RedBubble New Features & Release Notes
Hello hello! We’ve just rolled out this weeks release, the highlights include:
A real credit card system
You can now pay for stuff with a credit card without having to use PayPal—you can do it all without leaving RedBubble. Previously, this was only available as an option for orders in Australian dollars. PayPal is still an option, of course.
Clear GIFs over the larger images
By popular demand! If you really want to discourage people from downloading the larger versions of your images, there’s an option in your profile to do so. Please understand it’s impossible to prevent downloading of images displayed on web pages (they can still do a screen capture, for example), but activitating this feature will make it more difficult.
Interesting nerdy sidenote: GIF is pronounced “JIFF”.
The pre-loading images experiment
After the main art & clothing gallery pages load, we’re pre-loading the images for the next page in the background, so that when you click “next” the page should load much faster for most people. It’s an experiment, but it seems to be working really well so far.
The activity footer experiment
In another experiment, we’re putting the two most recent activity events down above the footer. The theory is that users might accidentally discover new stuff that they may not have found any other way, and we’ll see how that goes.
Featured and recent work in the group home pages
We’re showing two rows of both now, instead of one or the other.
Also
There’s the usual bug fixes, tweaks, etc. We know we’re a little behind on launching of new groups that have been proposed—please be patient!
Enjoy!

Good work guys :)
just one thing-this didn’t and isn’t showing up in my activity monitor, yet you’re on my watch list?
Ben Ryan
Tracey – it takes a little while for the post to get into the activity monitor – it’ll show up shortly.
Tracy Wallace
weird, just showed up :)
S.I. Sheehan
Just let me know when you can change my URL….. Otherwise, splendid work….. ~S
BigFatRobot
lovely jubbly!!
Jennie Rosenbaum
I love the activity monitor, noticed it straight away – it’s a really good idea. thanks also for the transparent .gifs :)

Adrian Carmody
Great work on the clear “JIFF”, that’s a huge relief :)
..now for a way to sort our images without getting click cramp?
lightsmith
err,,, after 22 years of I.T. experience, having worked with Unisys (the attempted copyrighters of the GIF format) and having dealt with other people in I.T. on an ongoing business, absolutely no-one I’ve met has ever called them ‘JIFFs’
Other than that, everything else looks pretty snazzy. (s.n.a.z.z.y. pronounced lymphgland)
Justin French
Lightsmith, I’ve always called it a GIF too ;)
heist
jiff ftw \m/
Justin French
There’s this page too — I know, you can’t believe everything you read on the internet, but… :)
Bob Fox
Welcome to the age of expression!
Stewart Macdonald
Interesting nerdy sidenote: GIF is pronounced “JIFF”.
I’m from England. I speak the Queen’s English. It’s pronounced “GIF” as in “gift”.
End of story.

isn’t Jiff a powerful bathroom cleanser… I’m a giff “g” for gorilla girl and unlikely to change now… good work boys and girls…
Firedrake
JIF!?
No, it’s GIF!! It’s not giraffics interchange format!!
Hop Dac
nerds, take it outside.
Lam Tran
Great news, thank you so much for the new features!

maggiebarra
thank you for all your hard work and this wonderful site…maggie
InvisibleSmith
Good work guys, keep it up!
Marion Chapman
I am so pleased to hear about changing the group showings to recent and featured – what a relief. I loved seeing what was recently uploaded to a group. Thanks for that change. (ps it’s definitely a g not a j)
Stephen Mitchell
Ditto on the G* not J for GIF, 10+ years pronounced as such.
The ’ *what’s happening? ’ footer is an interesting idea.
Thankfully far enough down that it won’t be distracting!
lallymac
I love the nerdy sidenote:) Sounds like good stuff – I like that there will be recent and featured row.
Marilyn Brown
Okay another group overview page change…. can we stop now!
Elaine Harriott
Thanks – you guys do such a great job!
JulieMahony
Go you Guys and Gals. You are all doing a fantastic job which I do not envy you for. Love getting all the little tips and snippets. Keep up the good work and God bless.
Elaine Harriott
PS – I’m loving the debait on GIF v Jiff. I’ve brought it up at work with our graphic designers. Our American guy says he calls it Jiff, but our Australian one says GIF.
Justin French
Marilyn, there will be plenty more — the nature of this whole site is that it’s going to change a lot. Every week actually! We listen to feedback, we solve problems, we experiment, etc. We try hard to make sure the changes are not disruptive, but sometimes they are. It’s exciting!
EOS20
Great stuff. :)
Shelley Heath
Love having both featured and recent. :)
lightsmith
all us nerds had a meeting. We were going to go outside, but we kept opening and closing windows to see what the whether was like. As is the case with windows, it was always bad and of course, no one had brought their mac . So after much booting around of ideas, consulting faulty memory, and a few fried chips, we all decided to see what the net might catch. Decided on the following
G from GNOME,
I from SILENT
F from the second F in effective
i.e. ‘EYE’
he he he
Jo O'Brien
I won’t be using the GIF – It would mean I can’t paste my work in forums and around redbubble. I’d prefer the exposure for my work.
Damien Mason
Bah! I say giff. Pee En Jee. Jay Peg. You can all go to hell.
*i mean really, ping?

