Theft

You stole something of mine
and I want it back.
You nicked it when I wasn’t looking
and hid it in a trunk you never open.

I know you took it just because you could
and not because you think it precious.
It’s no way fair to keep it prisoned,
a butterfly pinned in a box,
fluttering feebly as the iridescence fades
from frail wings of promise.

You’re going to make me beg, aren’t you?
All right, I’m a fool
and no one knows it better than I.

I’m on my knees.
Give it back.
Give it back.
I have no strength for standing.
I want my heart back, please,
and I want it now.

Sometimes it feels that way. Can be the worst pain.

  • Indeed, thank you.
