The RedBubble Real Photography Comp

Houston - We have a black and white problem...

Folks – it seems the winner of the black and white category is not the owner of the winning image. Thank you to whoever has helped alert the real owner and ourselves to this. As the poms say, “that’s not cricket old chap”

Please be assured our image pirate will not be winning that glorious Leica.

James.

Wow what a development. Thank you guys for dealing with it ….. and severely I hope. Copyright protection is a paramount concern for artists.

Well if theres a empty winners spot how about you take another look at mine!

I swear its all my own work and I’d just love that little lecia like it was my child. :)

  • Jonathan Russell

    :o
Wow! Full on, man. Big thumbs up to whoever nabbed the perpetrator – maybe they deserve the prize!

  • Tempest

    Tempest

How very, very sad. I’m so sorry to hear this has happened. Some people are just mean and stupid.

Congrats to you James for being so restrained in your post – I’d be stomping heads by now!

This stolen photograph drives me nuts this morning ;)) I’am happy that you delete it so quickly. Now the challenge is open again ;)))

  • RonniLeigh

I have a sick feeling in my stomach although this sort of thing happens all of the time. It’s not shocking but it makes me so pissed off. I’m sure this person will have to answer for his actions. And Laurence you are the one that deserves an award for letting Red Bubble know.

  • Mark German

    Absolutely disgraceful.
    Deserves to be publicly humiliated.

  • Benjamin Scheurer

I’ve seen other pictures from that member and I’m shocked to
read about that he stole it….I would have never expected anything like it.
It’s strange but I had the feeling that I’ve seen that image before….sometimes
    the instinct works…

  • RonniLeigh

    RonniLeigh

I really feel the 2nd runner up should get the prize but then I am not the one that gets to decide. lol

  • Jonathan Russell

    Jonathan Russell

How’d you pick it, Lauren? Is it a shot that you were already familiar with? Would you happen to have a link to the real creator – it really is a stunning shot. Either way, congrats on a sharp eye – Glad you caught it.
On another note, I wouldn’t be suprised if the two other shots submitted to the contest by the same user were also knock-offs.

  • RonniLeigh

    RonniLeigh

I am the 1st runner up lol

  • RonniLeigh

    RonniLeigh

i mean the 1 st runner up should get the prize. omg I didn’t mean I am the 1st runner up. I better shut up

  • laurencegarcon

    laurencegarcon

Thanks Ronni ;)... There are millions of photographs published on magazines or on the web, but some are like “real stars” that you cannot forget once you have seen them. We all have to keep our eyes open to fight against those robberies… After all, what happened, is a good lesson for all of us ;) Smile an go on !

The user that uploaded the image (and others) has been removed. We are just resolving the situation of the winner. Will let you guys know once it’s sorted.

  • Durotriges

As the Leica is still up for grabs then, I’ll happily take it off your hands…. ;-D

  • kseriphyn

LOL XD Triges I bags!. Looks like we have a golden ticket fraudster. LOL! Hillarious. Lucky that one was spotted before the Leica was given away.

  • thelightseeker

The black and white competition was a disaster, very unlucky. They also committed the mistake to reward photos not for sale against the rules, see this thread in the forum.
Well, it can happen, and I guess it was a mistake due to RedBubble’s youth :)))

  • Melinda Kerr

    Melinda Kerr

It’s funny when I checked out his folio I thought it was weird he only had 3 photos in it. I thought if he was that good he’d have more. Apparently he said I should look after the Leica until yo find someone else to.

You’re not going to fall for that are you?

  • Rhana Griffin

    Rhana GriffinRedbubbley Schweppervescence

I really really REALLY need a camera!!! (The canon would do me just fine ;)

I’d be happy to submit Circle of Friends for consideration (insert cheeky grin here)

  • Melinda Kerr

    Melinda Kerr

I’ve seen other shots that are suss. There’s one I am convinced I have seen before and after looking at the artists profile I find it even more suspicious they have so few shots. I won’t say who because it’s unfair as I cannot prove the allegation. What do I do in a situation like this? I guess I can’t do anything?

  • thelightseeker

    thelightseeker

Not only in the black and white section, but also other rewarded photos were not for sale.
    A History of Sex: Jocasta
It’s annoying, RedBubble is great but they made a mess!
Melinda, also others in the black and white section have a little gallery… like teton that by chance is another one that didn’t put his photo for sell. :S

  • thelightseeker

    thelightseeker

Also asissanyal: only 3 photos to take part in the challenge but not for sell…
    ANNOYED.

  • fred funkeldink

    fred funkeldink

oh—i am new to the site and i have only figured out how to sell images ….some cant be sold as they are from little commisions i did … my entry into the bw comp was the first image i uploaded to the site…. sure it can be for sale .. didnt think any one would buy a pic of an old man…. sorry to break the rules, .... i genuinly didnt know .. its always hard when your new to something ..

    take care y’all

  • Melinda Kerr

    Melinda Kerr

Ok I have a suggestion. I am not saying anyone has cheated (apart from the one you have caught). However a cynic might say people don’t put things up for sale when they don’t have a high res enough pic. Why not ask all those who have won something to supply a high res version of their photo. If they took it, it shouldn’t be a problem. I am not trying to stir up trouble. But I do think RB should institute the rules as they were set out. Just to be fair to those concerned.

