ??

If it gets away from the snobbery and exclusivity of galleries, then it has to be good.

Red Bubble is playing it’s part in de-mystifying art and it shows that anyone with a creative gene in their body can contribute. I haven’t sold a thing yet, but who cares: I can share and it means so much to me just to have that opportunity.

that is totally awesome, and i think well deserved and coming so far so fast certainly tells you that you are doing a fine job on this site, the artists are so diverse and absolutely fantastic and they all seem to be very genuine which is what we all need, i have certainly enjoyed my time here and i think i am growing as a photographer, for which i truly thank you.
excellent news.

Thank you for all the work and updates

I agree your point re the ‘art world’ being patronising about this site and others – I’d go further and use the word dismissive.
I usually ask how many visitors they have to their galleries in a week – that sorts them.
Keep up the good work

This is it :
“The challenge of RedBubble is that we declare everyone has the right to participate in the creation and purchase of art. This can only enrich the totality of the art and creativity in the world.”

Yes, I love RB but Can someone tell me when I upload a T-Shirt as a jpg RGB the site tells me that I can’t. I don’t understand. Also why is it that in my profile it only says send cubanacan22 a bubble mail but says nothing about adding me to your watch list?
jadegreenimage
Cubanaca22 – T Shirt designs need to be in .png format I think, not .jpg

oops sorry missed an “n” from your name

Proud member here too – adding her congratulations to the RB Team!
I promote the Art (and artists) here at RB every chance I can. I use a ‘printing’ site here in the States (vista) for business cards for my clients …. and once you place and order you are forever getting FREE offers!
So what better information to put on FREE – Business cards, Post Cards, Magnets, etc RebBubble.com of course!!
Keep up the good work
(and I second the idea of showing which ‘groups’ each piece of art is currently ‘shown’ in to make it easier to remove older works and replace them with new offerings. The ‘code’ for compiling this info is already in place since the ‘public’ view page shows which group the piece is in …. just add that code as an additional line on the ‘art’ page for the artists – along with views, comments and sales.)
On to #1

I have Been a photographer for over 20 years and RB has opened my mind and art like nothing I have been involved with in my entire career!
Its a tremendous way to learn from others art and meet people who give you the encouragement to continue when you have doubt about what your doing.
Its been a wonderful addition to my life.