Great new changes, guys. Keep up the good work.
Marilyn Brown
Justin, thanks for that.
I’ll just have to get used to the new format but only a little bit.
Christopher E...
hey jiff rocks..its the peanutbutter choosey kids (not moms) choose :)
and thanks soooooooooooo Much you guys for adding that feature!! totally Awesome!
Stephen Colquitt
Nice work on th GIF guys. Will make a lot of people happy I think.
binjy
:) looks good..thanks folks…....
any way to bulk delete bubblemails yet? us dinosaurs on dialup get a bit snowed under :(
ChainmailChick
Great updates! Love the choice of a transparent GIF over images. That is just the larger images, I see, which is perfect, in my opinion. Super work, guys and gals! I absolutely love the Bubble, and it’s got a lot to do with how willing the staff is to listen, and how active they are around the site about interacting with the members.
Best art site on the ‘nets, in my opinion.
I’ve always pronounced it ‘GIF’ as in ‘gift’, too. Habit will be hard to break, so I probably won’t try, lol. =)
Ilunia Felczer
thanks guys for always comming up with new ideas…
Peter Horsman
Well if the creators of the GIF format pronounce it JIFF then I guess it is JIFF
But I’ll be sticking with GIF. Old habits die far too hard at my age…
Natalie Perkins
Like Jo, I won’t be using the blank gif for the very same reasons. I guess if it makes people feel better it was worth all the belly aching!
Carlos Solorza
jee whiz. all i know is that you juys are doing a fantastic gob. and i must agree, RB is by far the best art community on the net. your time and knowledge are greatly appreciated.
thank you
carlos (i’m going to pronounce it “Jiff”) >8-0
Cathie Tranent
Haha Carlos!! I was going to type something profound – but I’m too busy laughing.
I have decided now that the j in jpeg should be pronounced as in San Jose, so I’m gonna have jiffs and haypegs!! (I wasn’t gonna type the pronunciation of “h” which is supposedly “aitch” and really throw the cat amongst the tiphs!!
Jaeda DeWalt
Thank you for all the fabulous new features and for everything you do on behalf of this inspiring community.
You continue to make this a wondrous place to be and experience as that of artist and art lover :).
Beth Mills
Jolly josh, gust can’t jet my head around all this gif jiff gunk!! Well done, RB for remaining relatively sane in these surroundings!

