A portrait of Bruce Jones who played Les in Coronation Street. He was the first guest for the Celebrity Portrait competition at our Art In The Gardens event in Sheffield Botanical Gardens – a really lovely event. I was delighted when this came runner-up to a fabulous oil painting of Bruce by Kidane Mariam, one of my favourite portrait artists. Bruce also asked if he could buy my portrait, which delighted me even more. So this has always been one of my favourites for that reason. Also I have happy memories of starting this on the ferry home from Shetland, knowing I had not long to produce a piece of artwork and the only pencil I could find in my handbag was a little stub of a raw umber coloured pencil – and the whole thing was created with that. I originally intended just to complete this in full colour but liked the monochrome version so much I left it and it started me on a whole series of pictures done in the same way.

I’m an artist who loves animals as you’ll no doubt see from my subject matter but also, living in Shetland, am inspired by my beautiful, wild land and seascapes. I take commissions for portraits from photographs, run an art club, and also enjoy doing illustrations for children’s books.
