If You Should Ever Give Me Flowers

If you should ever give me flowers,
no hothouse roses, please,
no stiff-stemmed bunches of man-made colors
arranged by someone else’s hand.
No, gather for me the wild things
found along the roadside, in the fields,
by the brook or on the hillside.
Spend your time, not your money.
Gather what you find according to the season
and I will treasure what you bring me, always.