Good work Team Redbubble!
DavidAmosPhoto...
You guys are the most supportive I have come across on the web,,,, XLNT WORK!!!
Helen McLean
Ahhhh, all these years I been pronouncing it GIF and not JIFF. Who says it’s JIFF anyway???
Kitsmumma
Aaahh, now I know why no-one has responded to my post in the forums, seems all the red dots are here debating pronunciation, personally I don’t care if it’s giff or jiff, a response would be nice.
DaisyLadiE
Kitsumma, GIG or JIFF your work is awesome.
bchrisdesigns
Firstly, Guh-if OR Juh-if, does not matter as long as it works. LOL! Sometimes, when I am tired I pronounce PNG “punge”. Then I giggle. I think it was Shakespeare who said “a rose y any other name is still a rose and would still smell as sweet…” (or something to that effect). smart man, Shakespear.
Okay, so I am half-asleep and only going off three hours of sleep so I am just rambling-rambling.
Second thing I wanted to mention to Jo and Natalie and whoever else….. You can use the GIF feature to block your images and STILL get the link to place them on your blog/website/etc. Right clicking is not the only way to get the link and it is not the only way to save someone’s image. I know the way. Follow me to the Dark Side! I just enabled the GIF thing on my profile but will still be linking them to my blog because I am tricky…tricky-tricky-tricky! I would post a journal entry showing people how to do it (I am sure some people already know how), but I think that would defeat the whole purpose of the “GIF blocker thingy”. But, if you wanna know…BM me…perhaps I will be in a giving mood. LOL! It is actually a simple four step process. But it can be down. And that is what I think Justin was referring to when hes said that there is no fool proof way to block someone from stealing or saving your images. But every little bit helps!
Okay, that is all.
Love. Peace. Chicken Grease!
~b.christopher ;o)
bchrisdesigns
OMG, talk about a proofreader’s paradise!!! My post had so many errors that I just slapped my own hand with a ruler!!!!
That is what happens when you perform this equation:
No Sleep
- No Monster Java
+ Ripping Your Pants (as you walk through the parking lot of Best Buy)
x The pants were brand new
—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-——Me Right Now – Sad & Tired & Ungrammatically Correct!
Ugh. What a day. :o(
Leoni Venter
Thank you thank you thank you! You’ve made my day, lol!
booboo
All the above is very fine and I’m sure it will make a big difference to a lot of people for them to view their work easier.
But what about the people who do all the organising and the running of events etc, I have asked till I’m blue in the face for an events calendar so I can keep track of all the meets, competitions and prospective sponsors I have written too.
I don’t mean to put the work you have already done down, but I feel I am being ignored and the all effort I am putting in, is not appreciated in any way shape or form.
So come on RB what about the workers!!!
heist
agree with Jo Obrian – I won’t use the transparent GIF because it means people won’t be able to put my images on their desktops or whatever
kseriphyn
Cool changes and I particularly like the group one. Keep on tweaking guys!
Rock on !:0)
Sarah McKoy
I like the changes. .
susan davies
what youve done to the groups is amazing and helps to promote many artist in each groups own particular way, also anything that tries to stop the downloading our work has got be good, also i see brian has suggested an events calender that would be great as our one group is on its third meet and is combining this time members of two groups. Thanks to you all for your hard work team.
Jeremy Harrington
The clear GIF is a great idea. nice work
Stephanie Rach...
it’s been said a million times above already, but yeah, lovin’ the GIF feature!
Dorothy Venter
Thank you for all your hard work. But I do have a problem with pre-loading the next page. I have limited and very expensive bandwidth. As it is I try to skip artists who show pics of cards and posters etc. together with their uploaded image, in order to save bandwidth. Pre-loading will make it impossible to enjoy the work of other artists. I am sure there are a lot of RB members who have the same problem.
webgrrl
Thanks again RB team for all your hard work.. the Gif is good stuff..and i like the experiment footer, though..it is so very small.. one size up in font would be nice
and i was wondering if it would be better (or not?) to have Whats Just Sold in there instead of what peoples been commenting etc.
I just think us humans have this uncontrollable urge to see what others have bought (and what other artist are selling) more so than what others are commenting about…
thanks again!
Deborah Fuller
great glad to here the news.
TimHatcher
EEr…. yes! Well done!
MuscularTeeth

