Wittgenstein’s Trail

Við spilum endalaust (‘we played endlessly’)

In September of 1912 Ludwig Wittgenstein visited Iceland with his friend David Pinsent. Pinsent kept a detailed diary of their travels that gives a great insight into the life of Icelanders in the beginning of the 20th century, but also portrays Wittgenstein’s genius along with his famous eccentricity. It seems that many of the ideas that later were published in Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosphicus were in fact conceived during this 12 day ride around the south western part of Iceland. Wittgenstein dedicated the Tractatus, the only book published in his lifetime, to Pinsent.
On September 14th, 2012, exactly one hundred years later we followed their trail. We even met the grandchildren and grand grandchildren of the some of the people that hosted Wittgenstein and Pinsent a century ago.
