under the weather (or not)

i live in a climate that gets cold
frigid even sometimes
winter delivers arctic blasts
that freeze the air and the body too
snow piles in heaps
mounds of tasteless glacial cream
coating everything with treacherous icy glaze

i’ve reached the age where
in some circles it’s the done thing
to pack up housekeeping
and plant oneself somewhere
one never has to bundle up
shovel snow
vainly chop at ice that slicks paved surfaces

this is not for me
i have lived in tropical heat
caressed every day by breezes
that carry the scent of jasmine and desire
and make you want to rip off clothes
and do nothing but have steamy sex all day
(and all night too)

there’s something perniciously perverse
about living in a place that numbs your brain
melts all your good intentions
your ambition
and leaves you soft and ripe
a melon bursting
with the succulence of summer

after all these years of yankee living
(having fled that place that would have left me
nothing but a mindless maw of throbbing flesh)
i am too much the puritan for that
still there are flannelled winter nights
i dream of sun and jasmine and awaken
with a sly succulent smile

Love it – think I would rather be a mindless maw! I hate winter

  • LOL! I got really sick and tired of sun every day in the Keys.

this makes me laugh! Oh yes the memories can really get you! But I find I rather like the variety of the cycle here. Ice not so much! Never mind – those memories can warm up everything. cheers!!

  • Always glad to amuse…LOL…it’s a good thing I was young and ruthlessly determine when I was living in the Keys, because tropical weather otherwise wrings me out. Thanks much.

Beautiful images you conjure RC, ‘tropical heat, frigid cold, arctic blasts’, I have memories of each & your words took me directly there…magical….

  • Many thanks for reading, Vanessa, I’m glad the piece spoke to you.

I love that “mindless maw”, lol, and that you’re such a poet you can write a great write on the weather… and make it sensual too :)) I’m just happy I’ve experienced the variety of living in both extremes, and at this older age glad to live in the in-between climate now, although I miss the marked seasons which are always a good reminder of the cycle of life and that change is constant… and a gentle preparation for death. Didn’t like the times I lived in places that were both cold and damp, without adequate heating though. Places with deep snow and blizzards at Xmas were special, but warm summers without extreme heat suit me now.

  • I guess this made several people laugh, which pleasantly surprises me, as it didn’t occur to me that it would…LOL. Our winters here last two years have been brutal, I am losing my taste for them but when I lived in the Keys I got sick and tired of sunshine every day. I need the change of season to feel halfway normal.
