mapping the heart

the shadows some days seem as
impenetrable as brick
as harsh as steel wool
as dark as the pit
and then
for no explicable reason
the brilliant gold of sunlight casts them off
as if they never were

the mystery seems bound to the blood
and the moontides
and processes so inchoate
that no matter how they’re probed
and isolated
and charted
no whitecoated lab rat will ever
fully untangle the relation

poets call it despair
dreamers call it hope

you brash credentialed agitators
unveil your mystifying formulae and cry eureka!
but we who choose to feel
as well as think
laugh quietly
as
you scrawl your quotidian equations
on the chalkboard

knowing one good rain of tears will wash away
the proofs of your years of sterile questing
one good laugh will shatter that brittle board
knowing there is yet that spark
that you cannot measure or define