Great Job RB.
Is there any chance to use FTP to upload images? As every time that I upload something the system crashes.
marlaakajake
ghosts…wow!
about the arranging of your photos…
picasso has this little ditty. maybe you could ask google to share?
red addiction
I dont’ tell you this often, but you guys are doing a fantastic job.
joan warburton
Jiff is a peanut butter, short for Jiffy, here in the states. It’s gif unless you want a sandwich. Thanks, RB!
Lazarita Betan...
Something to worry about is viewers downloading your work. I still don’t understand how Red Bubble does to prevent this!
JuneHolbrook
I am a 3 day old baby on RB and it doesn’t matter to me if it is Jif or Gif… I can’t talk yet!
I just cry. LOL
Love what I see so far..
Brad Sumner GLP
These are wonderful! Keep working to improve the site!
lightsmith
Just one question.
Is it BUMPS? BEEMAPS or BUMPERS?
(.BMP)
sorry. only stirring…..
solareclips~Ju...
Thank you for continuing to do such a fabulous job!!
Anne Staub
Excellent! always amazed by your proactivity and new ideas.
Any chance though for some tiny boxes next to our bubblemails with the option of deleting several in one go ? :) and maybe have more tiny boxes near the groups, showing the maximum submission number allowed per 24 hours for each group, or maybe have all the groups agree to the same amount of submissions per members over the same time. Moderators are getting frustrated (including myself) and redbubblers easily forget what’s the maximum for whatever groups and within what timescale (including myself too) :)
I do like tiny boxes obviously :))
Anne
Mary Campbell
Thanks for the update.
Pal Gyomai
Great stuff, thanks for all the hard work you do!
C J Lewis
Thanks RB team…you people are doing a terrific job :)
Leslie Wood
Thanks for all you do for us!!! Love the new features :)
APhillips
Thanks for the updates! The footer is a fine idea as well. One question though: would it help to make it a touch more pronounced? If I hadn’t been looking, I don’t know that I would have seen it – and then all your hard work would have been for naught!
peter
It’s a secret feature for those in the know! People who aren’t logged in don’t see it.
cheetaah
You’re doing a great work, can you update the mail too, lets say sometimes I read the mails and don’t respond and some I respond, but then when I go back I do not know what and to who I respond. Is there a way to make a box or sign that I responded to certain mails? Thank you again for your great ideas.
CanvasMan
Thanks for the updated info.
1stAngel
CompuServe used to distribute a graphics display program called CompuShow. In the documentation for version 8.33 in the FAQ section, it states:
The GIF (Graphics Interchange Format), pronounced “JIF”, was designed by CompuServe and the official specification released in June of 1987.
Well that’s stuffing quite a few of the new webcasts that are now on showing us how to do things LOL Even Adobe, in one of theirs, pronounced it as Gif (hard G) Nice to know even the biggies don’t always get it right :)
eltotton
Thanks, Guys, for all of your hard work to make the site even more efficient. You rock.
Susie Mac
Thank you RB staff for all the hard work and time y ou put in to make this wonderful site better than ever!! Just updated my profile re the downloading of images protection… thank you so much susie :)

Re “the pre-loading images experiment” — it assumes the person looking at the page will want to see the next page.
If you’re on a restricted bandwidth, or restricted download allowance, or if you’re just trying to download something else in the background while you look at a RedBubble page, it’d be a pain in the you-know-what to have the RB page decide what you use your bandwidth on.
While RB certainly has the best of intentions, IMHO making the user download something they haven’t asked for goes counter to the principles of good web design.
Justin French
JasonTowers, the numbers most definitely say that 99% of people do exactly this — next, next, next, next, next! I understand your concerns, which is why this is an experiment.
Justin French
Hey, just a quick note — we’ve missed a clear GIF on one of the zooms, we’ll fix it ASAP.
Paul McClintock
GIF is pronounced however I say it is… It’s not a word anyway. So really you should all be pronouncing it Jee Eye Eff.
Bleh.
F. Magdalene A...
visiting other bubblers,
One of the things I do is look at the favorites of the person I’m visiting. I end up seeing a wide variety of work that way. Also, I click on the name of the comment left above one I’ve just left to go see their gallery. That too gets me around RB wider than just looking at those who comment on my site or those on my watchlist.
I’ve learned a lot from bubblers by visiting their galleries. I’ve been inspired to try new things, use different mediums and paint outside the canvas so to speak. Visiting other galleries can help the artist in their own creative expression.

Well done RB! Thank you. :-)

Good work guys :D

um does the giffy work? Maybe it’s me, but I activated it in my profile and whether logged in or out, I’m able to right-clk on my image. Just wondering if it’s me

seems to have settled after a few glitches good work ladies and gentlemen
Wendy Slee
Jiff/Gif who cares, just want to say a huge thank you for this added security measure…... it may be only a small deterrent, but I still believe every little bit helps….. Thanks guys, I appreciate you!
JasonSmithPhotogs
That clear GIF option is sweet!
bonniemonahan1
I am very pleased to read that we can add clear gifs over our large photos. This is a very plus!!!!!!!!
Take care, Bonnie
