In 1865 the 120-acre Woogaroo Lunatic Asylum opened accommodating 69 patients in one two-storey building and four female wards.
By 1898, 1500 patients were housed in the facility and it is said that many terrible things happened within the facility’s walls including people being drugged and locked away indefinitely for illnesses such as post-partum depression, Parkinson’s Disease, and the like.
This building is now abandoned, fenced off and falling apart. It is a shame that this building has been left to ruin and graffitied, due to the historical significance of Queensland’s history.
