What You've Done

I saw a film – in fact I watched it twice –
about inevitability, the way things are meant to be.
This is what happened to us.
It’s why we met, connected not by choice
but by those laws we neither see nor control.
And then you vanished, and I think I know why.
Your chose to honor old habits, your purse,
the words said in another life, while dishonoring love.

But back to the film.
The woman tells the man,
“You ruined me, I didn’t want to settle for less.”
And my soul shivered as I put on her skin,
because that is what you’ve done to me –
ruined me for any other –
because, in the end,
some things are meant to be.
