Twenty-One Lines on Loss

Goddammit I miss you!
I know you think of me
just as I think of you.
I know why you disappeared,
and when you did,
you tore a hole in my life
that will take an eternity to patch.

I opened a fortune cookie not long ago.
Inside was a message unlike any other.
That small slip of paper spoke
with the voice of the universe.
It said:
“You must forgive that person today. Just believe me.”
And I’m trying – I’m trying.

Although hearts and souls take risks, there are those times
the price demanded is beyond one’s ability to pay.
Madness and despair prevent the fearful
from embracing destiny.
When that happens, two beings live knowing
the comfort promised stands in front of them,
unable to be claimed.
