Conscience
When you hear the neighbours fighting, do you intervene, even if you think something bad may be happening or do you stay out of it, because tomorrow they could make it up again and you will be blamed for interfering ?
When do we step in ? In the end did I call or was someone else’s social conscience get there before my conscience ?!!

Go back to sleep, you fool.
They will be fine in the morning,
when their tempers cool.
But this sounds worse than usual.
Listen to the baby cry!
It has just been woken by the noise,
and will stop by and by.
I must see what is happening.
Listen! Breaking glass!
Someone might be getting hurt,
how can I let this pass?
You should not interfere.
You know they will be alright.
Why do you think that this,
Is worse than the other night?
There! Go back to sleep.
You knew that it would cease.
Try and get some sleep
while you’ve got some peace.
Listen, it’s a siren!
Go and have look.
Who went in the ambulance?
Who have the policemen took?
Quick he’s seen me looking!
The policeman at the gate
“Thank god you called us when you did,
Or it would have been too late!”

Wonderful, I re read it several times it hooked me in and I raced along with the manic feel.
RebeccaWeston replied
It is a bit manic, isn’t it? It’s a terrible thing when you fight your conscience and don’t know what to do for the best – should you interfere or ignore. I wrote it so that you can decide whether I am talking to myself or someone in the room. And did I call the police or was it someone else? XX

I read it as a wrestle with your subconcious…..the little voice telling you to get over it
RebeccaWeston replied
Yep ! thats is more how I would have read it !! XX

GREAT, so scary. I would hope that I would definitely call the police.
RebeccaWeston replied
Thanks again Kelly. It is very difficult thing though, if you called the police and they made it up tomorrow, you would be the bad guy. So many people stay out of it for that reason – they would rather not be called nosey neighbour !! It’s a dangerous decision to make if you make the wrong choice.

powerful writing – reminds me of when my sister lived beside a guy who used to beat his girlfriend, the walls were paper-thin, she had some scary nights – funny thing though, one night, on my way to a fancy dress i stopped by my sisters apartment, i was dressed as Osama Bin Laden and had some toy guns on the dash-board of my car, the ‘girlfriend beater’ thought it was someone after him and did a runner! hasn’t been seen since. Great writing Becca, congrats on the feature x
RebeccaWeston replied
hehe – I would have loved to have seen that !! :o) Thanks Tracy XX

This does traumatize me. the reader, as I was drawn into the turmoil of deciding what to do. It is easy to say, “Err on the side of caution,” but when the same ole scenario plays out over and over, what to do isn’t so clear. I wish it had occurred to me to call the cops on my folks those 1000’s of times they played uproar all those day-night-day-night marathons that terrorized us kids, but cops didn’t do much about domestic violence in those days. And I hate to think what would have happened if I had been found out fro making such a call. Hell, I didn’t even talk about it to anyone. Just knew to bear it.
RebeccaWeston replied
You are right, most of the time the police do nothing, if they even come out. But is is still a difficult call – whether to have a social conscience or listen to your own conscience? Either way you could be getting it so wrong.
We all know that today, it doesn’t always pay to get involved, when people have been killed, themselves, for trying to help out.
This will always be a horrible situation for anyone to find themselves in.
Thank you for reading XX
