Saying Goodbye

It’s spring, but raw and gray,
I lost two friends today,
untethered from that anchor of loneliness,
now floating free in that measureless universe
from which they emerged,
drifting,
seeking,
but no more.

One runs willingly to that bright beacon love.
One’s sucked back into the void he calls his life,
but needing to embrace what he has wrought
these many years since the enchantment faded.

My tears run silently,
hot paths of salt
that slide from underneath the canopy of darkness
I wear to hide the grief behind my eyes.

That sharp stiletto
– loneliness –
pricks at my soul.

I’m weary and I’m selfish in my sorrow,
yet happy for the one who’s bathed in light,
regretting for the other all his warmth and passion
now chained cold and stark while he rebuilds his dream.

They fall away, these friends, so easily
and yet given the chance I’d do the same –
embrace warm flesh and scorn this mute machine
whose tentacles enwrap the prisoned heart.
It’s spring, but raw and gray,
I lost two friends today.
