hymn to the mater dolorosa

all hail the queen of heaven
born a goddess
then made human
sanctified by men
condemned to birth a savior
i taste your tears
as you embrace his body

i too have lost a son
and though no goddess
surely not a saint
it does not matter
we are sisters nonetheless
i wear your dolent face

although my child
was not a savior to the world
he was mine
and on his leaving
lost my blood
and that most precious gift he gave me
motherhood
