What lovely work; must have been difficult making a decision with all the entries, but the result looks like a good outcome. One of these was in my favourites! I hadn’t had a chance to look at the rest; it’s not easy seeing everything, and I’m glad that now I don’t have to be searching the best of the best myself!

To me, Dryad is the quintessential Helena Nelson-Reed. Her work is so beautiful and inspired that it is impossible to have a “favorite”, but (to me) this one truly embodies all that is Helena’s art and I’m glad to see it recognized here. I first want to congratulate all the winners in the writing categories. I think they are all remarkable writers. However I must complain about a couple glaring misfortunes. I found all the winning writing pieces grossly sentimental and gushing with floral, ostentatious language (the meaning in the pieces is drowned by the language!). Had I not known any better I would have thought the same author wrote them all. All of these writing pieces testify to the fact that in recent years writing has evolved into a sort of “flowery ejaculation of the heart”. And nearly all of the pieces exposit strictly physical phenomenon. It appears as if modern materialism has infested our imaginations. I apologize if I have offended anyone. It is not my intention to do so.

Now I just feel like an a-hole after reading everyone else’s comments. I’m probably just bitter because I didn’t win and I think that the winning artists are all very talented. It was an honor to participate in this competition with everyone.

Actually, alindsay, I agree with you. It’s all way too flowery. But I suppose when you’ve got a writing contest where people have to judge works and pick the winners out of countless more or less equally good pieces of work, there’s never going to be any one poem that really stands out above the rest as a clear-cut winner. And so the judges have to decide what they value in a poem, and use that to devise a standard for judging. As a result, there’s inevitably going to be a bias against anything that doesn’t fit the exact mold they’ve formed, the concept they have in their head of the ideal poem or winning piece of art or whatever. So basically, it’s not a contest of the best poem, but the poem that most closely resembles the mold.

Personally, I think contests of this sort are utterly ridiculous. You can’t rank art. Show me a contest-winning poem and I’ll show you a poem that stands out only in that it’s absolutely the most ordinary piece of work submitted.

Glory as a poet or writer is overrated. What matters is that you’re heard by those who need to hear you.

a follow up is in order eh guys…

obviously the publication will not be printed in may as was stated after they changed the original deadline…but they have an enormous task putting these books together…

since the publications consistently run behind perhaps instead of trying to do these quarterly maybe bi-annually or yearly would be a better choice to make things a bit more manageable….

that would just make the job of rummaging through works even harder