  • fred funkeldink

my entry was high res .. it was the comp that drew me to this wicked site .. my problem at the moment is it asks for address in order to sell items… i am emigrating to adelaide in 6 months but while my wife and i wait for the visa to come thro (upto 6 months) we are going to travel asia … we leave next week and i wont have an address until we get to adelaide … not sure what to do …

  • Shanina Conway

    Shanina Conway

Oh that’s awful.and it’s sad this has happened..so who is the winner of this section.

  • Steven Lippis

    Steven Lippis

I thought the photo was familiar, tracked down the website of the owner and thought it was maybe a bit mean that such a high profile professional photographer would sign up just to win a camera he could buy with spare change, but also saw nothing to say it WASN’T him. At least he was found out before the Leica was sent off!

  • Stephen Colquitt

    Stephen Colquitt

Sad. Good that it was found out so quickly

  • Craig Goldsmith

    Name and Shame.

  • Carolyn Conroy

    Carolyn Conroy

If you go to Flickr.com and put “Just do it” into the search box, 6 other people come up with the same fake competition winner photo in their portfolios… And these copies are in colour not b&w! Just thought I’d share that – I had a spare fifteen minutes and was curious to see if anyone else was claiming that image as their own(!)

  • Loredana Crupi

    Loredana Crupi

Damn it …Collingwood lost to Adelaide and I come home to find out we have a case of fraud at Redbubble !!

  • anthonytsteel

Iam so pleased you found out!! Thanks for dealing with it!

  • imageworld

    imageworld

well done guy’s, boy you were quick to sort that out! makes us all feel safe with our photo’s at your place, well done to all the REAL winners of the competiton, excellent work from you all

  • Deri Dority

    Deri Dority

I wonder if the original photo is watermarked thru Digimarc or one of the other companies? Maybe RB should check for invisible watermarks on the upload images to make sure the image hasn’t been pirated.

  • mick

    mick

in my veiw, this is clearly fraud, this son of a bitch should be banned altogether.

this site concrns me in that matter,if i had my work coppied and displayed not as my own,i could not be resposible for my actions, whay ever they be,
heres a tip…....how about red bubblers giving out his details so all of us, as a community, teach him a lesson or two, paste his name all over the site explaining what sort of devious person this is.BLACK BAN HIM 100% NEVER TO RE-ENTER.

  • Claire Armistead

    Claire Armistead

wow! This is all so shocking. I go excitedly to see who the winners were last night, thought all the work was amazing and then this. CONTROVERTIAL!
As someone who’s new to photography; this is all so shocking!
How dare people casually steal other people’s work and have the cheek to pass it off as their own.
I do hope, like many others have suggested, that this person is banned from the bubble.
I thought the photo was amazing and feel so let down but glad to see how well it’s been dealt with x

  • Erin Kroll

    Erin Kroll

That’s so sad. I’m so glad people were looking out! When things like this happen I get more worried about placing work in the public domain, but Red Bubble, you make me sleep soundly at night!

  • Andrew Bosman

    Andrew Bosman

So did kingshuk14 get kicked out of RB or did he/she just leave?
    I hate cheats.

    I’m getting my lynching stick…

  • mick8585

    mick8585

I feel sorry for the stupid clown. To have such low self esteem to want to do that clearly means they have a problem. But still get the lynching stick anyway.

  • BigRed

    BigRed

its hard to understand why any one could enter someone elses pic in a comp as like most here i feel that if you can’t win it fair and square then you haven’t really won.

i could sort of understand [ but definately don’t approve] using the site to sell images to make money but would have thought without the high res version all you could sell would be cards?

maybe next time RB could contact the winners and get them to supply the full res original as proof before the winners are announced.?

  • Melinda Kerr

    Melinda Kerr

I guess that’s why they must be for sale? Because only hi res versions are big enough to be available fot sale? Is that right?

  • DataShine

    DataShine

I guess that depends on how desperate some one is Melinda. They could spend a few hundred dollars, buy a nice large print, do a studio shot of it and enter a nice hi-res image.

Sadly vigilance is the only real solution. In the end we have to trust eachother to be honorable and ethical, and sometimes that will cause problems. RB did well to catch this.

  • Melinda Kerr

    Melinda Kerr

    Yep agreed.

  • David Stuart

    David Stuart

As sad as it is, I thought RB handled it smoothly and swiftly..well done team.

I just don’t understand why people do this. Surely a little piece of you dies carring around the lie. How hollow must the applause feel ?

    People are strange

  • kathleen

    kathleen

see, they should just have chosen a self-portrait (like mine was) and then there would be no problem… nothin gets past a photo id.
