like a tree uprooted i topple sideways,
crashing to the reality of unforgiving earth.
limbs cracked have nothing on the shattering of the soul
as one is ripped from the harsh but familiar comfort
of one’s grounding.
lying stunned as cold sunshine gives way to sullen rain
i look up and see that phantom, love,
dangling not so far above me but tantalizingly
out of reach.
i am worthy! i will win you! i cry as determination floods in,
filling cracks and fissures as, fixing myopic gaze
upon that teasing shade i rise,
battered but not beaten,
ready to replant my roots in this new ground.
