Silk story

Silk story

I had to visit a village in Fuia, Nadia, West Bengal, India, where handloom weaving was being done as a part of our college field visit. Spinning and weaving were the main sources of income for the locals.
The types of fabric produced included cotton, lots of silk, less of wool and very rare synthetic. Every house had two or three weaving hand looms. Also they had fabric and thread available for sale. This picture shows one such shop with loads of silk thread. It reminds me of past “Silk Route” studied in history, in which India also was a leading business centre. Till now the traditional silk weaving continues in numerous parts of the country.

I’ve heard wonderful things, over many years, in regards to the beauty, variety, durability, and low cost of India silks and other cloths.

Unfortunately, so, apparently, has everyone else, as I have not been able to find one person where I could get what I need, that I couldn’t get it cheaper making it myself or buying it from Fabric By The Pound in Tucson.

However, this is a lovely image.

    Well done on home page!

Small aside about the cost of silk – meant in kindness: why should silk be cheap???? It takes intensive effort by people to extract the thread, spin it, colour it and weave it into cloth. It’s not something that just happens!! The fact that silk comes from the poorer countries of the world doesn’t mean that we should expect to get it for next to nothing … Just my thoughts… I’ve been fortunate enough to see silk being produced (in Turkey), and believe me, it’s not a job most of us would want to do!
Sorry, back to the topic!! Love your picture, well done :)

    You are absolutely right!!!
It doesnot come cheap keeping in mind the hardwork of people involved in WIP stages. But if you go to a village, the silk farmers sell the silk filament obtained to village head or to a wholesaler at a very negligible cheap rate. Silk weavers also dont get very high price. They do the job on hour basis payment and silk or cotton doesnot concern them. It is at the garment stage after the silk is woven, silk gains its popularity and price. It is even exported to foreign countries at a rate which limits the sky sometimes. There is no proper balance in the supply chain in terms of economy.
Now a days … Self Help Groups (SHG) are coming up who are involved in the entire process from extracting silk to selling a dress … they consist of local people and get a good price to share among themself. They also get subsidy and other helps from Govt. like marketing and promotion, etc. So the vertical integration of the chain is required to retain maximum profit.
I have uploaded another pic for you … Check it out.

    Thanks for your love!!!
