Soliloquy to the Mirror

The stars are fading from my eyes
with every empty day that passes.
Despair, the black dog that trails
every lover with no lover,
tracks me with relentless purpose.
Even if I had a stick with which
to beat him back I doubt
I’d have the strength to wield it.

I have forgotten how to lift my eyes
to the beauty I am told is out there.
My gaze is locked to barren ground.
Oh mother, wrap me in the shroud
that is rightfully yours
and put me in that ground.
I am one big ache
and I would like to lie down.
